Blurb:

All Marisol Lewis had ever wanted was a family, but her ex-husband back on Earth made sure that would never happen while they were together. Now? After waking up on an alien planet, she has a plan and she’s more determined than ever to see it through on her own. When the contract comes up that will give her exactly what she’s always dreamed of, she’s eager to sign on the dotted line and begin the journey to her new home planet of Dolovia. But when things go horribly wrong, she ends up surrounded by mad doctors and Frankenstein space pirates. Luca and Baelion are dragon shifters with a troubled past, shunned by their own people, they now work for the Coalition Council taking rescue jobs that no one else can do. They manage to find Marisol—but their rescue plans take a wrong turn and they all end up stranded on a dangerous quarantined planet. Mari finds out the hard way that life often gets in the way of best-laid plans…and dragon shifters most definitely do get in the way of hers. Good thing for her that dragons are naturally quite stubborn once they decide they want something—and they’ve decided she’s theirs.

Story Excerpt:

Mari stared at the sheer beauty of the male in front of her. His chest was a sculpture of rippling golden muscles. Fine beads of sweat made their way down his toned stomach, drawing her gaze ever lower. She watched as his hips swayed back and forth to the seductive music, his low, loose pants barely clinging to his lean body. She wasn’t sure if she’d even seen a more beautiful man before; it had certainly been long enough since she’d had her hands on any man at all. The sighs of the woman next to her finally broke the trance of his delectable gyrations and allowed her to turn her eyes away. No point in torturing herself any further with things that she couldn’t have. “God, Mari, how can you even look away from a sight that divine?” Devyn fanned herself with both hands. “I mean, I love Benic like a brother, but when that boy dances, even I can’t keep my thoughts platonic.” “Well, I’m almost old enough to be his mother, so I shouldn’t be gawking at him at all,” Marisol answered as she stood up from the stone bench where they’d been watching the dance performance. The gardens of the Courtesan Guild building were created for showcasing and practicing all sorts of exotic performance arts, and most of those who attended the classes or worked in the building loved to enjoy the shows. “You’re leaving right in the middle of his routine?” Devyn asked, looking back at her as if she were crazy. “I’ve got an appointment with the Guild Matron in twenty minutes. Sally says she’s found the perfect contract for me.” “Oh,” Devyn answered with a frown. “This soon? I thought it would take longer, that we’d have at least until I’m done with classes before you shipped off to planets unknown.” Mari reached over and gave her friend a tight hug. For some reason, little Devyn’s perky, outrageous personality had meshed perfectly with her own—surprisingly, since she’d been told on more than one occasion that she was too serious, too much of a control freak. So the tiny tornado of happiness had become her best friend here, and if she was sent off world, she would miss her something fierce. “Don’t worry, Devyn. It might not even be one that I want,” Mari said with a shrug. “No point in worrying over nothing. I’ll see you after.” As Marisol walked back through the education center and into the Courtesan admin wing, she had to admire the sensuous beauty of the building. If she had been ten years younger and perhaps a little bit braver, she would have loved to apply to the Courtesan Guild. It sounded so glamorous and fascinating, and Sally certainly couldn’t look any happier than she was in her new role as Guild Matron. Of course, it didn’t hurt that it was a role that just happened to come with a smoking-hot husband, Guild Master Arkenon Quinn. A more devastating alpha male Mari had never met, and she couldn’t help but be a little jealous of her friend. She walked into Sally’s new office and was not surprised to see the intimidating Kalista Dax standing at the secretary’s desk, going over some paperwork. When the former Tokka assassin turned her unsettling solid blue eyes toward Mari, it was all she could do not to book it back out the damned door. Kali had always been very nice to the rest of the rescued Earthers and actively went out of her way to make friends, but the rumors of the kind of violence she was capable of left Mari just a bit freaked out. “Hello, Marisol. Are you here for your appointment with the Guild Matron?” Kali asked, an almost smile trying to form on her beautiful, pale white face. Mari knew that Kali liked to spend so much time with the Earth females because they were so expressive emotionally. She was only half Tokka and had been forced to suppress her physical expressions at an early age. Since Kali had defected from a society where it was unacceptable to show emotions of any kind, she was trying to learn by observing them, and sometimes the results could be…unsettling. “Yes, Sally said that she may have found a placement for me,” Mari answered, trying to maintain eye contact with the much taller woman. “Mari, come on in!” Sally bellowed from her desk, which made both Mari and Kali smile at how outrageous their new Guild Matron could be. Sally was up to her elbows in material swatches when Marisol sat down in front of the large desk. The office was beautiful, with an incredible view of the mountains through the floor-to-ceiling windows on one side. The furniture was all made in a black wood that looked exotic and expensive. But then again, Sally’s new position as Guild Matron was one of the most important on the entire planet of Sirus. It was just strange because Sally really didn’t seem to care about the prestige at all. She had really grown into herself since that day they had all walked out of their rooms for the first time and realized they were now on an alien planet, but she was still just Sally to the rest of her friends. “Argh, I’m supposed to decide on material for new dresses for the council meetings, and I seriously couldn’t care less. I wonder if I can hire someone to do all of this clothing crap for me?” the Guild Matron said, shoving the material to the other side of the desk with a look of disgust. “So how are you, Mari? How are the classes going?” “Good, Sal. I’m almost done with the EMT equivalent, so I’m sure that will be handy to have on top of my nursing experience. You said you had a possible match for me for placement?” She squirmed in her chair, trying not to look too excited.

