She caught a glimpse of him as he made a right down another hall. A few seconds later, she made the same right. This hall was less crowded. She could see as Brodan glanced around, but obviously didn’t see her, and ducked into a classroom.

She walked quickly around a group of guys talking. A couple of them watched her as she passed but didn’t say anything—she was starting to get the impression the other students thought she was like a pet of Will and his friends. Whatever.

At the doorway where Brodan had disappeared, she paused. A part of her felt like some freak stalker, but another part knew there was something odd going on.

She walked into the classroom, empty but for tall, blond Brodan standing by the teacher’s desk, faced away from her.

Then his coloring changed, darkened.

She watched, confused, as another boy stepped back, as if separating himself from Brodan. This other boy had dark hair and wore a black jacket.

Brodan shook his head and looked around the room, obviously confused. The other boy stood there and watched, still turned away from Ilona. As Brodan glanced around, she realized he couldn’t see the other boy. The ghost. But she’d thought Soll was the only one who could do that.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “Who are you?”

Brodan turned and looked at her. “Ilona.”

The other boy tensed, and she guessed he was about the make a jump.

“Don’t,” she demanded.

He stayed but didn’t turn.

“Ilona,” Brodan said. “What’s going on?”

She realized he had no idea he’d been possessed. “Do you feel all right?” she asked.

“Yeah.” He glanced around. “But I don’t remember why I came in here.”

“Other than that, you’re not…confused?” Soll had made people go insane when he’d possessed them. If this ghost had messed with Brodan’s head, she was going to find a way to kick his ass.

“No,” Brodan said. “We were talking, and then I walked away from you for some reason. Maybe I should go to the nurse’s office or some shit.”

“I don’t think you should.” They’d think he was going nuts, which she wasn’t positive he wasn’t, but he wasn’t acting crazy like Soll’s victims had. “Just go to your next class. We’ll talk later.”

“Yeah,” he said. “All right. See you later.” He walked past her out of the room.

Ilona glared at the ghost. He was wearing the same kind of clothes Nex did. Maybe this was a member who’d died?

“Did Soll teach you how to do that?” Her voice was cold.

He shook his head, not enough to allow her to see the side of his face.

She moved closer. Something about his frame seemed familiar—maybe this boy was what caused Brodan to seem familiar…but that would mean he’d been present the other two times she’d talked to Brodan, that she’d never talked to Brodan only.

“You belonged to Nex in life,” she said, “didn’t you?”

He hesitated and then nodded.

“I’m not going to let you torment people,” she said. “You may as well just move on.”

He was quiet and still.

She continued slowly closer. “Why won’t you talk?”

Nothing.

“Answer me.”

Several quiet seconds passed.

Finally, he said, “Because I made you a promise.”

While billions of people died in the terror wars, the population still remains larger than the post war world can sustain, so strict population control regulations are established.

For the average citizen, a young woman has only one chance to have a baby. That is during her first time having sex. Upon that one time, she must immediately go to the doctor and have her birth control device (BCD) installed. If later it turns out she is pregnant, it is deemed a ‘virgin birth’ and she may keep the child. Since the chances of pregnancy are very low for a virgin birth, most women of the poor and middle classes will never have any children to carry on their name.

This results in some women trying to get around the law by having their BCD removed. However, to succeed, the woman will need to hide for the last six months of her pregnancy, then have the baby with only the help of friends who will keep her secret. Once the child is physically born she can keep it. However, most women are caught before they can birth the child. Then the unborn child is aborted and the mother is charged with murder and imprisoned for life.

For the upper middle-class and people with critical jobs, they can apply for a permit to have a child. These are rare and highly coveted.

While the rich claim to live under the same rules, in reality, their lives are very different. Young debutantes are declared to be virgins for as long as it takes for them to conceive a child.

Wealthy men want lots of children, so after a young debutante has birthed him a child, she can be set aside for another debutante. As to whom will raise the child, a man has many choices. He can marry the mother and allow her to raise and nurture the child. He can take the child and have someone else raise it for him or he can allow the mother to raise it until the child is of use to him, at which time he will claim his offspring.

Being a debutante was little more than being a pampered breeding cow and Alisha wants none of it! Thankfully, she’d escaped the life her parents had planned for her.

While no one liked the new laws, everyone understood the necessity. The world simply could not support the pre-war population. ​Once again, I stayed up unable to put a book down. I needed to find out how the young heroine, Alisha, would survive her time with the Sky Ryders. 

Alisha is resourceful and determined. She won't let anyone get in her way as she sets out to protect her grandfather, the one person who loves her for who she is. Alisha is determined to follow in his footsteps and learns how to ride the winds, giving her a chance for a career and an honest life.

The women he dated were more interested in his money and his position in life than getting to know him, and he started to think that he would never find the right woman. Seeing his sister’s happiness with his best friend had given him hope that something might change, but after years of choosing work over dating, he might had to admit to himself that he missed the one woman he was meant to be with.

After presenting her request to Rebecca, Lucian quickly offers to pose as her boyfriend. Pushing aside her attraction, she knew that nothing could come from her interest to Lucian and scoffed at the idea. They were complete opposites. But the more she refused, the more he charmed his way into her life, until she found herself agreeing to the preposterous plan.

