What’s a heartbreaker?
Mirrium-Webster’s dictionary defines a heartbreaker as one who causes grief or anguish. For example: The Super Bowl was a heartbreaker for the San Fransisco fans. (The loss of the game literally broke their hearts.)
The dicitonary also shared that the first use of heartbreaker was in 1863. I was stunned by that information. Who were heartbreakers back then? Were they the local men of money who were interested in marrying one type of woman but still loved many women?
Each of us has a heartbreaker story. We had a person that we loved who hurt us in some way. “The one who got away” is the premise for Thom Johnson in my book Forever Love. When I was in junior high school, I’d fallen hard for my best friend. We had grown up together. Our families were friends. We dated for a short time but his family moved during high school and we lost touch. In 1991, we got back in touch again. Time seemed to have slipped away. Talking on the phone daily we spoke about our lives—the time apart and the past we’d lived through. I’ll never forget his words one day…he said, “I used to have the perfect girl for me but I lost her.” It got me thinking about what my life would’ve been like had we stayed together or kept in touch better. Funny thing…even though he was the one guy who really broke my heart, I realized as an adult that he wasn’t the right guy for me. Eventually, he got messed up in drugs and went to jail. I’d lost touch with him again. Honestly I love the memory of our time together better than the actual person he probably is today.

In Forever Love, you can meet Syndie Wilder's heartbreaker and find out if she can give him a second chance.
Fifteen years ago, Syndie Wilder left her small hometown- Amherst, Ohio- to escape the pain of losing her best friend and boyfriend. Deciding that Chicago offered more for an up and coming jewelry designer, she enjoyed the big city life until she chooses to return and care for her father. Taking care of her father and relocating her internet business, Syndie has no time or desire for romance but fate has a way of playing with best-laid plans.
Thom Johnson broke Syndie’s heart all those years ago and regrets it every day. As a firefighter, Thom sets out to protect Amherst and redeem himself for his bad choices. However, he never has forgotten Syndie and the hurt he caused her.
When a chance meeting happens, can the two former friends allow themselves the chance to become friends again, or will the sparks turn a childhood friendship into a forever love?

Heartbreakers are the ones that got away...for what they thought was someone better...in most cases, they weren't. Oh we'll...their loss.
2/8/2013 05:07:14 am
It is hard sometimes to let them go, even when we know we are better off!

haven't we all had the "one who got away" heart breaks. I know I had my share. I think the boy I dated right after high school would be the worst. Thanks mawmom at gmail dot com

Those are the sweetest heartbreaks. I remember my daughter's first crush. She was in 1st grade. He moved away and broke her heart.
2/8/2013 07:30:04 am
My biggest heartbreaker was a college boyfriend. Luckily my best friend at the time was there to pick up the pieces. We've been together ever since (married for 20 years).
2/8/2013 12:31:56 pm
What a great story! I'm so glad you've found your one true love!
2/8/2013 11:36:59 am
My favorite heartbreaker is Smitty from the book "The Beast In Him" by Shelly Laurenston.(one of the Pack/Pride series books) He was just drop dead gorgeous and sexy and he broke Jessie Ann's heart when he wouldn't claim her with "the Smith Mate Maul" If you want to know what the heck I'm talking about.......READ THE BOOK. :) In fact I recommend you read the series.

We all want to love a Heartbreaker. Maybe its because of his chiseled good looks, his bad boy attitude, or the mysterious nature of him. Some Heartbreakers are just that, they know what they got and how to use it to get what they want. Then there are those Heartbreakers that don’t even realize that they are doing it. The best part about a Heartbreaker is that there is always a woman that turns their world upside down until they realize it is love. I have read many Romance Novels over the years and have run into many memorable Heartbreakers and my favorites are usually the ones that don’t even know they are Heartbreakers! Some of my personal favorite Heartbreakers are :

My big heartbreak happened in high school. I was pretty upset for a few weeks, but then I started a new job that kept me busy.
2/9/2013 12:10:27 pm
Keeping busy is a big saving grace when you have a heartbreak!
2/8/2013 03:45:25 pm
For me the heartbreaker is a bad boy who goes kicking and screaming into love! When he falls he falls hard!
2/9/2013 12:08:30 pm
Oh those bad boys! :)

I love my puppies! They can break your heart. You're right!
2/9/2013 04:26:56 am
It's never been anything too egregious (since it was usually realizing guys I liked didn't like me back), but still difficult...