Adult Excerpt:

“You’re so wet for us already,” the low sexy timbre of Luca’s voice only made her want him more. “I need to taste you.” “Later, Luca. I need you right now.” She moaned as Baelion took one of her aching nipples deep into his mouth. “I can’t wait. Please.” She boldly moved her legs farther apart, planting her feet flat on the mats. It was an unmistakable invitation—one Luca didn’t disappoint her on. He quickly rid himself of his shorts and then moved between her thighs, rubbing the swollen, thick head of his cock along her wet folds. “Luca, stop teasing me.” His only answer was a low growl as he slowly pushed his length inside of her, his eyes locked on hers. It was extremely intense. His gaze never left hers as he filled her up. “Watching you take him is so fucking hot, Mari.” Bae’s voice from beside her snagged her attention. His own blue eyes were locked to where their bodies joined. He ran one finger down her stomach until it lightly made a slow path around her swollen clit, causing her to moan and tighten around the hard shaft buried deep within her. “She’s so warm and wet, Bae. Feel for yourself.” Luca grabbed Baelion’s hand and guided it lower to where the root of him met her body. Mari’s hips bucked up when Bae continued to rub a trail along her folds and then back up to her clit. Meanwhile Luca set a leisurely pace, thrusting in slowly and then retreating. She could feel the pressure building inside of her, and she sighed when Baelionmoved to capture her lips in a slow kiss. The two of them continued their sensual torment, never letting her set the pace or tempt them to lose control. Bae had her arms gently pinned above her head with one hand. The thrill of being completely under their control seemed to electrify all of her senses. They were true to their word, completely tender in their care for her—but there was an intensity to their actions that was different than before. They were loving her so intently that it was her undoing. “Oh God.” She whimpered into his mouth as Luca’s firm but steady pace lit her up until she was just on the cusp of orgasm. “Please, I need to come.” “Come for us, little one,” Bae murmured as he finally pinched down on her swollen button, causing her to spasm all around Luca’s shaft. “Yeeeessss.” She moaned as she came. All of the tension in her body finally broke and swept her away in a warm rush of pleasure. Luca pushed deep one last time before he joined her, groaning her name. Baelion still slowly stroked her as she came down from the high, Luca still buried deep inside of her. There was certainly something to be said for slow and steady. It was a different type of pleasure than the passionate coupling from their previous encounter, but no less impactful. It was more intimate. There was more tenderness in their touch, and it melted her. “How are you feeling, Mari?” Luca leaned forward to slowly sip at her lips. She opened her eyes when he stopped, only to see that he had moved to kiss Baelion as well. “Much more relaxed,” she murmured, hypnotized at the sight of their lips and tongues moving together. Her satiated libido suddenly roared to life once again as Luca withdrew his spent shaft from her and settled himself this time behind Baelion. “And what shall we do with you, love?” Luca reached over the other man’s hip, moving lower until he grasped Bae’s turgid length and stroked it slowly. “Let us take care of you now.” “I don’t want to make Mari sore.” Bae’s voice was quiet and strained with desire as she joined her hand with Luca’s on the other man’s cock. “I’m fine, Bae,” she whispered, leaning in to lick at his neck. “I promise.” “Move closer and give me your leg, Marisol.” Luca released Bae’s cock and pulled her thigh up to rest over both of their hips, opening her up to them. She moaned when the wet tip of Baelion’s cock rubbed up against her sensitive clit, loving how hard he was for them. When he slowly slid into her, they both let out a long breath. He was slightly thicker than Luca but felt oh so good as he stretched her. “Neither of you move.” Luca’s voice was thick with desire once again as he reached for the remainder of the julla leaves and collected the thick gel on his fingers before returning to his position behind his mate. Baelion tightened his arms around Mari’s waist as he groaned low in her ear, his hips bucking slightly against her. She had a pretty good idea what Luca had done, and when he was once again tight against Bae’s back, she leaned over and kissed him, moving her hips slowly, working the thick length inside of her. “Ahh, Goddess, this feels amazing.” Bae panted as Luca began to thrust into him and Mari continued to move along his shaft. “It’s too much. I can’t last long.” She had a feeling that was Luca’s intention as he bit down on Bae’s shoulder, making the other man cry out as his hips bucked furiously, taking her breath away every time he slammed against her swollen clit. Mari could feel the force of Luca’s thrusts as he took Bae’s ass. “Do you like being fucked by both of us at the same time, love?” Luca whispered into Bae’s ear, the dirty words only increasing her desire. “Yes, I love it,” was Bae’s breathless response, sweat beading at his temple and then slowly making its way down the side of his face. “Mari, come on his cock.” Luca locked eyes with her. “Make him come inside of you.” She nodded and bit her lip as she reached down between their straining bodies. Her fingers slipped in the wetness before finding purchase, and all it took was two passes over her clit before her orgasm hit. She tightened around Bae’s shaft, urging him to find his own release. “Mari!” he bellowed before sinking deep inside of her one last time. She could feel the tremors flow through him as he came hard, his peak, in turn, bringing Luca as well. His roar of completion rang out into the quiet night.

