Look at his face. This man screams danger, yet I can't help looking at him. Naima shares her thoughts on HOOKS with you... Read along and don't forget...Entangled Publishing has some of the most fabulous authors and their new Ignite imprint sounds amazing. Who doesn't like a little danger with their passion! Make sure you enter the giveaway below. Reel Me In! Earlier this year I went fishing. While sitting on that boat in the middle of a placid, dark lake, dew falling cold and fresh, dawn breaking over the horizon and setting the still water aglow, my line went from slack to taut. In an instant, I grabbed the pole and reeled that beauty of a fish in! And what a catch… Okay, so I’m lying… Look, I don’t do nature. It’s hell on a perm and the closest I’ve come to fishing is a deep fried fillet between two slices of bread in a cardboard container. But it sounded good, didn’t it? Besides, I had to use creative license to create a picture. Back to my placid lake with the fishing line…a blurb on the back of a book is like that length of twine. A reader picks up a book off the shelf or scrolls through a website and comes across a paragraph or two that not only capture the essence of the book but entices the reader to pick it up or hit “Add to Shopping Cart”. The enticement is the “hook” or the elements of the story that stir and excite. Or in the vernacular, pushes the “Gotta Have It” button! Hooks are as varied as a reader’s—or writer’s –preference. Whether it’s the best-friend-turned-lover or long-lost-lovers-reunite…or sexy-as-sin-attorney-is-drawn-to-mysterious-woman-with-a-dark-past-that-has-come-calling…or something like that…just throwing that out there. There are certain elements to a plot, story or character that are guaranteed sales for me. Guar-o-nteed hooks I am a complete sucker for! Are you paying attention out there, authors? Pimp these storylines and I’m your faithful reader! Ahem…take note because these may seem familiar as they are in a couple of my books, Secrets and Sins: Malachim and Secrets and Sins: Gabriel, that are now out with Entangled Publishing’s Ignite line…again, just throwing that out there. I entitle this my “Gotta Bite” List…wait for it…wait for it… Gotta Bite #1: Best friend turned lover. Love it! Two people who know each other’s strength and faults. Have shared in the other’s triumphs and commiserated—and maybe even tied one on—over their failures. They are closer than most married couples because they actually communicate and aren’t afraid to be vulnerable. Now, after all this time, they’re seeing each other through newly opened eyes as if for the first time. *sigh* So romantic. And hot! Whew boy! Nothing like finding out your best friend is a hawtie freak! *cough* Secrets and Sins: Gabriel *cough* Sorry. Frog in my throat. Gotta Bite #2: Lovers reuniting after a long separation. Disclaimer: the cause of the original separation must be conflicted and plausible! Not some silly misunderstanding that any dunderhead could solve with a simple conversation! It must be bitter, hurtful and emotional. Because let’s face it, if the split is amicable where’s the hot make-up sex? Where’s the turmoil and angst while they find their way back to one another? Where’s the triumph over the past? Where’s the hot make-up sex?? Whoops. Mentioned that, didn’t I… Gotta Bite #3: Alpha male seduced by a woman he never saw coming! This element is almost a must-have for me to even pick up the book! I luuuuvs me some Alpha males! Dominant. Sexual. Hard. Protective. Bonus points if he’s tortured in some way. Be still my beating heart…and other body parts…I love a man who’s heart is stained dark except for that small flicker of light and it takes a woman—even better if she has some issues, too—who can fan that flicker into a flame and then a beacon. He would go through hell for her—and probably will by the end of the book—for her. She’s his only weakness. To everyone else he’s still a bad ass! Let me just pony up the money if this the male character ‘cause I want him! *cough* Secrets and Sins: Malachim *cough* I’m so sorry! There goes that dang frog again! Gotta Bite #4: The Beauty and the Beast theme. Yeah, so what? I’m a romantic at heart. I’m talking fairy-tale-happily-ever-after-birds-serenading-me-in-the-morning-mice-sewing-me-a-ball-gown romantic! And the Beauty and the Beast hook never fails. I love to read about a man who is scarred physically or emotionally, embittered by the circumstances that robbed him of the perfect, enchanted life he knew. Then a woman, who he most likely would have never looked at in his former life, comes along who heals him with unconditional love and acceptance. Instead of plain ‘ol garden variety hot sex they have tender, passionate garden variety hot sex. Isn’t romance grand? The one that trumps them all? Love. The hero and heroine have to love beyond themselves, willing to sacrifice everything for that person who completes them. Now there’s a hook! Now, since I threw that abstract hook out there about attorneys, mysterious women, and dark pasts, I might as well introduce my new book, Secrets and Sins: Malachim with Entangled Publishing’s Ignite line as it’s pretty similar…just a teensy bit…hee-hee! Malachim Jerrod is a man hardened by betrayal, secrets, and lies. When he bumps—literally—into mysterious Danielle Warren outside his office, he can practically smell the lies wrapped around the woman seeking a paralegal position in his law firm. But he’s desperate so he hires her. And soon her loveliness and haunting eyes sneak beneath his guard, and he finds himself falling for her. But her secrets and lies soon catch up with her, stalking her every move. Now he must trust with his heart and convince her to do the same. Because some secrets can kill… So, do you have a favorite trope? Share with me! Spill! A huge thank you to Melissa Keir for letting me ramble with her today! Hi, Melissa! *pinkie wave* And readers, don’t forget, September 23rd through October 4th, you can enter the Secrets and Sins: Malachim giveaway to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card, a World Traveler Boston cuff bracelet, and the 4 Ignite September releases! Just enter through the Rafflecopter below! Happy Reading!! ![]() When Danielle Warren shows up on Boston attorney Malachim Jerrod’s doorstep looking for a job, his first thought is trouble. Well, actually his first thought is how does a woman with the face of a saint have the voice of a sex phone operator? But sexy trouble or not, he’s desperate for a paralegal to help keep his struggling law office afloat. Can the boss keep his distance from the silk of his employee’s skin, the siren lure of her body…or ignore the haunting vulnerability in her eyes. Danielle can’t remember her own name, because it belongs to someone else. The new identity has afforded