2/9/2013 11:29:18 am
Mine was a few years back. I was engaged and living with the man I thought I was going to marry but I kept having doubts , I wondered if I was too young and what not. He ended up giving me an ultimatium him or my best friend and well I chose my friend and we broke up. I suffered for years with that decision . Did I choose wrong ? and a bunch of what if's . It took me years to get over it. I still wonder to this day what if..
2/9/2013 12:12:32 pm
I'm sorry that he made you choose. Just imagine what the next choice would be.
2/9/2013 06:16:11 pm
My first real heartbreak was my first true love. I was 14, he was 17. He turned out to be gay. I was completely crushed. But I survived and we're good friends now!
2/10/2013 11:42:05 am
My first love was my first heartbreak too!
2/9/2013 06:47:17 pm
What a great story. I love stories of love lost and then found again.
2/10/2013 11:42:46 am
Thanks Mary. Have you read any of my books?
2/9/2013 10:41:28 pm
Haven't met a hear breaker ..only in fiction ,love Eric from True Blood :)
2/10/2013 11:43:32 am
Eric would definitely be one to break your heart. Did you see Bill being a heartbreaker?
2/10/2013 12:04:36 am
Someone broke my heart when I was younger and I cried for days :) I still remember it, but it doesn't hurt anymore.
2/10/2013 11:44:19 am
Crying is one of the best ways to get over them!
2/10/2013 06:32:28 am
My favorite part of having a heart breaker is the world class groveling. Todd in Lauren Dane's Laid Bare is my perfect example.
2/10/2013 11:45:08 am
The groveling when they realize what they lost is so much fun!
2/10/2013 07:59:44 am
I had a huge heartbreak when I was 20. Apparently shy sensitive guys can be heartbreakers too.
2/10/2013 11:45:45 am
Shy guys can be real heartbreakers. :)
2/10/2013 09:24:26 am

My ex...Cheated on me with a girl who was on the cheerleading squad with me... Talk about shitty... I got over him fast though because Hubby swooped in and captured my 16 year old heart and we have been together going on 14 years and going on 10 years married with two boys, two dogs and a turtle.
2/11/2013 01:58:57 am
Jeanette- don't you love those charming types who know when he should be your knight?

In grade 3, whole class found out I liked this boy. A week later he came up and told me straight up that he didn't like me. My little heart was broken : (
2/11/2013 02:01:45 am
I'm sorry Veronica. But at least he was honest and didn't play you along!
2/10/2013 04:29:04 pm
I may not have much experience in the whole love department, but I have had my heart broken. Being considered a Heartbreaker can come from various actions that you do. I am a newbie when it comes to reading romance books but what I have learned is that it is not bad to have a chiseled body or an amazing personality. If you look at it over all, if you never put your heart out there, you may never have a chance at true love and happiness. I may get broken once in a while but only you are strong enough to pick yourself up and try all over again. One of my favorite Heartbreakers is Taylor Qualls the Earl of Sandlin from the book His Impetuous Debutante. Lady Phoebe kinda reminds me of myself, accident prone and finding trouble in every corner. Taylor doesn’t think he is good enough for Phoebe, so he’s a heartbreaker and doesn’t know it.
2/11/2013 02:05:34 am
I'm sure that I've been a heartbreaker at some point. It is bound to happen when we just don't feel that way toward someone. I always try to remember to be nice about it.
Surprizing to learnt the term was only invented in the 60's!
2/11/2013 02:03:53 am
We do love the bad boy! Of course we also hope we are the one to redeem him!
2/10/2013 07:43:36 pm
I had some at high school, as probably most of us... Nothing serious, though :)
2/11/2013 02:02:51 am
High school seems to be the place for heartbreak!
2/11/2013 05:11:53 am
I had one heartbreaker when I was young but you learn to go on and grow from it.
2/11/2013 05:56:18 am
I had a heartbreaker in my 20's and yes, I moved on. But found it hard to trust after him. What he did was that bad.
2/11/2013 06:19:36 am
Luckily I didn't have my heart broken yet.
2/11/2013 06:27:42 am
Was so in love with the man I was with before my husband. It just wasn't right and he broke my heart repeatedly. Thank goodness I met my hubby. He's so opposite of that.
2/11/2013 01:53:18 pm
I still think about the my boyfriend from 7th & 8th grade. Always wonder if his family didn't move away if we would have continued our relationship. I seemed to be the only girl he stayed with the longest. Thanks for the giveaway!
2/11/2013 05:28:08 pm
My husband called off our wedding three months before the big day. A chance meeting a year later brought things into perspective for him and he has spent all his time ever since trying to make up for breaking my heart. I haven't told him that he has pid his dues and then some especially when we said I Do. Thanks for the fun stop. sbereza22(at)gmail(dot)com
