Genre: FICTION / Romance / General / Science Fiction
Hundreds of years after an asteroid slammed into Earth and sent it into a new ice age, what remains of the human race lives on in underground sanctuaries. Now, as the bicentennial anniversary of the impact approaches, a
new leader prepares to take her place at the head of the government. At least, that’s what she thinks.
Bethanie Greene’s life has been planned out for her since the age of thirteen. Beautiful and intelligent, she’s spent the last twelve years training to become the next Matron of the underground nation of Oceania. But when Bethanie is kidnapped by rogue extremists just six weeks shy of taking office, her world is turned upside down by the handsome stranger who rescues her.
Howard James’ life has been the polar opposite of Bethanie’s. Struggling to survive in a world where those in power wished he didn’t exist, he harbors a deep-seated resentment of the government and all its representatives. Together with his unconventional family, he shows Bethanie a life she never knew was possible, while at the same time, opening her eyes to the injustices of the government she is meant to lead.
But can she trust a stranger? And can a few days change everything she believes and desires? Against all odds, Bethanie must decide if her heart and her duties can coexist.
EXCERPT
My body shakes at the thought of what could have happened to me yet again. I’ve heard stories about the slums, and I have to take a few deep breaths to calm myself.
“I was silly running away, I get it. I just couldn’t stay in your home any longer.”
Howard sighs. “Just because my parents raised us with traditionalist values doesn’t mean we are anything like the Trads. You accused us of being a drain on society, but you don’t even know us.”
“You’re right, I don’t. But you don’t know me either. If you did, you would understand why it’s hard for me to understand your way of life. It goes against every law, moral, and convention I’ve been taught. So I can’t be sorry for what I said, even if I’m sorry I ran out of the house.”
Howard takes a deep breath, then exhales long and slow. The expression on his face looks a bit like pity but with a dash of guilt mixed in. “Look, maybe I’ve judged you unfairly based on preconceived notions, but—”
A loud bang echoes outside. Howard glances at me with a panicked look on his face, and then pulls me off the crate onto the floor behind. I sit up, and turn to yell at him, but male voices outside keep my mouth closed. I instead huddle closer to Howard as he puts his hand around my shoulders. He pulls me in until I’m tucked against him.
“Did you see where she went?” a man’s voice asks.
“Nah, she just vanished.” The voice of this one sounds young.
“Damn, the boss isn’t going to be pleased about this.”
The crunch of shoes against pavement indicates they are on the move again. The sounds trail off until they’re no longer audible. I sigh in relief, all the tension fleeing my body.
“Are you okay?’ Howard asks, rubbing my shoulder.
I glance up, only then noticing how little space is between us. His blue eyes have flecks of grey in them, and there’s a smattering of freckles covering his nose and cheeks. His warm breath tickles my cheek almost like a caress, and his jaw has the barest hint of a five o’clock shadow. He really is captivating.
“I’m fine,” I eventually say, the words a mere whisper.
The butterflies in my stomach return with a vengeance. Howard licks his lips as they turn up ever so slightly in a smile.
“Good.”
I can’t stop the sigh that slips past my own lips. Howard leans forward a little, then moves closer still until his mouth is pressed against mine. I don’t dare move. A zing of something, I’m not sure whether it’s pleasure or fear, shoots through me. His lips are soft and wet, and the sensation is unlike anything I’ve felt before. I can’t even decide if I want him to continue or stop. When he pulls away though, a feeling of disappointment bubbles up inside me.
My first kiss.
Goosebumps cover me from head to toe, and unbidden, my fingers move to my lips. Glancing at Howard, he stares at me for a minute, then moves to sit further away.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
I shrug. “It’s okay.”
Howard frowns and then looks across the room.
Part of Matron training is learning not to form close relationships. It doesn’t mean it never happens. I’ve heard the odd story here and there from the other women, and I realise that’s probably what Gail was trying to tell me at breakfast the other day. But in all honesty, I can’t remember the last time I had real physical contact with anyone, above all with a man.
We sit in uncomfortable silence for a few minutes. Tension rolls off Howard in waves.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Come on,” Howard whispers. “We need to get to the house before those guys come back.”

Mina’s Adventures Series, Book 6
Maria Grazia Swan
Cozy Romantic Suspense, 188 pages
Mina Calvi, Italian transplant to Southern California, thinks her love life might finally come together, just as her professional life has. Her Furry Friends Foundation, a no-kill shelter for rescued cats and dogs, is a success, and Mina hopes she may find a loving forever home for herself, in the arms of Diego Moran, her elusive, frustratingly mysterious, on again-off again, lover.
When a seemingly innocent night out with friends lands Mina in a hospital bed and Diego undercover, and not the covers Mina wants him to be under, Mina has to draw on all her new-found maturity, and all her supportive friends for strength.