a fresh start and a new job. She’s taking control, making her own decisions, and refuses to allow anything to distract her—even her unwanted desire for her boss. Because distraction is dangerous and letting her guard down is not an option. Especially with a shadowy figure stalking her every move. Danger is on the hunt, threatening the boss she’s falling in love with. Should she fight for the future of her dreams or flee to save Malachim’s life? Danielle must make a decision. Because her lies are unraveling. And some secrets can kill… Excerpt: Silence reigned in the cab. Malachim wedged his body into the corner of the backseat, sprawling his legs as far as the cramped space would allow. In the close quarters, he studied her exotic profile. The high brow; thin, aristocratic nose just a shade too long by conventional beauty standards; the wide mouth with its full bottom lip; and the small, stubborn chin. His gaze dropped to the elegant, tightly clenched hands on her lap. Even in the shadows, he noted the paler skin stretched over her knuckles. Did she fear him? God, the thought caused the alcohol in his gut to roil and pitch. “Danielle.” He’d deliberately softened his voice, yet she flinched as if he’d roared her name. “Yes,” she said, keeping her head averted, continuing to stare out the side window. “Look at me.” He paused. “Please.” Her shoulders stiffened, and her fingers were clenched so hard, he feared they wouldn’t easily straighten. After several seconds, when her head turned in his direction, his lungs relaxed. God, he longed to touch her. Yes, he would be a eunuch and a flaming liar if he denied he wanted her beneath him, straining against his body as he thrust deep into soft, hot flesh he knew would squeeze his cock in the sweetest, tightest embrace. He craved it. Woke up in cold sweats from dreaming about it. But this… This need swelling within his chest now was gentler but no less hungry. No less desperate. He yearned to rub his thumb over the hard line her mouth had become, coaxing the sensual fullness to appear once again. More than the next critical beat of his heart, he desired to brush his lips over her brow, ease the panic and pain in her eyes, and replace them with pleasure. With wonder. With joy. What would Danielle look like carefree, laughing…unburdened? Jesus, he wanted to know. He straightened from his slouch, at the same time shifting closer to her. Carefully, unhurriedly, determined not to spook her. Not to threaten her. In the darkness, her eyes widened, and her breath quickened. At any other time, he would’ve backed off. But not tonight. As much as he needed to have her sun-kissed skin under his fingers, she needed to understand—believe—he would take a blade to his own hand before harming her. Gently, he cupped the nape of her neck. Pressed a thumb into the side of her throat and circled. She went rigid beneath his hand and loosed a tiny whimper. “Shh,” he crooned. “No, look at me,” he tenderly ordered when her lashes fluttered. He had to see her eyes, had to be able to detect if his caress became too much for her to bear. Even more, he had to see the moment the fear bled from her beautiful dark gaze and trust entered. “Thank you,” he murmured, staring into the brown depths. Yes, panic still lingered, but so did another emotion…an emotion that set his heart racing for his throat. “I would never hurt you,” he said. “Not that way. I may be an asshole sometimes and kick the hell out of your feelings, but I’ll never hurt you in the way that makes you shake under my hand.” He slid his hand into her hair, loosening the bun and cradling her head. And had to bite back his groan at the sensuous glide of her heavy hair over his hand and wrist. “You’re safe with me. I promise,” he said hoarsely. Buy links:

Giveaway- Enter below! Ooohhh What a sexy cover! Do you love a good spy story? How about passion and secrets? Sweet Treason will keep you wondering and fanning yourself! Gail has dropped by to share her thoughts on TV hotties. Don't forget to enter the contest below. Gail Ranstrom is giving away three prizes! MY FAVORITE SEXY TV MOMENTS by Gail Ranstrom Now, your idea of sexy and my idea of sexy just might be different. Sometimes it’s not about the in-your-face explicitness, but in the steady build and subtle nuances. Sometimes in no more than a glance. Okay. Who am I kidding? Sometimes it’s also about the sex. I’d love to tease (because that’s the kind of girl I am), but let’s just get to it, shall we? Castle – Season 4 closer, ‘Always’ (Episode 23 of Season 4 if you missed it). What can I say? I rewound at least five times. ::sigh:: From the moment we see Beckett sitting on a swing in the rain as she realizes what’s really important to her, and Castle taking down his murder board and throwing the pictures and papers away, we’re afraid it’s all over. Then Beckett arrives at Castle’s door, and he says he can’t ‘do this’ anymore, there’s a split second when we realize it actually is too late. But Beckett persists (bless her) and they kiss. And what a kiss! Ferocious and tender at the same time. Then the poignant moments of discovery and acknowledgement when you see his hunger, when he touches her chest where the bullet hit her, when he takes her hand... Sexiest scene I’ve ever seen without undressing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rivGBbC6Dk Vampire Diaries – Elena and Damon’s first kiss... ’nuff said. We waited for it for years, and it was worth the wait! But that scene in the motel... well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXbXNCKEYak Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Buffy and Spike’s first love scene. Not tender, not sweet, and not even nice, but talk about bringing down the house! Actually, this is the best argument for there being a thin line between love and hate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27ziWd-fDLs NCIS – The Season 7 opener, TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES. No kissing, no sex, not even a touch, but so many angsty moments that it became palpable and for some reason, I found it intensely romantic. As background, the last time Tony and Zeva saw each other, they fought and Zeva refused to ever work with Tony again. She disappeared and they thought she was dead and decided to go after the terrorist responsible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqs97tSS6GQ What do you think? Do you like the more explicit scenes? Or are you a fan of subtlety and subtext? I love them both. So now share your favorite romantic/sexy moments from your favorite programs! I’m waiting.... ![]() Passion and deadly secrets… On the run from British troops, American Revolutionary War spy Ryan Straughn forces Emily Nevins to hide him on her English farm. But Emily already keeps secrets that could mean her demise