EXCERPT:
Twenty minutes later, Brigit came to a stop in front of Carter’s cabin and shut off the Jeep’s engine. “Here we are.”
He turned toward her. “Come in with me.”

Through the windshield, she eyed the moonlit cabin. A soft glow illuminated the curtains covering the windows from inside.

He trailed a finger down her arm, leaving a line of hot chills racing across her skin. “I’ll reheat our meal, or put it in the fridge, or make some coffee.”

“Sure.” She opened her door. “Coffee might be good.”

Carter joined her in front of the Jeep. Heat rolled off his tall, muscular frame, enveloping her as he walked with her to the cabin and onto the porch, stopping at the door. Who am I kidding? I don’t want coffee. I want him. Just being near him caused her body to react—her nipples tightened in anticipation of his touch, and her damp panties had rubbed in the most delicious way with each step they’d taken.

Keys appeared in his hand as if by magic, and he unlocked the door. He pushed it open, allowing her to enter first.

She paused just inside where the foyer opened onto the dining area and kitchen. Beyond that lay a nice-sized living room with a vaulted ceiling. And the hallway at the back probably led to a couple of bedrooms and bathrooms.

He strode past her to the kitchen, tucking their food into the refrigerator, then returned to stand in front of her. He moved closer, his broad chest inches from her breasts. His dark-brown stare sent her heart galloping.

“Brigit.” His deep jagged voice spoke of desire and lust and intent. Matching the way he looked at her. The way his body leaned toward hers. The way everything about him concentrated on her.

She shivered. Caught in his intense gaze, she lifted her chin and licked her lips. His focus dipped, following her nervous action, then shifted to her eyes again. “Carter.”

Reaching up, he tucked her hair behind her ear then grazed his knuckles along her jaw. “I’m going to kiss you.”