Meanwhile, a Best in Show cat takes up residence at the Ritzy Cats B&B, Mina’s other venture, setting Mina on the trail of a suspicious character who might not have the cat's best interests at heart.
Add a Matchmaker to the Stars, a temperamental Italian chef and the usual menagerie of people and pets, stir it all up and you have an entertaining, hard to put down romantic tale of suspense.
Excerpt:
Did he love her?
In the heat of the night, love was a given. But as daylight unfolded, her insecurities found their path to her heart. Mina didn’t move, afraid the slightest shifting might wake him. His chest rose and fell against her back as he breathed peacefully. Their bodies touched, connected in a perfect fit. A match made in heaven she repeated to herself, in heaven but not on earth?
The longing she felt for him transcended sex and lust. Eyes closed, she revisited their good-bye two years ago in the cemetery in Italy, and that sense of unconditional love he’d brought into her life. It was the kind of love Mina assumed girls customarily expected from a father, a brother, a kin. But that was only a guess, a yearning, since she’d grown up without parents or siblings, so she had never experienced such love, until then, during that magical Italian summer.
Diego stirred and brushed his lips up and down the nap of her neck. “Missed you,” he whispered.
Now wide-awake, Mina quipped, “You missed me? How?”
“How?” In one fluid motion he spun her around, her body pressed against his. “How did I miss you?’
He paused, his eyes burning from a surge of passion she hadn’t seen coming. “For the last two years I carried with me the image of you in your red dress. The way you looked the last time I was near you. It’s branded in my soul. I couldn’t rid myself of it. Even now a glimpse of a red dress would arouse me. I’d be aroused not by the woman wearing it, but by the memory of you in that red dress.”

Her escape succeeds, and she joins her own kind at the other end of the planet. Among her new friends she meets many who help her adjust to their happier life. Will Annabel find romance? Or will another war break her down? EXCERPT: Annabel stopped at the end of the pier, and covered her face with her hands as tears rolled down her cheeks. That emotional moment had triggered memories from the Old Land and the Varkins. She remembered Kate, and how she had promised her freedom but was not able to keep that promise. She remembered her family she had lost, and her boyfriend who’d betrayed her. She wished the Big Change had never happened and she was still a human, with her family and friends. She thought she missed the Old Land, even the Varkins. She would never have thought she would think again about that dark place. Annabel stood at the pier and cried as the wind was blowing her tears away. She heard footsteps approaching her from behind. "Excuse me?" One of the fishermen was talking to her, a crying stranger. "Something happened? Do you need help?" "No...Nothing," Annabel replied and turned away. "I know we don’t know each other," he continued, "but I have never seen an Anlight with black wings crying on the pier, so I wanted to make sure you were okay." Annabel couldn’t say anything to him as she knew she was not okay. "My name’s Robin," he introduced himself. "I come here sometimes when I feel sad too. I very well know this..." "Why would you feel sad?" Annabel whispered, not looking at him. "Isn’t this a paradise here?" "It is what you make it to be," he replied. "But I have my sad days too...I lost my son before we Anlights came to the New Land and I didn’t know what happened to him. He just disappeared right before we had to leave the Old Land." Annabel opened her eyes and her heart jumped as she turned to look at the Anlight who was talking to her. He was tall, wearing dark pants and a brown shirt, holding his fishing pole in his right hand. Annabel looked at him for a moment and her eyes widened when the moon appeared from behind scudding clouds and she saw his face in its light. He looked so familiar she was...she knew the reason for his son's disappearance. She turned away from him hiding her emotions. "What was his name?" she asked quietly, predicting the answer. "Markus!" he said. "I called him Mark. He looked a lot like me." Annabel closed her eyes and took a deep breath, knowing exactly what had happened to him. She bit her bottom lip, trying to hold tears from washing out of her eyes. "He was about your age..." the fisherman continued, happily talking about his son, "Very brave young Anlight. Sometimes even too brave for his own good." Annabel stood quietly, trying to calm down. She took another deep breath. She knew his son was that brave Anlight who had been doing most of the talking when they were first captured by Varkins. "I know what happened to him," she whispered, wondering if she should even tell him the truth. Her voice began to shake. "Oh, you do?" The fisherman sounded curious—after all, how she could possibly know? "I was there too...I was with him...and others..." Annabel spoke while catching her breath, trying her best to talk normally without giving in to her emotions. "Nobody lived..." she finished as more tears quietly ran down her face. "Nobody?" he questioned, needing to be sure. "Only me..." She finally could not take it anymore and burst into tears, sniffing and catching her breath. The fisherman sighed and put his head down, in sadness for his son—even though he had already accepted his disappearance and possible death. He came close to Annabel. "I knew one day I would know the truth.” He spoke calmly, and with sorrow. “Thank you for coming here tonight." "I am sorry about your loss," Annabel sobbed harder with every word said. "He and others were in a lot of pain...and those who died…were the lucky ones. They are in peace now and will not feel any pain again." The fisherman took a step closer and put his hand on her shoulder. He smiled slightly. "Sometimes it’s hard to accept what happens to us. Sometimes the reality seems too much for