She walked out of the office and toward the elevators, aware of his slight touch on her arm and his arm brushing her shoulder with each step.  She felt as though she’d run a marathon by the time they arrived at the exit.  When she turned to say good-bye, he walked her back into the elevator until she was pressed back against the farthest wall.

After the doors had closed, he reached behind him and absently flipped the stop elevator button, which caused the elevator car to darken, giving him a more dangerous air.  She couldn’t decipher his look as he crowded her against the wall, but she could feel the constrained energy that pulsed through his body and into hers.  Instead of shrinking away from the effect he had on her, she held her ground.

“At least you’re not immune to me,” he murmured.

“I have a feeling that very few women are.”

He pressed against her, and she could feel the vibrations from his deep laughter pass through her.  She sucked in a breath and closed her eyes as she felt his taut chest, muscular and hard, as he leaned against her.  Her hands itched to travel up his stomach and caress his chest, and feel his hardness for herself.  Her eyes kept traveling along the length of his body, not caring how much time had passed.

“I never denied that I was attracted to you.  All I said was that I can’t see other people believing that we’re a couple,” she muttered.

He captured her gaze for a split second before he lowered his head and brushed his lips against hers in a touch so gentle, she thought she might have imagined it.  Without conscious thought, she leaned toward him, wanting more than a simple touch, but he cupped her cheeks in his hands and captured her gaze in his unwavering one.

“If we weren’t in an elevator, in a public building, I would show you how compatible we are,” he growled.

“We just met.  I would like to get to know you before I do something stupid, like dive in headfirst and have an affair with you.”

“It wouldn’t be an affair, love,” he promised.

“Do you call all the women you know love?” she asked.

He shook his head.  “Get to know me, and you’ll see how serious I am,” he growled.

She shook her head, but she didn’t know whether she was trying to deny his words, or whether she contemplated taking him up on his offer.  The sooner he realized that she wasn’t his type of woman, the sooner he would move on.  Her heart kicked in her chest, hard and painfully, at the thought of him with another woman.

The side of his mouth lifted, and her breath caught in her throat.  He wasn’t the type of man who would give up on something that he wanted, and at the moment, he wanted her.

She’d never been a cautious woman when it came to something she wanted, but wanting this man was borderline lunacy.  Her mind flipped back and forth, all while she kept her eyes on his.  She tried to clear some of the fog that had descended from his nearness, but he interpreted her movement as denial.

“I guess I’ll have to convince you then.”  He groaned.

Before she could figure out what he meant, he leaned toward her and captured her mouth in a kiss so decadent, she felt her knees weaken and her body shake with a need she’d never felt before in her life.

She gripped his forearms for support, and when she sucked in a breath at the hard muscles underneath her hands, he took advantage and deepened the kiss.  His tongue swept in.  As he tasted her, her hands crawled up his arms until she wrapped them around his shoulders and hung on.

She heard a ringing in a distance, and moaned a protest when he broke the kiss.  Her chest heaved with exertion, and when her thoughts solidified several moments after he’d pulled away, she realized that her arms were still wrapped around his shoulders.  Instead of pulling away as he would have expected, she laid her head on his chest and listened to the steady beat of his heart.

“That was easy,” she murmured.

“What was?” he asked.

“To forget where I was, and kiss a man I just met.”

Each time a book is released, we like to celebrate. After all, putting a book out is a lot of work. Starting with a dream or idea, the writer has to put the images on paper, crafting the perfect story. Next they go through the edits where the story is fine tuned and polished. Finally, the book gets a cover and is formatted. When it is released, it's a time for celebration. “Caleb, what’s happening to me?”
He glanced at me and turned his body a fraction so I had his full attention. “I’m trying to figure that out.”
“Is it magic?”
“I think it’s bigger than that.”
“So these people looking for me, they were right?”
“I think so.”
“This is crazy,” I said in disbelief. “I keep thinking I might wake up one day and all of this will just be one big misunderstanding, but it’s becoming more real.”
“Do you want to wake up?” he asked.
I thought back to the very first moment I laid eyes on Caleb and all the crap that had happened since. My life was a mess and a lie. I was in physical danger and lusting after someone I could never have. “Not all of the time,” I said, my breathing becoming shallow. “Sometimes I’m scared I’ll wake up and realize the best parts of this nightmare are just a dream.”
“Sometimes you have to dream to get to what’s real.”
“I’m sick of dreaming,” I said, catching the glint in his eye. I wanted him to close this space between us, and I wanted him to kiss me right now. I could almost feel his mouth on mine. I could feel his hands in my hair, tugging my head back softly as he covered my mouth with his own. I could feel every bit of him in my soul, yet he hadn’t lain a finger on me; I wanted to scream.

About the Author:
I was born in Santa Monica, California, but I have lived most of my life in the North East of England. I am 28 years old and when I am not writing I work part time as a Hotel Receptionist. I read from a very young age, sitting in libraries for hours as a child and only turned to writing in 2013 when the book idea for Falling Awake grew so strong that I couldn't not write it. I write Young Adult and New Adult Romance, which is also the genres that I enjoy reading myself.