Her breath hitched. “Okay.”

Fall In Love with A Strong Young Woman #New_Release

1/24/2017

Our news has been filled with strong women lately. However, Jadeite's Journey is not just about a strong young woman but a sister, a daughter and a teen finding her way in the world. When the world becomes a United Society, everyone is forced to make sacrifices for "their own safety" and the "befits of all". Does it sound eerily frightening?
Picture
When romance turns deadly…

Jadeite’s perfect world comes crashing down on her. In the futuristic world of United Society, her only problem has been how to act around the cute boy on the air shuttle. But Jadeite’s world changes when she comes across a man who looks alarmingly like her father. Clones were declared illegal years ago. When she sees her father, a robotic engineer, headed to the Dark Edge of United Society, she follows him and uncovers her father’s secret life.

Jadeite shadows her father past the boundary of United Society and into a primitive world of canyons and high deserts. She learns her father is a Ridge Runner passing between the two worlds. Even more alarming, she discovers her younger brother, Malachite, is sick and requires medicine only available from over the Ridge. After her father is arrested, Jadeite takes his place in order to save her brother’s life.

But her world turns even more precarious after she breaks up with her obsessive boyfriend, Mattie. Jadeite soon learns his threats are more than words, and she finds her life is in jeopardy.

EXCERPT:
Jadeite woke to Mattie holding a cool gel wrap to her forehead. She was propped on one of the chairs that lined the dance floor.

He offered her a drink of punch. “This will revive you. Oh, and I told the principal to tone down the heat.”

Guess Mattie’s power extended to the entire teaching staff.

“I’ll give you a break for a couple of dances, then we have to get back out there, don’t we?”

His expression made the request into a barely disguised order.

Jadeite nodded and looked away. She hated this guy, absolutely hated him.

It was after midnight when the event ended. She stifled a yawn as Mattie escorted her to the waiting shuttle.

They had driven a few minutes when Mattie lowered the partition between the front and back seats. The driver idled outside the public air-shuttle station where lights revealed a shuttle packed with passengers. The passengers, all adults, sat facing forward. None were reading, visiting, or talking via phone waves.

“Driver, take us to the bistro near the school.”

“Yes, sir.” The tinted window slid up again.

Jadeite stared at the passengers as their shuttle moved ahead. Why would people be transported at this late hour? United Society prided itself on daytime shifts for everyone. One woman looked confused, sweeping her eyes from side to side at those around her. As their private shuttle took off, Jadeite glanced back. She could have sworn a man’s face at the window was cloaked in fear.

She turned to Mattie. “Why are all those people on the transport so late at night?”

He wrapped his arm around her shoulder. “Don’t worry that pretty little head of yours. Those people are being transported to other areas in United Society.”

That’s what they’d told Electra about her parents.

She Came With The Tide by Viviana Mackade:
He’s impulsive, fearless, and fun loving.

Erik Axelsson, Ax, had it all: talent, fame, money. He’d lived the rock & roll life fully and with gusto until it wasn’t fun anymore. Without a second thought, he’d traded the spotlight with the Floridian sun, and the guitar with a surfboard. Young, rich, and free from anything - what more he could need?

She’s innocent, scared, and in trouble.
Andrea Smith escaped the life imposed to her when her parents joined a cult. After years on the run, hunger pushed her to accept a stranger’s offer for breakfast. She had no clue her life changed with that simple ‘yes’.

But the past catches up with her, forcing Andrea to choose what person she wants to be: the scared cult member that obeyed in silence, or the new woman Erik made blossom.

She had no clue her life changed with that simple ‘yes’

Excerpt:
Erik brushed his palm on his prickling shoulders as the angry sun hit, leaving only salt where ocean drops had been a few minutes before. He revered in that roasting pleasure, in the blues of the sky and water surrounding him. Entertained by his unplanned guest, he pulled his dripping hair into a messy bun.

It had been a good day for surfing, with waves still crashing on the shoreline. The rumble must have hidden the croaky zip of the tent’s zipper because when he looked down at the entrance, he found two huge brown eyes staring at him.