if discovered. Nevertheless as the long night wears on, attraction sizzles and they give in to unexpected passion, sure they’ll never see each other again… Deception and desire… A chance encounter in London society stirs heated memories of their sensual night together. They begin a heady dance of suspicion and desire. Though sympathetic to the struggling Colonists, Emily cannot trust a traitorous spy who may expose her dangerous intrigues. And Ryan risks his very life by trusting a woman privy to his true loyalties. But they are unable to deny their need for one another, even as Emily’s secrets are about to be exposed, and the noose around Ryan’s neck grows tighter. Betrayal and love… And now someone has discovered both their secrets. The price of silence? Betrayal. Of their causes, their love, their futures. In the end, lives will be lost and sacrifices made. Their choice is impossible. Which will they surrender—their lives…or their hearts? Excerpt: The stranger lowered his head further to leave a path of soft insistent kisses from her earlobe to the well of her shoulder blade. The sensation was like nothing she’d felt before—intimate, urging, almost desperate. Heaven help her, Emily wanted more. He slipped his hand down her back, molding her against him. The hot, hard bulge pressing against her belly ignited an answering heat in hers. Naughty. Wicked. Exciting… He asked a question, his voice a deep vibration that reached to her toes. Her very flesh tingled, sending shivers of delight through her. Her breasts ached and became exquisitely tender. She gasped as he drew her even closer, his large hands moving along her spine. “Yes…,” she sighed, affirming her suspicion that this man’s arms would be heaven. “Sweet…” His voice was hoarse with desire as he lifted his head to speak as he brushed across her lips. “Are you the most courageous woman I know…or the most reckless?” Reckless. Unconscionably reckless… He nudged her robe open with his chin and lowered his mouth to the slope of one aching breast. She caught her breath and choked back another gasp when he captured one tingling crown with his lips and tugged gently. She tangled her fingers through his dark hair to hold him close. The sensation was so foreign, yet so completely delicious, that she wanted it to go on forever. She sighed. “Tell me your…name, sir, that I…may know who my dreams…” “You mock me?” he growled. She gave a soft, husky laugh at his pretended outrage. The deep vibration of his voice against her skin sent shock waves along her spine. “By all that is holy…I must be mad! Were it any night but tonight, I’d sweep this desk clear and take you here and now.” Emily fervently wished it were any other night. She’d have yielded him anything--everything—when he nibbled a greedy path back up her neck and cherished the tender flesh at the hollow of her throat before lifting his head. He brushed tendrils of hair back from her cheeks with this thumbs. “Now that you’ve seen my face, my only safety—and yours—lies in the fact that you do not know who I am.” She did not bother to deny his accusation. But betrayal had been the furthest thing from her mind. She caught her breath on a gasp as he slipped his hand up her bare thigh, exposed in the gap of her robe. She struggled free of his arms and moved away, fighting to regain her composure and recall the true nature of this man. Blood-red splotches on his shirt sleeve reminded her that this man had murdered someone this very night. She would be fortunate if she escaped with her life. She pushed him away to gather her robe more closely around her. This had to end before she forgot herself again. She was breathless when she spoke. “Your ten minutes are up, sir. If you are a man of your word, you will leave.” Buy Links:

I couldn’t put it down and read it this morning while snuggling in bed! Liz writes romance for real life and this story is a perfect fit for that tag line. Brody and Sophie are flawed. They have baggage that draws them together, just like the rest of us. They want to be loved and needed. They want to be good at what they do and have doubts, fears and scars. Their past issues sometimes gets in the way of their own happiness. Stubborn and determined are only two words to describe both of them. But Liz has a twist up her sleeve. Readers will think they know this story but Liz shows you that life and love isn’t easy. It’s messy but can be wondrous at the same time. Liz also touches on the hot sports topic of head injuries. Doesn't this cover just make you melt? I love the beautiful background too. I've always heard about those wedding encounters but never found one in real life... Can't wait to see how this one works out! ![]() If You Want Me by Tara Mills An irresistible woman. An undeniable proposal. Even the unthinkable can sound reasonable when you mix alcohol, sexual frustration, and a bachelorette party—especially a bold proposition. Now in the light of day, Naomi’s hung over, horrified, and anxious about facing this complicated man again and the unexplored feelings their encounter brought with it. She called, he came, but Ryan didn't exactly conquer. Is it too much to hope that Naomi will give him a do-over? She can’t avoid him, not when he’s walking her down the aisle. But who ever heard of a bridesmaid getting cold feet? Excerpt: “I really need to get laid,” slurred Naomi, sagging drunkenly against her friend Becky. The entire table fell silent and stared at her. Every squeal over the upcoming honeymoon, every gush over the bridal gown came to a screeching halt. Becky turned on her, aghast, then shoved Naomi upright in her chair again. “What the hell?” she hissed under her breath. Naomi scrunched up her brow, perplexed as she weaved and wobbled, trying to focus on all the faces swimming in front of her. The female half of tomorrow’s wedding party. Each of them decked out and tarted up for tonight’s bachelorette blow-out. “What?” Naomi asked, stupefied by the wide eyes directed her way. “It’s been six months. Six damn months!” she added in a woeful tone. “Who wouldn’t have boner on the brain?” Two of the women across the table started to laugh behind their hands, but Becky shot to her feet anyway and grabbed Naomi’s arm, hauling her up too. “Sorry about this.” Becky gave Melissa, the bride, a pained and apologetic smile. “I think someone’s had one too many appletinis.” Becky grabbed both purses and slipped them over her arm and dragged Naomi through the crowded club and out to the sidewalk. She caught the eye of the first valet she saw and handed him the ticket. He dashed off to get their car. “He’s kinda cute,” said Naomi, swaying on her heels, her eyes fixed on his back as he disappeared into the night. Becky gritted her teeth. “Would you stop?” “Stop what?” Naomi blinked, nonplussed. “The horny talk. It’s