us to take. But we would not appreciate the good if we did not know the bad. We are writers of our own lives, and we decide when to close a chapter, and when to start the new one." Annabel wiped cold tears from her cheeks as she looked at him. "Cheer up," he continued. "You’re the lucky one! You can continue writing your life." He paused for a moment. "And I need to get back to my wife...fish for dinner!" He laughed, picking up a small bucket full of fresh catch. He walked slowly back along the empty pier, disappearing in the darkness. Annabel stood on the pier for a while longer, thinking about what he had said. She calmed down, as the wind picked up and she began to get cold. She returned to the car and drove back to her house. When she pulled up, nobody seemed to be there. She looked around as she walked to the porch door, hoping nobody was waiting for her. Annabel entered her house and locked the door behind her. She was just going to call her cousin about her visit when, again, someone knocked on the porch door. Annabel recalled what had happened before, and was not in the mood to continue talking about her own or Dexter's relations. She crossed to the door and moved the blinds to see who was knocking. However, as soon as she saw it was Dexter outside, she slid the door open. Content Warning: contains explicit language, sex scenes, and some violence ~Excerpt~ Hadeon opens the door and enters the room. Ariana smiles, barely able to meet his gaze. He wears black sweatpants, his upper half bare. The tattoos and his rock-hard body pilfer her attention. He looks like he’s been carved from the hardest, sexiest piece of granite available. He sits beside her on the bed, and she’s mesmerized as he stares into her eyes. He takes a ribbon of her wet hair between his thumb and forefinger and slides down the length of it until his hand falls away. Saying nothing, his fingers float to her face and flutter down her cheek. Her need throbs as his thumb rubs along her bottom lip. Ariana’s breaths grow heavy. This simple gesture of affection makes her body warm and melt like ice in a fire. “I’m sorry,” he says, his voice hoarse and gentle. “Why? I’m the one who went out searching for trouble.” His face nears; he slants his mouth over Ariana’s and slides his tongue between her lips. She sighs, both pleasure and angst, for she knows he will not allow this to advance any further. His hands cup her cheeks as his kiss grows deeper. Then he pulls away, and she is bereft. His forehead rests against hers, breaths heavy. “I know why you did what you did. Why you do what you always do. I understand how it feels. The lust you feel, so intense it burns a path through your skull if you don’t feed it. I know how it feels to be swept up in a moment of passion, yearning to satiate the desire that grows hot like a fire in your belly.” She backs away a fraction. Never before has someone been able to describe these emotions, sensations, and desires. “How?” she whispers, edging toward his lips with her own until they touch, warm and alive. His tongue finds hers again and she moans. His tenderness is unfurling her like a ripe bud. His lips fall to her neck, then slide up her jaw, breath and fire burning along her flesh. His hot mouth tantalizes her ear. “It’s a part of you, Ariana. It makes you who you are, and who I am.” Again she rocks away and looks into his eyes, which are now a lighter brown than they have ever been. His face is so alluring she could cry. She wants to speak great floods of words, but she can’t, trapped between bemusement, curiosity, and the most brilliant yearning she has ever experienced. Buy Links: Beachwalk Press

~Excerpt~
“It would be better if you didn’t allow married men into the club.” Ian shrugged. “I don’t encourage it, but they are paying customers.” “Assholes are what they are.” She finished her beverage. “Need another? On the house after dealing with an asshole.” She handed him her glass. “I suppose.” “I’ll be right back.” Jamie ran her hands through the top of her hair. Her dress was riding up slightly, and as she tugged it back into place, a shiver swept down her spine. She didn’t even have to turn around to know who stood just inches from her. A hand met her waist. “You know what this dress does to me.” She pulled away from him and turned to meet his gaze. “Chandler. How nice to see you.” “It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?” He cocked an eyebrow. Ian returned and handed her another Appletini. “I need to handle something. We’ll talk again soon, Jamie.” She nodded then glanced back at Chandler. His hair was dark, almost black. He’d been coloring it, she could tell, because she couldn’t find a hint of gray. And at forty-eight, she’d expect to see some around the ears, at least. “How’ve you been?” he asked. Like he cared. She’d been his toy, that was it. She’d known it when she got involved with him; knew it would go nowhere. He’d been honest, but she’d still fallen for him. Coming here tonight had been a mistake. You didn’t just fall out of love with someone in two weeks. Chandler reached out and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Please, don’t.” She couldn’t handle him touching her. “I’ve missed you,” he whispered. She shook her head and stepped back, needing space. “Don’t.” “Come on, Jamie. Spend some time with me like you used to.” Taking a deep breath, she glared at him. “I’m not a toy.” Chandler smirked. “You sure are dressed like one.” Is my mouth open? She sure-as-hell felt like her chin was sitting on the floor. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.” Chandler stepped toward her, but she put her hand out again. “Don’t come anywhere near me.” Jamie quickly spun around and marched away, bumping right into someone. Not even caring to apologize, she kept walking. Her vision was on the entrance to this place and exiting it as quickly as she could. “Leaving so soon?” the bouncer asked. “Yeah, nothing but creeps here tonight.” The cool air soothed her over-heated body as she hurried to her car.