The echo of lifetimes ago, distant, feeble, poked at him. The feeling dwelling into his heart after his parents had died, now lingered on her delicate features. Fear.

The girl took a breath, clenched her teeth and crawled out. She rose on all of her five feet five or so. “Who–” she cleared her throat. “Who are you?”

Wasn’t that a question he wasn’t used to? Everybody knew Ax and the Hurricanes. He’d spent ten years of his life on everybody’s mouth, eyes and above all, ears. Newspapers. TV. Concerts. Surprise for the question shadowed the male appreciation of the woman in front of him. For now. He’ll so be back at that.

“I think the question is, who are you?” he retorted, crossing his arms over his chest.

“A camper.”

“Well, camper, your tent is on my property, in case you missed that,” he said pointing at the Private Property notice on the berm not far from her den. He had to invest some money into a proper sign, he thought when he eyed the rusty, barely visible sign. “My house’s back there, anyway.”

She turned around, took those details in. “Oh.”

Erik used that time to make some math. A girl, alone, in an old tent. The black bag he’d peeked to with clothes in it. That look in her eyes. He sighed. “You hungry?”

She nodded.

“Let’s go.”

He took his surfboard and turned to go. “What?” he asked when she didn’t move.

“I–I don’t know you.”

Yeah, okay, back to that. She either had lived on the moon for the past fifteen years or was bullshitting him. He would give her the benefit of the doubt because she was hot, and keep Sheriff Charlie on speed dial for a while. He turned around. “I’m Erik Axelsson.”

He waited for his name to dawn on her. Nothing. Seriously?

“I’m Andrea Smith.”

“All right, Andrea Smith. I’m hungry, covered in sand, and the sun is cooking my brain. I’m going in, you do as you please.”

Happy Book Birthday Connie L. Smith! Demons and Shifters.. oh my!

1/14/2017

Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres. I'm in love with the magic and fantasy of it all. Connie L. Smith's latest book, Within the Essence, has all that and more. This young adult paranormal romance will keep you reading into the night! But don't take my word for it... see for yourself!
Picture
As the demons near, the Essences rise…

AJ had never been particularly athletic or coordinated, so waking up to realize she suddenly has super-human strength is a massive, mind-shaking shock. Finding that she’s gained a stalker overnight is another mark in the unusual category, and when she discovers she’s always had the essence of a werewolf in her blood, her world all but shifts beneath her.

Demons, she’s told, are looming in the world’s future, and the only hope humanity has of surviving their arrival is if she and teenagers like her surrender their humanity to dive into their mythical essences. Fairies, dragons, dwarves, mermaids… The remnants of seventeen different fantasy species must come to life to save the lives of everyone.

Someway, an army of supernatural teenagers must prepare to meet the demons escaping from their dimensional banishment, or everything ends. Can these teens succeed and save the world?

Excerpt:
“My name.” He shrugged. “It’s Julius.”

“Well, that’s one question answered, at least,” she admitted after a humorless laugh. “But why are you following me?”

He breathed deeply like he would need the strength, and probably the patience, to see this conversation to its conclusion. “I'm a gatherer.”

She shook her head and held her hands out to her sides in a helpless gesture. “What's a gatherer?”

“AJ,” he started, drawing out her name as if unsure how to proceed. “Things are happening. All over. I know you've been affected.”

“What things?”

She’d purposely chosen the question to divert the attention from herself. He seemed to notice since he gave a light shake of his head.

“What could be the beginning of the end,” he told her. “I wish I could offer a more pleasant explanation, but you need to be aware of what's at stake here.”

“And what is at stake?”

“The world as we know it. Evil has returned, and if not dealt with, it’ll take over.”
“Evil’s returned?” she parroted in a dubious tone and crossed her arms in front of her. “I wasn't aware it left. Ever heard of Hitler? Attila the Hun? Mint Oreos?”

“Evil men,” he nodded in acquiesce, “and evil… snack food.” He looked at her curiously, forehead scrunched, then shrugged another time. “But it's still human. Or, food. I'm talking major evil, above and beyond anything a human could achieve.”
“What's gonna achieve it then? Aliens?”