embarrassing.” Naomi frowned. “Is it? I’m sorry. I just need sex. I really want it, Beck. I want it bad.” “So I gather. No alcohol for you tomorrow.” That comment earned a snort. “Who cares about alcohol?” “It makes you weird.” “Don’t I know it!” Naomi nodded sagely. “Beck, I’m getting the strangest ideas.” “Yeah, I noticed.” Their car pulled up and Becky caught hold of Naomi’s upper arm and steered her to the curb. A second valet came forward to open the passenger door while the first man got out and waited for Becky on the driver’s side. Naomi gave the guy holding her door a sweet smile and cupped his ass before dropping gracelessly into the passenger seat. One of her shoes fell to the pavement next to the car. The guy bent down and picked it up. He had a funny little smile going, and if she wasn’t totally mistaken, he was chuckling. “Like Cinderella!” Naomi laughed when he handed it to her then stuck her bare foot out the open door at him. “Don’t you want to put it on me?” Becky snapped at her from the driver’s side, “Naomi! Shut the hell up and let the guy close your door.” Naomi snickered and rolled her eyes at the valet, making a joke of her uptight friend. “Guess it’s time to go.” He closed her in with a nod and a wink. She gave him a little wave that he returned as Becky pulled into traffic. “Who are you, and what have you done with my friend?” Becky asked, blowing her bangs out of her eyes. “She’s in here somewhere.” Naomi drooped onto her door and squinted at the strobing lights coming right at them. “Did you notice Ryan at dinner earlier tonight?” Becky glanced sharply at her friend. “Is that what this is all about?” “Hmm?” “Never mind. Let’s get you home, dump a ton of water into you, and put you to bed. You need to be in good shape by tomorrow afternoon or Melissa’s mom is going to kill you, and Melissa is going to be the one handing her the cake knife she’ll use.” Naomi laughed as she pictured the mother-of-the-bride wielding the special cake knife with color coordinated ribbons fluttering from the handle. “That’s not gonna happen,” she assured Becky. “Of course it’s not. Because you’re going home and I’m putting you to bed.” Naomi gave a deep and disappointed sigh. “Party pooper.” “And whose fault is that?” Naomi shrugged then drifted off to sleep. She didn’t revive until the car pulled in front of her duplex. “We’re here.” Becky gave her shoulder a shake. “Wake up. Are you awake?” “Yeah.” Naomi blinked and rubbed her temple. “Where’s my purse?” “On the floor, by your feet.” Becky hopped out and walked around the car. “Come on, let’s get you inside.” “I’ve got it.” She shoved her shoulder against the door and nearly tumbled out. Luckily Becky was there in time to haul her back before she did a face plant on the driveway. “Thank you.” Beck held out her hand. “Give me your damn purse. There’s no way you’re going to be able to unlock the front door yourself.” Naomi didn’t argue. She took another stab at getting out and managed to close the car door without catching any body parts in it. Weaving on her feet, she clomped up the driveway, her gait even more ridiculous because she was still holding the one shoe the valet had given her at the club. Becky had already gotten the door open and the inside lights turned on by the time Naomi made it up the three concrete steps, grabbing hold of the wrought iron banister to keep from staggering backwards on her way up. “Should I brew a pot of coffee?” Becky asked, coming back from putting Naomi’s purse in her room. Naomi yawned and mussed up her hair, destroying all the hard work she’d put into getting the big silky curls just right earlier that evening. “No, I can manage. Thanks for bringing me home.” “Should I stay?” “No. I’ll be fine.” Becky eyed her skeptically. “You’re sure? You weren’t yourself tonight.” Naomi covered her eyes with both hands and expelled a big alcohol infused breath. “I know, Beck,” she peered out, pouting at her friend. “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you tonight.” “I guess we all have our off days. This was yours. I’ll get over it. It’s not like you do this kind of thing, well ... ever.” Becky laughed and came over, giving Naomi a hug goodnight. “So I’ll see you in the morning?” “At brunch.” “Eleven. Don’t forget to set your alarm. Something tells me you’re going to need it.” “I got it. I got it.” Becky kissed her on the cheek, uncertainty in her eyes as she peered at Naomi one last time. “You sure I shouldn’t stay?” “Very sure.” “Then I’ll see you in the morning.” “Sounds good.” Naomi limped to the door and locked it behind her friend. As soon as Becky had backed out of the driveway, Naomi kicked off her lone shoe, raced to her bedroom, and dumped the contents of her purse onto the bedspread. “Oh yeah!” she cheered. Grabbing the phone, she went immediately to the wedding party contact sheet on her dresser and followed down the line of ushers for Ryan’s name. He answered after two rings. Even tipsy she could hear the question in his voice. “Naomi?” “Yes. Where are you?” “At the bachelor party. Why?” “Here’s the thing. I know you had a problem with me dating Sam. You were his friend and I created a lot of tension between you two. I get it. But I’m guessing some of that attitude was just bullshit. I caught you.” “You caught me?” “Yes, I caught you; watching me, looking at me. I could tell you were covering.” “What’s this all about, Naomi? What’s your point?” “If you want me, I’m yours. I’m putting on sexy lingerie right now. You have fifteen minutes to get here. You know the address.” Naomi cut the call and eased open the top drawer of her dresser. "And some things we forget very easily." An undercurrent of anger laced her tone. Nate held her gaze. "Care to explain?” "There's nothing to explain. Not now anyway." For the first time all evening her polite tone dropped away. “Let’s just leave it and watch TV.” Leave it? After her implication, he couldn't just leave it. "Not happening. What did you mean?" Even if the best he could ever hope for with her was friendship, he needed to get past her anger first. Lauren unexpectedly jumped to her feet, took a few steps away and whirled around to face him. "Fine. You want to talk about the past? We'll talk. You promised to write. Do you remember that, too?" She took a step closer. "That day you said we'd stay in contact, but you never bothered." His gut winced. When he'd said the words way back then he'd meant them. He'd even tried once. He had picked up the phone, started to dial, and hung up. Unsure of just what he intended to say, Nate stood as well. "Lauren let me—" "Don't make up any excuses.” She stepped toward him and jabbed a finger into his shoulder. “I don't want to hear it. Besides, it doesn't matter now. We've both moved on." In one motion, Nate wrapped his hand around her wrist and pulled