Midnight Kiss - Excerpts
“Where is your father?” Half whisper, half growl, his voice startled her. “Get him here! I need him here, now!” “What is it? Are you all right? Is there something I—” “Come no closer.” Arabella gasped at the sight of him. He was so pale! In the dimness, his flesh seemed almost translucent. Lean features were drawn into taut relief, all highlight and hollow, as if ravaged by a wasting sickness. Wet hair clung sleekly to the contour of his skull. Only his eyes burned, a hot, luminescent gold. A trick of the light, surely, for in that moment, she could have sworn they blazed like coals beneath the dark slash of his brows. Then he turned his head away, denying her the sight of his misery. “Leave me. Please. I will be fine if you leave me.” He wouldn’t be fine. She could tell by watching his agitation. Something was dreadfully wrong and he’d come to her father for help. But Stuart Howland was not at home. “Please,” she cried out softly. “Please tell me what I can do for you.” For a moment there was silence. Then, the slow, hissing draw of his breath. And he came about to face her. They were quite close. He had no difficulty reaching out to catch her by the upper arms. His long fingers bit into tender flesh, the pressure hurtful. What kind of illness left such strength in a man’s hands, she wondered somewhat frantically, but she couldn’t move. She couldn’t complain. For he was staring down into her eyes and suddenly nothing else existed beyond the pull of his unblinking gaze. An odd lethargy spread through her as she heard him speak, his tone quiet and somehow soothing. It seemed to melt her very bones. “What can you do for me?” he repeated, as if considering the question. His arms bent until she was compelled forward, until she could feel the force of his rapid breath against her upturned face. There was no warmth to it. Nor was there any sign of weakness or distress in him. Power . . . she sensed power. It engulfed her, swallowing her whole. “Arabella.”

EXCERPT And then her gaze settled far back in the shadows, upon the figure of a man in stark silhouette. She saw him jerk as if with some shock of recognition, then he took one gliding step forward to the edge of lamplight. Reflection played an eerie game upon his face, highlighting skin so fair it seemed translucent and hollows so sharp and deep they were like caverns; a face so startling, so unnaturally beautiful she came close to stumbling in her study. Beneath an arch of black brows, eyes of an icy, luminous blue entranced her. And even as she jerked her head away, she caught the impression of his smile; serene and sinister all at once. Nicole had never seen the Devil, but on this night, she was sure he walked abroad. And she was just as certain that he followed safely back amongst the shadows. She could feel him, an essence so powerful, it frightened her. But the moment they crossed the bridge, the sensations faded and she knew he was gone. But the fear lingered, lending a quickness to her heartbeats and an anxious panic to her mind.

Midnight Surrender - Excerpts
EXCERPT “You are wrong, Cassie,” came his soft drawl, as soothing and sensuous as a physical caress along the heart strings. “What binds us is stronger than vows and deeper than eternity.” She trembled. Her gaze danced nervously away. “You’re speaking in riddles.” “No, in truths. Look at me, Cassie.” She couldn’t, suddenly afraid—of what he might say, of what he might see in her unguarded gaze. “Look at me.” A command as hard to resist as a physical force. She turned toward him, painfully aware of her flushed cheeks, but he didn’t notice them. He was fixed upon her eyes. His drew her in with a mesmerizing power, relaxing her denying tension, calming her anxious fears. Looking into his eyes was like falling into her soul. “We are one, Cassie. You can feel that, can’t you? You are mine now. Can you deny it?” She sucked in a fragile breath and whispered, “No.” Because she could feel it even if she couldn’t explain it. “I-I don’t understand.” “You don’t have to understand. You only have to believe.” The swirl of his power engulfed her senses, teasing her with strange prickles of awareness—of him as a man, of him as more than just a man. That was where confusion arose. What else was he? What could give him that kind of control over her sensibilities? Because she lived a life of asking questions and seeking answers, it went against her grain to blindly accept what was before her. Even when she was under a smothering pressure to do just that. She blinked hard and struggled against his spell. “W-what are you doing to me?” she demanded with a gathering sense of self. With it came the scary realization that the emotional chords she was reacting to were being played outside her mind. “Is it some sort of hypnotism?” He smiled blandly and continued to seduce her with his brilliant gaze. “No cheap magician’s trick, I assure you.” “Stop.” That was said with a wavering certainty, so she took a deep breath and tried again with more authority. “Stop it!” “But I am only giving you what you want. Why are you protesting?” Feeling her will weakening, frantically, she sought an argument. “It’s not what I want!” “No?” That word was edged with subtle mockery and he began to lean toward her. She meant to draw back, to maintain the distance, but was unable to move. “I don’t want to be owned by a man. I want to be loved by him.” Even as she made that claim, her breatt slowed into long languid pulls and her eyelids sank down with a luxurious expectation. And when his mouth touched to hers, reason failed her. “You wanted me, now you have me. The degree of possession should not concern you.” But it did. That last flare of independence flickered. Arguments of the will couldn’t hold against barriers heart and mind had already conceded. Cassie closed her eyes and opened her soul, letting the essence of him overtake her, wondering dreamily why she’d objected at all.