He stared directly into her eyes, a fierce resolve unlike anything she'd experienced from him lighting his features. “Demons.”

About the Author:
Connie L. Smith spends a decent amount of time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and might forever be sad that she doesn’t have fairy wings. And that she can’t swing dance. Much of her preferred music is severely outdated, and as an adult she’s kind of obsessed with Power Rangers. She has her BA from Northern Kentucky University in Speech Communication and History (she doesn’t totally get the connection either), and her MA in English and Creative Writing.

Scavenger Falters- Alicia's Unique Upbringing @liza_oconnor #review

1/10/2017

Picture

Alisha has a unique upbringing compared to most SkyRyders, which saves the day once again.

  1. She has sat and listened to wealthy socialites discuss how to get around the laws of ordinary people and how to twist the meaning in legal papers to say something different than its proposed purpose.
  2. She spent untold money playing in wind-tunnels when her parents moved to FlatLand. (It’s one of the few places in the Americas that has NO wind. Not even a faint breeze.)
  3. Then she escaped to Capital and was rescued by street people who shared their knowledge, taught her many tricks of their trade, and saved her Grandfather from certain death.
  4. She then taught herself how to fly a catcher so she could become a Scavenger and make money to keep Gramps and her alive. And since she had never been taught what ‘couldn’t’ be done with a catcher, most of her flying skills appear to a normal Ryder as impossible.
Her unique upbringing makes her uniquely qualified to spot and explain the dangers in the latest regulations imposed upon the SkyRyders.

Alisha Kane, the Corps’ best flyer, is promoted to colonel, in charge of teaching the Corp’s SkyRyders her extraordinary flying maneuvers. The man she loves, Logan, continues to place the Corps first and insists they both remain focused on their work. For Alisha, this means ferreting out the best flyers in a Corps that has systematically forced great flyers into mediocrity. Logan focuses on learning Alisha’s flying techniques so that he can become the hero the East Coast desperately needs. The result includes fractured ribs and broken hearts, but through it all they never relinquish their love of the Corps.

EXCERPT
Alisha get’s drilled on the new regs.
The only thing that made the exercise tolerable was that Jack’s examples were always funny. “You’re on leave, having a nice day in the Capital, when suddenly you see a Ryder land right smack in a crowd of people on Hathworth street. Worse yet, he is completely nude. What regs have been touched upon and what is your course of action?”
“First, I ensure no civilian has been injured by his action. Then with my own money, I purchase an Indian shawl from the street vendor and order the soldier to wrap himself up. I then get the catcher out of the street because it’s a traffic hazard—”
“The regs, Alisha…” Logan reminded her.
“Reg 13.89…3?” she stated without certainty. “Except during battle conditions all effort should be made that no civilian is harmed or injured during flight exercises.”
“How do you know he’s not part of a battle squad?” Jack asked.
“This one I’ve got. Reg 3.342 states that all soldiers must be properly geared for battle. Clearly, he was not. Reg 2.67 states that on-duty officers must be in uniform. Finally, Reg 14.2…67…no, 66, says that when a soldier is not on duty and off Corps sites that his behavior is regulated by the laws and cultural standards of the place of occupancy. While nudity is not illegal in Capital, the street the soldier has landed on is mostly southern Baptist, so the sight of a nude soldier would be offensive to their cultural standards, which is why I bought him a shawl and ordered him to cover up. Reg 14.678 says that an officer is responsible for enforcing all regulations whether on or off duty, regardless of whether the offending soldier is directly under the officer’s command. That is also why I cleared the catcher, because causing a traffic obstruction is illegal in the Capital.”
“Yeah, but that is clearly never enforced,” Jack observed. “Just ask the vendor you bought the shawl from. He’s probably pulled his cart right in the middle of the street for better traffic business.”
“Reg 14.891 says the Corps is required to uphold and abide all laws currently instated, regardless whether they are enforced upon the general public.”
“That can’t be right,” Powell said and looked at his book.
“That’s what it says,” Logan observed.
“I think we should get that one rescinded as well,” Powell muttered.
Alisha nodded. “I think there’s quite a few of the regs that need to be rescinded, but 14.891 is definitely one of them. It sounds good in theory, but what if a town controlled by the Drug Cartel passed a law that forbids flying or weaponry within city limits? They could dress it up real pretty: ‘Make our streets safe: ban guns.’ Show some scavengers sweeping down and stealing your groceries right out of your hands. So the town votes out the guns and flyers. Then the Cartel, which controls local enforcement, proceeds to ignore the laws and go on with their business, but now it’s a Corps-free zone. We can only send in ground troops, and they can’t carry guns.”
General Powell glared at Jack.
Jack reached behind him and grabbed paper and pen. Making a quick note, he finally looked up. “What other ones bother you?”
“Well, Reg 14.266…if that’s the ‘obey local cultural standards’ law.”
“It is,” Jack replied, “And the reason being much the same?”
“Sure. Cultural standards are difficult. For example, that law would prevent a female soldier from entering a quarter of Capital.”
“But that reg only applies when they aren’t on duty,” the general objected.
“Yes, but let’s say I walk from Hathworth Street three blocks down to Melborne, wearing these fatigues. I have violated some cultural standard on each block. Didn’t hurt anyone, and normally no one would ever complain. But what if they decided to make an issue and beat me with their god sticks…or worse drag me down into a cellar and leave me there until their God has forgiven me for my transgression? According to this Reg, the Corps can’t do a thing. When we are off duty, it cedes its control and protection over to local governments and even more frightening, local cultural standards.”
Jack didn’t even wait for the general’s nod, he just wrote it down on the sheet.
By the time Alisha had finished her ‘what ifs,’ most of the Regs in 13 and 14 were on the list.
“Who the hell approved these?” the general demanded.