her closer. The sudden physical contact caused his heart rate to rev like the engine of his brother’s prized Corvette. “Bullshit.” With his hand still wrapped around her wrist, she took a step away from him. "Soon you'll go back to wherever the military wants you. We may never see each other again. The past doesn't matter." "Like I told you the other night, Lauren. I am not leaving." He focused on removing the anger from his voice. A cynical smile formed on her face. "You left the marines? Yeah, right. They mean more to you then I ever did." The anger he'd heard before diminished, but sadness took its place. Nate reached out his free hand and touched her cheek. "That's not true, and I'm no longer on active duty." The warmth from her skin managed to penetrate through the calluses on his hands. "I'm in the reserves now. Last month I graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico." Lauren's eyes flew open. "You're an FBI Agent? Seriously!" Her voice hit the next octave. Surprise and shock trumped anger any day of the week. "Yeah, in the Boston field office." "Wow, that's..." The awe in her voice trailed off. "That doesn't change anything." She took a step back, and his hand fell away. With the increased distance between them, again the sunshine he'd felt bathed in a moment ago disappeared. "I don't believe that." In two steps he closed the distance between them. Before she could move again he made his move. He let his lips brush against hers. Home. The word lit up in his head. Regardless of the years gone by, he belonged right here with this woman. He always had. About the Author: I wrote my first story with characters similar to those in the Sweet Valley Twins books at the age of 10 on my grandmother's manual typewriter. Three Days at the Lake is sure to pull at your emotions as the characters deal with a horrible event. How would you react? ![]() Three Days at The Lake by Lori Beth Johnson JohnsonAmanda and Nick were the all-American couple with a perfect little family. Yet, nothing could have prepared them for the ultimate tragedy that struck and tore their family apart. Years later they are forced to face each other and what happened on that gut-wrenching day. Can blame and guilt be overcome? Can a dormant love heal old wounds? For Nick and Amanda, it is the only chance they’ve got. Excerpt: Amanda stood at the window watching Nick at the dock. He'd been out in a canoe and now simply sat with his feet dangling, throwing rocks into the lake. She grabbed a light jacket and walked outside to join him. "Having fun?" She sat, but bent her knees to keep her feet on the dock. He didn't look at her as he picked up some more rocks. "Sure, just passing the time, I guess." She nodded. "It's almost like we're prisoners here." "Tell me about it." He threw another rock so hard that the water splashed around their feet. "You really do not want to be here with me, do you?" "I just don't see the point." "I don't either, but Jake must have thought there was one." "I'm sure that he thought we'd talk all weekend, maybe make up." "Make up? We didn't break up. We got divorced." She reached up and tucked her brown straight locks behind her ears so that they would stop blowing in her face. "Don't you think I know that?" "Well, the way you made it sound…." "I was just saying what Jake did, or what I thought he did." He sighed. "Hell, I don't know." "You really think that's what he wanted?" "Why else would he want us to do this?" She shrugged and he went on. "This place was special to us." "Yeah. He let us use it for our honeymoon weekend so we didn't have to spend a lot of money that we'd need for the baby." "Jake was a good guy." "He really was. And we did have a great honeymoon." She grinned. "In spite of my baby bump." Nick closed his eyes and squeezed before blinking them back open. "We did, and that baby bump was adorable." She touched her flat stomach and an old ache settled there. "We were so happy then." "Funny how things change." "Funny?" "Ironic, maybe. It's just weird how one event can turn your whole world upside down and change everything." "I know." She stood. "I've got bread baking so I better get back inside." "See you later." "Sure." She's not only a wonderful friend but her writing is so sizzling that the pages burn! It's nice to see that all writers have similar issues and that readers still find characters that they relate to! Here's Lila to share her thoughts on Private Pirouette! ![]() Private Pirouette had been sitting for about a year finished before I turned it loose and passed it into the hands of Jenn over at Rebel Ink Press. I had so many irons in the fire it had been shoved to the bottom of the pile more than once. Originally it was slated to be a series, but was ultimately released as a stand-alone. One of the reasons it was shoved to the bottom of the pile so many times was book 2 Private Impropriety wasn’t going so well and I doubted it would ever make it off the drawing board as more than an idea. Not a few days after Private Pirouette debuted, however, reader demands started coming in as to what was going to happen to the other two heroes, Chaney and Brady. Okay, maybe there would be a book two…then again maybe not. I dragged it out and started working on it, to no avail. It still wasn’t right. Book 2 is Chaney’s story and I had him originally paired with the Jenni, one of Piper’s friends. The problem with Jenni is she’s just too much of a mess. I know right? The queen of conflict and realmantic having issues with someone with too much baggage? Never thought you’d see that one huh? While preparing the promo pack for Private Pirouette, I went through my files and guess what caught my attention? Yes, Private Impropriety hopped out at me. However, I think I’ve since found the problem—a huge one actually which will nearly require a complete and total rewrite, but one I’m willing to deal with if this story can get off the ground. It seems Chaney is better fitted to Piper’s sister Lacey—there is a scene in Private Pirouette when it seems they may hit it off, but then the nearly absent father of Lacey’s baby reappears and puts the brakes on that…I’m thinking that little pipsqueak needs to go. He’s a loser and Chaney would make a great husband and daddy…we shall see…I know this will make my readers happy to finally get their hands on book 2. In the meantime, Private Pirouette can be yours for a mere $0.99 from Amazon September 16-18…Come watch the dance readers fell in love with and so did Alec… Piper McGee can smell a set up a mile away. She can smell a Marine even further. Born to a dual-enlisted couple who divorced before she was old enough to remember a single family holiday together and proceeded to redefine the very definition of family through several marriages and even more step-siblings, Piper has made