His smile grew even wider. “You’re cute.” He motioned toward his lips with a finger. “And you have whipped cream on the corner of your mouth.” Smooth, Alexa. Real smooth. The waffles were so good, and I was so engrossed in the man sitting next to me, I hadn’t even noticed I’d been shoveling food into my mouth like a caveman. When I looked down, I realized half my waffle was already gone. I dropped the fork into my box, scrambling for my napkin. “Oh my god. You have to think I’m the least attractive girl ever.” Liam caught my wrist, his strength pinning my arm down on the table. “Not at all.” He shifted his seat closer to mine, and they clanked together. “That was actually the exact opposite of what I was thinking.” Too in awe of the situation to react, I sat completely still as Liam leaned in and pressed his lips against the corner of my mouth. His tongue poked out and cleaned up the whipped cream with one slow and sexy lick. My insides clenched, and my hands drew into fists. Liam Walker kissed me. About the Author:

I have Gina here today to share her take on all this and give you a sneak peek at her release--The Wicked Bargain! Take it away, Gina...Twisting the rules… As a published author, one of the questions I get asked is how do I come up with story ideas? Every author has different methods and honestly, every story came from a different set of circumstances. Mostly they aren’t planned out but hit us like a freight train in the middle of another story or in a conversation or driving or just about anywhere. For The Wicked Bargain, I’d been reading several Regency novels with the heroine as a courtesan. The stories of course are of redemption of these women – most in a circumstance that placed them as courtesans. They meet the hero, stay true to him (the old HQ rules in place) and he saves her from a life as a soiled dove. Good stories. But… What if the high-price courtesan was male? I always have wondered about the strange set of rules in the ton – men could take courtesans or mistresses and the wife served as the mother to his legitimate heir, maybe two, and gladly (sometimes) welcomed another woman servicing the man she’d married. But about these wives? Women who served their purpose, taken care of for the rest of their lives by name and title of the husband but what about the loneliness, the desires that remained unfulfilled? Research indicates a small amount (known at least) of ladies who took matters into their own hands and took lovers. And if they did, why not paid for a male courtesan? Our heroine, Arabella Covington, spent her youth following her father, a country physician, to his visits and helped him treat his patients. She learned medicine through this, like an apprentice. With this knowledge, she wants to be able to help the sick and wounded but she can’t. At this time period, early 1800s, women were only allowed to be midwives and nothing more. Arabella, coming to London, quickly found her training meant nothing. Or did it? Medicine at this time was an evolving science. In the mid 17th century, medicine was lumped with alchemy. Science had yet to emerge as fact over magic strangely enough. To be taught cures and how to treat patients, many also learned incantations and the latest way to turn wood into gold. As time turned, medicine pulled out of the dark ages and into a science, however limited the knowledge base was in the field. Many methods were lost during the Dark Ages when western civilization backtracked from what had been learned during the Ancient times, through the Romans and Egyptians. But during the late 18th century, science extracted itself from the idea of prayer for a cure to something more viable. Men pursued this career, not women. Women remained steadfast as midwives, knowing the workings of a woman’s reproductive cycle. Yet does that mean women couldn’t handle medical knowledge to treat men and women? No, wives were often the healer of the family. The trend that continued to the Victorian era was that the injured or sick did better if they stayed at home and were tended in a loving atmosphere. In other words, nursed by their mother or wife. Wives handled everything from fevers to illness to wounds from farming, hunting, war and even everyday living. Yet, it was truly believed that women could not handle severe wounds or illnesses. Really? I think not… This is the world Arabella must deal with. Her training goes further than a midwife, able to treat men as well as women and children. No doubt her frustration is palatable. To find Ethan’s place and the ability to help Mary must have made her thrilled to be able to help. Little did she know, the man who broke societal rules to hire her medical services for his ladies and would himself desperately need her aid, would show her a world she didn’t know. Nor did she realize her greatest talent would be in his redemption. Thus was the birth of The Wicked Bargain: Haunted by a past as a sex slave, nobleman Ethan Warth returns to England as a male courtesan for rich matrons and runs a brothel for wealthy lords. Arabella Covington appears on his door, trained in the medical arts but unable to practice because of her gender. He hires her to care for his ladies but her inquisitive nature and beauty make him desire to teach her the world of seduction. Ethan, however, never counted on falling in love… Excerpt – Arabella stood in her chambers, her thoughts a tumble of emotions, none of them comfortable. Her biggest one was fear. Had Jeremy made it to London? What if he lurked outside, waiting for her? Another intruding thought was this house. Just what went on beyond those chamber doors? One thing was certain. Her cousin, the Marquis, was not like any other man she knew. There appeared to be several women living here but she couldn’t tell if it was a boarding house. Plus last night, she heard