Alisha has been promoted following her bravery during the attack on her base. Now she must teach recruits how to fly like she does in a short period of time so they can save lives on other bases. But as her career soars, her love life falters. Logan refuses to give into his feelings for fear of getting Alisha in trouble. Yet his jealousy causes him pain.

Ms. O'Connor does it again. The sequel to Scavenger's Mission, we see Alisha grow in responsibility and maturity as she's faced with tough choices. I was angry at Logan for not acting on his feelings, life is too short but I did understand his thoughts.

There are many twists and turns in this novel as we learn more about each of the characters and the corps. I'm in awe of Alisha's strength while facing tough times. She's truly an exemplar person. I wish I was more like her.

Ms. O'Connor continues the gripping tale of a young woman who faces the biggest challenge of her life. I'm excited to read the third book to see if Alisha and the Skyriders can protect the world.

Blurb:
A Starr falls, and a family is found.
On the run from the Organization, Starr and Christian find safety on the Qualla Boundary with their friends, Ben and Coda, but Starr needs answers. She owes her dear dead friends, Sami and Jody, that much. She forms a team of her own to fight the general and his recruits.
Di, a mutual friend and anti-everything is a no-brainer, plus her Taser will come in handy. Frank, Starr’s BFF, will put his life on the line for her. Ben and Coda, not to be outdone by Starr’s friends, also swear their allegiance. Christian’s the only hold out. He knows what the Organization is capable of. He has the beaten body to prove it, but when Starr wants something, she gets it.
Now that the team’s together, everything should be perfect. Trouble is Starr loves Christian but so does Di. And Frank, well, he’s never been very good at hiding his love for Starr. Will his four-year long crush on her threaten the safety of the team?
Life becomes tense on the Qualla Boundary, sparks fly, and the Organization is about to smash in their door.