it her life’s promise to herself to never become involved with one of the few and the proud. They’re among the most irresponsible people she knows, leaving destruction in their wake and broken hearts paving the way to their next duty station. And in her opinion, Alec Douglas is just another example, until he pries her heart open along with other parts of her, making her question everything she's ever let herself believe about honor, courage, and commitment. What does a man do with six month’s down time and no warm body to share his bed? For Sergeant Alec Douglas, contemplating that question led him to fall prey to his two best friend’s plan to find him that very thing. They know Alec has yet to stay with any one person for more than a few dates. They also know a tragedy from his past created the problem and while that haunts him, making it nearly impossible for Alec to trust his heart to anyone, they also know he’s a sucker for a challenge. Will the enticement of a few thousand dollars riding on him breaking his own rule be just the thing to break his cycle? Taking their bet might be profitable, but is winning the money they’ve dangled under Alec’s nose worth losing himself to the girl they’ve picked out for him? In his quest to get her to say yes to his crazy proposal, he tracks her all over town only to discover the beautiful, long-legged blond isn’t the studious book worm he mistook her for. In fact, she's one of Jacksonville’s finest in the form of Orchid, exotic dancer. Her rejection only spurs him to make sure her dancing days are over and she only performs her private pirouette for him, and only him, for the rest of their lives if he has his way. Please enjoy an excerpt: With all the shades drawn in her tiny apartment, it was still relatively dark at nine when Piper left her bed. After a quick shower, she slipped on her soft worn robe and padded into the kitchen to start her day with her usual Coke Zero and chocolate glazed donut. Alec was lying on her couch on his back with one foot on the floor, one arm dangling beside him, and his mouth hanging open. She wanted to make a lot of noise just to irritate him, but then had second thoughts. As long as he slept, she could sit in the chair beside the tiny couch and stare at how good looking he was. Too bad he was a Marine. He was definitely someone she could grow accustomed to looking at. In the dim light of the room, the auburn stubble running over his jaw only added to his rugged handsomeness. She caught herself staring at his lips, trying to remember the last time she’d been kissed. Had it been so long she couldn’t recall? God, how she needed a life. Just not at the expense of her goals. She was putting her empty bottle in the recycle bin sitting near the door when she heard her guest stir and groan. Served him right. He should be miserable. “Oh, shit.” He moaned and rubbed his head. “Good morning, Prince Charming,” Piper whispered, leaning over him. “It’s time for Orchid to get ready for work. Therefore, you need to get up so I can drop you off on my way.” His eyes flew open and darted around, finally focusing on her face just inches from his. “In case you forgot, I’m Piper, AKA Orchid, and you’re two first names—Alec Douglas.” “Yes, I remember who you are and my own name.” He eased up and sat back with his hands on his head. “You wouldn’t happen to have something for a headache around here would you?” Piper disappeared and came back with two red and blue capsules and a glass of water. “What, are you rationing?” His nose twisted up and he sounded annoyed. “No, that’s how much one should take.” She sat in the chair again and pulled her legs up under her. “Okay, now explain this plan of yours to me thoroughly.” “What plan?” “Your plan to make me almost rich by the end of the year.” “Did we discuss that? Is that why I’m here? Which is where by the way?” With the glass empty, Alec got up, made his way around the couch, and wandered into the tiny galley kitchen behind it. “This is my apartment and yes, we discussed it. You’re here because you threw up in my car last night and weren’t able to tell me where you live.” Alec shook his head, drank another glass of water, and filled the tumbler again. “It’s very simple really. Chaney and Brady each put up a month’s pay to be turned over to me once I complete the mission, which is stay with one girl for six months before we deploy again. That’s where you come in. They picked you at the restaurant yesterday.” He sat once again. “Simple enough, you pretend to be my girlfriend until then and we win an easy fifteen hundred each.” “What’s wrong with you?” Piper accused. “Excuse me?” Alec said, scrunching his eyebrows together. “I said…What? Is? Wrong? With? You?” she repeated slowly as if talking to a child. “Aside from either you can’t hear from too much artillery fire or you have a problem paying attention.” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” he defended. “Then why? Why do you need them to choose someone and what’s the problem they can’t believe you’d stay with someone for that long? Are you a man whore?” Piper accused, tapping one foot waiting for his answer. “I…um…I’ve never stayed with one person for longer than a few dates,” he admitted. “So you are a man whore,” she concluded. Thanks for spending a few of your realmantic moments with me, Alec, and Piper today…happy reading! Lila Munro I love Ella Jade's books. Her stories are sexy and tantalizing. His whole family will be there in addition to his obsessed ex-girlfriend Ava. According to Spencer’s brother, Ava has been telling her friends she’s planning a magical reunion with her favorite ex-boyfriend. Spencer’s not in the mood to deal with her, but he can’t miss the wedding. He needs a plan. Struggling Brooklyn waitress and aspiring graphic designer Dakota Vercelli has fallen on hard times. College debts, pending eviction, and her sick mother are taking a toll on her. A chance encounter with Mr. Cannon, CEO of Cannon and Carrington Advertising, leads to a proposition that may be just the thing to solve both of their problems. He needs a weekend girlfriend, and Dakota needs the cash. It was just supposed to be a business deal, but after sharing a room, kissing under the stars, and attending a wedding, their attraction is undeniable. Actually, I have to leave tomorrow afternoon. I don’t want to go alone for reasons I don’t wish to discuss right now. I need someone to accompany me. I’m offering that to you.” “And you think I’m ‘to the point’?” He smiled but didn’t say anything. She couldn’t stand the silence. She wanted to figure out his game. There had to be some sort of catch. “You want me to go to a wedding with you?” “It’s in Connecticut. I would require your services until Sunday afternoon. All of your expenses would be paid, including a wardrobe which would be