from Ethan’s own mouth that he was in bed with another man’s wife and that was more than she could take. She wanted to run from the house but go where? Her lack of funds would not take her far and she could never return home. The combination of confusion, fear and panic had her pacing around the room, her mind on the scene from last night and of the marquis being in here but few minutes ago, all congenial and handsome. His refusal to let her stay followed by a reluctant change of heart made her more irritated, restlessness and anxious. If she didn’t do something, she might go insane. She swung the door open and marched quickly down the hall to Mary’s room. Knocking at the door, Arabella heard Mary’s response and opened the door. Mary spun in her bronze evening gown. “What do you think?” the girl asked, a whimsical smile on her face. The dress was stunning. Its underskirt of a copper colored watered silk was the perfect match to a diaphanous gold overskirt trimmed with decorated braiding at the neckline and capped sleeves. “It’s beautiful.” Arabella stood in awe. The girl looked so young and full of life. The bulge of her condition only slightly visible when she ran her hand over her belly. Nothing of last night’s trauma showed. She stopped and gave a slight curtsy. “Thank you,” she said. “Robert will love it!” “Robert?” “Yes.” She looked at Arabella quizzically. “Oh, yes, well, Robert is my....” She ran her hand over the skirted bulge. “Ah, your husband, or soon to be.” A peel of laughter came as she shook her head. Arabella frowned. She may be from the country, but children born out of wedlock anywhere were bastards, a permanent stain. Surely, the Marquis would demand this Robert make her his wife. “But he will be, right?” Mary’s eyes slanted, crinkling with amusement. “You’re new. Please forgive me.” “What does that have to do with your condition?” Mary fidgeted with her overskirt, avoiding her gaze. “Mary,” she asked quietly. “Why won’t you answer me?” Fear crept into her voice before she could prevent it. “They didn’t tell you?” Mary broke into a giggle. “I fail to see the humor in this,” Arabella stated flatly. She wanted answers. The vision of the naked Marquis on the bed once more came to mind. Drat, why did it always pop up like that? Mary controlled her giggles as she walked to her dresser and pulled out her jewelry box. Glancing at Arabella, she opened the box and grabbed a pair of earbobs. “I laughed too at first.” She pushed the wire through her earlobe. “To be trained by Ethan and make the sort of blunt seemed too good to be true, especially for a girl like me. But Ethan claimed he saw in me a spark that’d light his nabob friends on fire.” She sighed, connecting the second earbob closure till both glass orbs hung from her ears. Arabella furrowed her brows. Blunt and nabobs she understood but she had yet to see what work was involved. Only thing she did know was the young woman in front of her, probably barely old enough to know better, at eighteen or nineteen, was increasing, unmarried and pleased to dress for an evening out with the guilty party. This was what London did to a woman? Made her forget her upbringing? Even the country folk knew that a woman’s virtue was to remain until marriage. There were few ways for women to earn money but none brought any riches. Except one and it was called prostitution, a courtesan to be exact. One who serviced the nobility. Arabella’s mind stumbled over the thought. Was she in a brothel? What would the Marquis be doing, living in a place of ill-repute? Why would her aunt send her here? Granted, Aunt Edith told her to come here as a last resort, but she couldn’t believe her aunt wanted her to sell her body. Heavens, that was what her cousin wanted her to do and why she fled him. Arabella shuddered, fear coiling inside her. The snap of a necklace closure grabbed Arabella’s attention back to the girl. Mary was still talking. “He will train you to be the best but you’ll never have him. He remains…,” Mary paused. “Alone. So don’t be disappointed. All of us have been there.” Arabella frowned. The girl lost her. She opened her mouth to ask what training when the girl grabbed her hand. “Come on! We’ll be late and Ethan hates when you’re late!” Buylinks: Amazon: http://amzn.to/1j6eAn3 Nook: http://bit.ly/1L1O4CW iBook: http://apple.co/1KVgaBU Kobo: http://bit.ly/1Q0XDFt Author bio - Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Gina Danna has spent the better part of her life reading. A lot of the written material was in reference to the queen, Ellora ValKhazar. Apparently, she was the one suspected of passing down her genetic differences to her descendants. Beginning with her sons Dorian and the infamous, Lykos. In reality, I was only reading about Ellora because I was trying not to turn to the page where my mother’s painted portrait supposedly was. After Bray shared one of the many memories he had of Mom, I was more than a little hesitant. Seeing it would confirm what I already suspected. Bray was being truthful. Mom was his cousin, granddaughter of the queen herself. Denying our bloodline seemed pointless. Chances that Mom kept her identity secret along with mine in order to protect me—well, that was something a concerned, caring mother would do for a child. Did she leave to protect me? Or was I trying to cover the sun with one finger? Deep down I wanted to believe her departure had everything to do with this war brewing and her need to protect her only child, but doubts filled my head with all kinds of different scenarios and what if’s. Alone, I could finally release some of the pent up anger and frustration I’d been feeling for a while now. My mother? An immortal descendant of a royal werewolf family? Of all the scenarios I’d imagined, this had honestly never crossed my mind as being the reason why she abandoned me.

