Mirrium-Webster’s dictionary defines a heartbreaker as one who causes grief or anguish. For example: The Super Bowl was a heartbreaker for the San Fransisco fans. (The loss of the game literally broke their hearts.)
The dicitonary also shared that the first use of heartbreaker was in 1863. I was stunned by that information. Who were heartbreakers back then? Were they the local men of money who were interested in marrying one type of woman but still loved many women?
Each of us has a heartbreaker story. We had a person that we loved who hurt us in some way. “The one who got away” is the premise for Thom Johnson in my book Forever Love. When I was in junior high school, I’d fallen hard for my best friend. We had grown up together. Our families were friends. We dated for a short time but his family moved during high school and we lost touch. In 1991, we got back in touch again. Time seemed to have slipped away. Talking on the phone daily we spoke about our lives—the time apart and the past we’d lived through. I’ll never forget his words one day…he said, “I used to have the perfect girl for me but I lost her.” It got me thinking about what my life would’ve been like had we stayed together or kept in touch better. Funny thing…even though he was the one guy who really broke my heart, I realized as an adult that he wasn’t the right guy for me. Eventually, he got messed up in drugs and went to jail. I’d lost touch with him again. Honestly I love the memory of our time together better than the actual person he probably is today.