yours to keep after the weekend.” “You need a date?” “I would need you to appear as my girlfriend.” “Is this a joke?” “I wouldn’t joke about something like this. I’ve thought the entire thing through.” “A man who looks like you should have no problem finding a real girlfriend to buy clothes for and flaunt in front of his family.” She thought for a moment. “Unless there’s something wrong with you.” “There’s nothing wrong with me.” He raised his voice a bit. “I had planned on attending alone but circumstances have changed. I’m in a bind and from what I gather, you are too.” Her instincts screamed to run in the opposite direction. She’d never been the type to fall for a scam. “I’m not interested in—” “I’ll pay you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for your time.” “What?” Apparently a side of crazy came with those good looks. “One hundred and twenty-five thousand today, if you agree.” He pulled out a check from the inside pocket of the jacket he had draped on the back of the chair. He slipped the mint green paper across the table. “You’ll get the rest on Sunday afternoon.” “That’s fifty grand a day.” She studied the check. It would take her years to make that kind of money working these shit-end jobs. “I’m aware.” He nodded as if the money meant nothing. “I’m asking for your time, a commodity I believe should be well compensated.” Too good to be true. “Do you make it a habit of paying women to be your girlfriend?” “Pretend girlfriend,” he reminded her. “You would be the first.” “Why me?” “Does it matter?” “What exactly do you expect me to do for that money?” “I told you.” He narrowed his eyes. “I need a date for a long weekend. Everyone needs to think we’re a couple.” “You’re willing to pay me to go away with you for four days. I’m supposed to take your word we’re going to a wedding in Connecticut? How do I know you won’t kidnap me and want to do all sorts of kinky stuff to me? You could be some sex-obsessed lunatic.” “Kinky stuff?” “Yeah, you know, like bondage and blindfolds.” “Do you like that sort of thing?” He tried to conceal his smirk. ![]() About EllaElla Jade has been writing for as long as she can remember. Today I have Stacey Brutger on with her Raven Investigations Series. The first book Electric Storm is also available if you want to know more about Raven, but here to share some of book two: Electric Moon~ is Stacey Brutger. ![]() Thank you for having me on your blog! I hope you enjoy this little peek into my deliciously dark urban fantasy, Electric Moon. Electric Moon – A Raven Investigations Novel : Book 2 Short blurb: DURING THE FULL MOON, A KILLER STALKS FOR PREY AMONGST THE SHIFTERS. TEMPERS RISE, LUST EXPLODES, AND ONE WOMAN IS THE CENTER OF IT ALL. Raven’s private life explodes into the spotlight when she is nominated as a Region on the paranormal police force. As she juggles the demands of pack life and police work, the lines between duty and loyalty blur. Shifters are dying. Raven suspects something sinister is destroying the pack from within. She must dig into the dark corners of the paranormal world, secrets they would kill to protect, and find the killer before her pack becomes the next target. Excerpt: Raven woke to sunlight and an empty bed. Why did all the men sneak out of her room as if ashamed? She sat, tossing back the covers and stopped to see a box with a bow on the dresser. Raven searched but saw no card. Inside the box rested a blue set of gloves that ended at the wrist, secured with a button. “Taggert.” She fingered the supple leather, feeling a bit foolish at the thrill over such a small gift. Gathering the armload of her items, she walked in the bathroom. And stopped short. Taggert was in the shower. As in naked. He noticed her the minute she’d entered, but instead of acknowledging her presence, he continued to wash. The drag of his hand down on his body slowed. Suds played peek-a-boo with her imagination. His chest was completely smooth, and she had an irrelevant thought that he must’ve shaved himself in preparation of her walking in on him. Then Raven saw his erection and knew without a doubt that he was showing off. And despite herself, it took a good minute for her brain to kick into gear. She whirled, her face heating, and she wished she could say it was in embarrassment. Part of her mourned not being able to see where his hand ended up, the animal part of her tried to get a better angle in the mirror. The shower turned off within a minute. “I’ll finish getting ready in my room.” Without an ounce of shyness, Taggert strolled out of the room. She expected him to be wearing a towel. He was in a way. He used it to dry his hair. She watched him walk, fascinated with the smooth expanse of his skin, the liquid way his muscles moved. Who would have thought she was such an ass woman? He needs a weekend girlfriend, and Dakota needs the cash. It was just supposed to be a business deal, but after sharing a room, kissing under the stars, and attending a wedding, their attraction is undeniable. Will the illusion end when the weekend is over or is the proposition just the beginning? Content Warning: contains mature language and graphic sexual content Excerpt: "I have a proposition for you," Spencer said. "A proposition?" What could he possibly have to offer her? "I have to attend my cousin's wedding this weekend. Actually, I have to leave tomorrow afternoon. I don't want to go alone for reasons I don't wish to discuss right now. I need someone to accompany me. I'm offering that to you." "And you think I'm 'to the point'?" Coda shrugged. He smiled but didn't say anything. She couldn't stand the silence. She wanted to figure out his game. There had to be some sort of catch. "You want me to go to a wedding with you?" "It's in Connecticut. I would require your services until Sunday afternoon. All of your expenses would be paid, including a wardrobe which would be yours to keep after the weekend." "You need a date?" "I would need you to appear as my girlfriend." "Is this a joke?" she asked. "I wouldn't joke about something like this. I've thought the entire thing through." "A man who looks like you should have no problem finding a real girlfriend to buy clothes for and flaunt in front of his family." She thought for a moment. "Unless there's something wrong with you." "There's nothing wrong with me." He raised his voice a bit. "I had planned on attending alone but circumstances have changed. I'm in a bind and from what I gather, you are too." Her instincts screamed to run in the opposite direction. She'd never been the type to fall for a scam. "I'm not interested in—" "I'll pay you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for your time." "What?" Apparently a side of crazy came with those good looks. "One hundred and twenty-five thousand today, if you agree." He pulled out a check