This was supposed to be a no-strings-attached win-win for both Devi and Omar, but when they cross the line between friendship and...well, something more, Devi realizes she's made a huge mistake that just might cost her both job and friend - falling for her fiancé.
A FRIENDLY ENGAGEMENT EXCERPT
EXCERPT “You’re game for anything, right?” Devi compressed her lips and studied Omar through a narrow gaze, taking in the way his overly bright eyes concentrated on her face as if memorizing every pore. Her gaze traveled south to the non-existent rise and fall of his chest and how he pushed his suit jacket aside as he placed his hands low on his hips. He’d stopped breathing while he waited for her reply. That made her more nervous than anything. “Normally I am game for anything, but considering the man asking the question, I’m a little nervous.” She licked her lips. Omar shook his head, swallowing her hands in the warmth of his. “No. This is a great idea. I can’t believe I didn’t see it before.” “I’ll hold back on saying I’m glad I could help until I know what you’ve got pinging around your brain.” She tried to pull free of his grip, but he only grasped her fingers tighter. Her inner voice told her whatever plan he’d cooked up included her and she wouldn’t be thrilled with the role. “Bartow wants a family-first firm. He wants a planner who is married, blah, blah blah.” He dismissed his unfinished words with the thrust of his chin. Devi nodded, her mouth going dry. Was he planning to hire a wife, or about to propose? “I might not be married, but what if I were engaged?” She didn’t want to jump to conclusions about the proposal so she pasted on a tight smile. “Do you have a serious girlfriend hidden away I don’t know about?” The thought unsettled her, but she pushed aside the heaviness in her gut. Omar and relationships mixed like fire and ice. Not that women didn’t find him attractive and vice versa, but his true love would always be work. Most sane women wanted something more than a workaholic commitment-phobe. He shook his head a bit too vigorously. “No. No.” His grip tightened, and she flexed her fingers so he’d loosen his hold. “Hear me out before you shoot me down.” “I’m more curious than ever.” Again, she threw sand over that niggling feeling in her belly. She never jumped to conclusions. Living by the seat of your pants didn’t allow it, but… Why start now? She rolled her shoulders in an effort to relax. Omar pulled her off to the side and out of the crowd moving past them on the sidewalk. His hands shook with excitement, and he swallowed hard before clearing his throat. Always calm and collected, his buildup unsettled Devi, and she tugged one hand from his grip and pressed it against the gurgle growing in her stomach. “How about we announce our engagement? I could pull in some favors and have it in the press Monday morning. That’d still give Bartow enough time to invite us to the meet and greet. And—” “Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Devi’s stomach did a nosedive, and she yanked her other hand from his death grip and stepped back. She twisted one of the bangle bracelets on her wrist. “Our engagement? First off, I didn’t even know we were dating. And second, I am not going to help you get ahead by lying.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Lilli,” he said. “Do you have a last name?” “I do.” She was too busy gazing into his eyes that he thought maybe she forgot to finish answering. Jack smiled and cleared his throat when he realized she was staring at him longer than necessary. “Oh, it’s Daniels.” “What do you do besides work here, Lilli Daniels?” “I work at the bookstore over at the community college,” she said. “I’m hoping to save enough money to take a few classes there in the fall.” “It’s only January,” Jack said. “Why wait so long?” “Classes are expensive.” She nervously fidgeted with the cocktail napkin sitting on the table. “So, what do you do?” “I’m an attorney. I have my own practice in the city.” “Oh, that sounds interesting. I’d like to study law someday, too.” “A pretty ambitious goal.” He teased. “How old are you?” “Twenty-two.” Well, at least she's legal. For a girl working in a strip club trying to save money for school, she seemed awfully naïve. He briefly wondered if it was an act to get men to feel sorry for her. Maybe she knew exactly how to get a bigger tip out of her customers. “Getting a bit of a late start with school, aren’t you?” Jack asked. “My son is about your age and he's in medical school.” “My father’s not an attorney.” When she ran her fingers through her hair, Jack immediately recognized she was uncomfortable when she mentioned her father. The lawyer in him needed to investigate a little further. “What does your father do?” “Are you ready to order?” she said. “I should be getting back to work.” “Not just yet.” He wondered why she changed the subject so quickly. “I’m curious why a girl like you is in a place like this.” “Me too.” She looked around the dark room. “I fell on some hard times and I’m just trying to get my life back together. It’s honest work.” “What kind of hard times?” He was trying not to interrogate her, but he wanted to know more about her. “I can tell you’re a lawyer.” Her full pink lips curved into a smile. Jackson wondered what it would feel like to have her mouth against his. She was probably soft and warm. “It’s in my nature to ask questions.” He wanted to know more about this beauty. “Do you always get your answers?” “I always get everything I want.” He let his eyes wander down her flawless body. He shouldn't have been entertaining any possibilities at all, but then again, when did he ever let anything stop him from getting what he wanted? Jack reached into his pocket, pulled out his business card, and handed it to her. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. “I have to get back to the office now, but I’ve rather enjoyed your company. If Pat gives you a hard time, please give me a call. I’ll set him straight.” He should leave her alone. He wasn't interested in getting involved with a girl in her situation, but he wasn’t ready to walk away. Not yet. She glanced down at the card. “I went to high school with a Cameron Avis.” “Did you date?” That would be far too amusing. “Oh, God no.” She laughed as she stared at his card. “He was a year older than me, popular, and would never give a girl like me a second glance. I was from the wrong side of the tracks.” She rolled her eyes. “But you can probably already see that.” “Hmm.” Jack had a clearer picture of who Lilli was. “I was shy and kept to myself,” she continued. “He was gorgeous, smart, and came from money. Definitely not my type.” “Really?” Jack grinned as he got up from the table. “It seems to me I’ll have to have a talk with my son about not recognizing a good thing when he sees it.” “Oh.” He saw the look of horror cross her face as he threw a twenty down on the table and headed for the exit. “Take care, Lilli Daniels.” ~About the Author~ Ella Jade has been writing for as long as she can remember. ~Excerpt~
A lethal injection looms in my future. During the first few months, public opinion was evenly divided: fifty percent believed I murdered my husband and daughter, fifty percent thought I had nothing to do with their disappearance. But of course, that was before the media began their relentless invasion into my story and my past. I broke a boy’s ribs with a baseball bat when I was a high school student in Japan. We had been at a party, and he had tried to rape me, or at the very least put his hands where they did not belong. I defended myself. No charges have ever been filed. Then the media learned about Carl, and the affair. Eventually, they found out about the man I was seeing back in my early twenties when I was living with my mother and step-father in China. I was the last person to see him alive. He disappeared. By the time he was legally declared dead, I was safely back in the United States. Public opinion turned. I was guilty. What had been a regional story spread like wildfire throughout America. Nightly media feeds would focus on the continuing investigation and the evidence mounting — against me of course. Then came the leak of the mental health expert’s findings. Of course, this only added to the frenzy. Hired by the prosecutors — without examining me in person — he concluded I had the capacity to shield myself from normal feelings. So I could kill someone, and live with it. It was just a matter of time before they finally arrested me. I’ve been in this cell for the past six months, getting out only for an occasional visit with my lawyer in the interview room, to make a few brief appearances in court, and for my daily hour alone in the exercise yard. No one wants another inmate to kill me before the trial. I sit on a narrow bed with a thin, smelly mattress in a ten-square-foot cell, with a camera trained on me from outside the steel bars twenty-four hours a day. When I’m in the courthouse, the guards let me put on business attire; otherwise, I wear orange jumpsuits. I tell the guards they’re tight around my hips. They joke that the custom-fitted jumpsuits will be delivered shortly. I’m guessing I should feel depressed or anxious or just plain terrified. Mostly, I just feel numb. It’s so hard sometimes to stay strong and be optimistic. I close my eyes and see my daughter’s face on the day when she and I were last together. Still a toddler, she was learning to wobble about the house, laughing, her eyes blue and bright, smiling, always smiling at me. Her face haunts me in my dreams. Fortunately, I enjoy reading, because there’s not much else to do. Although I never had much interest in science before this all began, nowadays I’m drawn to articles about biology and physics and astronomy. In a magazine recently, I read how human beings can never actually perceive the real world. Instead, the real world enters our senses and is translated by our brains in ways evolution dictated would be best for our survival. The reality that we believe exists is actually just a simulation created by our own minds. We can never comprehend the true nature of the universe, because our brains get in the way. I think about that now, sitting in my prison cell, awaiting trial. I wonder if, somehow, some way, none of this is real. I sometimes wish that what my mind perceives as reality is completely wrong, and that some of the things I have done or seen never happened at all.