from the inside pocket of the jacket he had draped on the back of the chair. He slipped the mint green paper across the table. "You'll get the rest on Sunday afternoon." "That's fifty grand a day." She studied the check. It would take her years to make that kind of money working these shit-end jobs. "I'm aware." He nodded as if the money meant nothing. "I'm asking for your time, a commodity I believe should be well compensated." Too good to be true. "Do you make it a habit of paying women to be your girlfriend?" "Pretend girlfriend," he reminded her. "You would be the first." "Why me?" "Does it matter?" "What exactly do you expect me to do for that money?" “I told you." He narrowed his eyes. "I need a date for a long weekend. Everyone needs to think we're a couple." "You're willing to pay me to go away with you for four days. I'm supposed to take your word we're going to a wedding in Connecticut? How do I know you won't kidnap me and want to do all sorts of kinky stuff to me? You could be some sex-obsessed lunatic." "Kinky stuff?" "Yeah, you know, like bondage and blindfolds." "Do you like that sort of thing?" He tried to conceal his smirk. Ian Donovan isn’t always a nice guy. He’s had bad relationships before, is jealous of his brother and acts impulsively. But when he returns to Michigan to help his brother, he’s a changed man. As he becomes the driving force behind the brewery he and his brother own, he isolates himself. It takes a damaged man to drive a wedge into his walls. Nick Traynor thought he had it all until a moment changes his world forever. He can’t forgive himself for things that weren’t his fault. While Nick is able to break down the walls that Ian has built, he is unable to break the walls around his own heart. Hannah Williams comes onto the scene and helps both men see that they are missing pieces that can only be complete as a part of a new family…one forged in pain and forgiveness. Honey Red is a tale of love, loss, friendship and sex. Relationships between families is pushed to the limits as the characters of Honey Red swirl in the fermenting machine only to become sweeter. Ms. Crowe knows how to evoke honest emotion from her readers and had me rooting for healing and passion at times. She also had me wanting to kick a character or two in the butt. But it is her way of writing that brings the strong desire to read more of her writing. We get that life is messy and happily ever after is possible but we also know that it takes a little blood, sweat and tears to make it happen. Honey Red will make you fall in love with Ms. Crowe’s writing and her characters. Certainly a read you shouldn’t miss! Zombies are the new vampires. His life would be stark, but for the dreams he’s been having; of a woman, so sensuous, so sexy. These alluring visions have become erotic and consuming. He feels as if he made her up to keep from going crazy. Is this life of hunting the walking dead, all there is? Or is she out there, waiting…just for him? Excerpt: I might have a normal life now—well as normal of a life a freak of nature that lives in a world filled with infected people can have. Normal…as in training daily to fight and kill to stay alive as well as keep others safe. But it was a bit difficult for me growing up. No mother, abnormal genes and being raised by a single parent, my father, Lance. Don’t get me wrong, he’s the best father a girl could ask for. I think he did an excellent job raising me. He taught me everything I know and then some. Well, with the exception of a few minor details that a father prefers not to discuss with his only daughter, you know, the ‘sex talk’. When I was checked over just recently, the doctors determined that I could have children, just like any other woman in the world. As a result, my dad actually had one of the local female physicians give me the talk. Oh yea, that was fun! I believe I had Doc Smith blushing when I blurted out everything I knew. Which I have mostly learned from the guys at the training center and my team mates. They always speak openly and boldly of their conquests and love lives. Then of course, there are my dreams. I’ve not told her about those though. She said I knew an awful lot for not having experience in that area. THAT made me blush and we ended that conversation right there. My dad couldn’t look me in the eye that evening when I got home. I was smiling the entire time, knowing how awkward he felt about having to send me to someone else for the talk. I didn’t tease him or anything though, despite my constant grin. Well, I did in my mind, but I knew he would be even more uncomfortable if I did. I couldn’t do that to him. He’s had enough to deal with, just having to hold on to the secret. The secret which lives within in me. He’s kept it for so long, on top of having to continue living with the loss of his one true love and soul mate, my mother Jasmine. There are some others beside my dad and myself, who know what I truly am, but not many. My dad had no other choice but to try and find out more about me and what to expect as I grew and developed. He wanted to be prepared in case of anything happening because of my DNA. There seems to be no other part zombies of any sort around. So, he went to a couple of his closest friends who worked in the medical field, and they ran a multitude of tests on me. Comparing me to other humans, other zombies, even a few animals (to date there’s never been an infected animal of any type). I don’t remember much about most of it. I was way too young to hold those memories. I do recall lights, very bright ones and some smells. I now know what one particular scent was. Zombies. Boy, do those suckers stink! I think it’s my heightened senses that make it so bad. I’d describe their scent as a combination of the stink in the air which comes into a car window when driving by an old sewage plant on a very hot day, combined with a rotted corpse. The smell of death reeks! My dad always tells me he doesn’t smell them the way I do. Not even close. He can only smell them when he’s up close and getting personal with handing them their death. One of those ‘up close and personal meet the end of my machete’ types of meetings. He’s been by my side for all of it. He still is to this day. Even every month, when I have to go renew my proof of living, he’s right there by my side. He insists on being there in case any changes occur within me. So, I won’t have to feel alone or frightened. All they do to process anyone for their proof of living (which everyone has to go through no less than once a month) is prick your finger to draw a bit of blood. I guess you could say it’s somewhat similar to what a diabetic would do to test their blood sugar. Except in this case, they’re checking for a different sort of abnormality within. You know, the fucked up infected kind.