EXCERPTS: (Please use only one)
1. Starr
He leans in to kiss me. I tilt my head up. Our lips are about to meet when images flash before my eyes—white hair, haunting blue eyes, made for pictures smile…. My eyes open wide. “Oh my god, Christian, I just remembered someone from my grandparents’ house.”
He pulls his face away from me, his eyes wide. “Who?”
“Gimme a second.” I turn the computer back on. I pace back and forth around the room as it boots up—the WiFi is way too slow for my patience level. “I don’t know his name. I remember his face—his face was plastered all over my grandparents’ wall. He held gold shovels and cut ribbons with my grandparents.”
The Yahoo home screen comes to life. I click the headline section below the newsreel until I get to the one I want. “That guy!” I point at the screen. “That’s the guy!” I click on the picture so it takes up the whole screen. “Jerry White, the pastor of the Jonathon Drive Church. I didn’t remember him until I saw the picture.” I study the screen up close. “Who is the other guy next to him?” I say more to myself than Christian. My eyes skim the headline for the other man’s name.
Before I can read it aloud, Christian says, “That’s Samuel Langhorne, the new governor of North Carolina.”
I’d be an idiot if I missed the bitterness in his voice. “Christian, what’s wrong?”
“He won the election last fall after his Democratic opponent was killed in a car accident.” Tears streak the sides of his face.
“Your dad.”
“My dad.”

2. Starr
I know everyone at school thought—scratch that—assumed I had my shit together. Class President, captain of the cross-country, track, and swim teams, Miss “Voted Mostly Likely to Run a Fortune 500 Company,” but it was a lie. It was all a lie. Beneath the confident, outgoing Starr Bishop was little Jessica Chamberlain, a girl scared shitless. A girl so insecure in her day-to-day interaction with her peers that she decided to become the boss of them instead. A girl afraid to open her heart to boys because the prospect of getting said heart broken seemed too painful. The boy beside me changed me though. The moment he took my hand at the club all those days ago, he changed me.
He shudders when he inhales. A reminder of his bruised ribs. A tear streaks down my cheek. His lips, slightly parted as he exhales, spoke magic to me at the falls yesterday when he declared his love for me. As sure in his love, as he is about everything. I felt it too—that love he spoke of. I feel it now. I think I’ll feel it always.
I never gave love much thought before yesterday, never allowed myself the opportunity to love someone other than my parents. The less interaction I had with boys, the better Sami, Jody, and I got along. Another tear streams down my cheek. I long to blanket myself in his undivided attention, to escape the feelings of sadness that linger whenever I think of Sami and Jody.
I trace his lips, no longer caring if I wake him. In fact, hoping I do.

3. Di: Her First Chapter
The morning drags on period after brutal period. Contemporary Issues used to be my favorite class—that is until Starr and Christian disappeared. Now New Lifer Tammy dominates every discussion, including weather updates with her conservative agenda. I’ve taken to sharpening my fingernails into points. And don’t even get me started about Chemistry with Morris. That should be self-explanatory. Of course, English Lit’s all right. I miss Starr, but One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest sorta reads like my personal memoir.
When the bell finally releases us, we scamper like Pavlov’s dogs to the cafeteria. A few underclassmen fall victim to a well-placed shove as I barrel down the stairs, but no one dares complain. No one wants an up-your-junk meeting with my Docs.
My first problem arises when Mr. Hollywood isn’t at the designated meeting place. Most likely, he’s caught up with Little Red in a well-lit corner trying to pull an R-rating to her PG-13, but if he doesn’t show soon, I’ll smash my bag across his head and drag him out into the street.
I take my time selecting a lunch tray. My choices? Insane asylum pink or puke green. Hmmm, let’s select the most disgusting shades on the color wheel to make the cafeteria food appear more appetizing. I grab insane asylum pink, realize Mr. Hollywood’s still a no-show, turn back to the rack, and exchange it for puke green. If I don’t enter the food line soon, a Spork wielding wannabe rent-a-cop will start harassing me. Then my next problem becomes everyone’s problem and I’ll probably make a scene and get kicked out of school—which could work to my advantage…I might have to consider that as Plan B. For now, I’ll stick to Plan A.

Don't forget to read how Starr's story begins in Starr Fall!

On the run from the Organization, Starr never planned on falling in love.

Starr Bishop’s the complete package. A perfect smile, brains to match, and a winning attitude. Boys want to date her and girls want to be her. She’s the type of girl you want to hate, if only she wasn’t so damn likable. But don’t worry, she’s not interested in your boyfriend. Boys are one complication she can live without.

When the Organization decides she’s not only the model student but the ideal assassin, Starr’ll need a lot more than high test scores and extracurricular involvement to get herself out of that commitment.

Dark, moody, and dead sexy Christian Evergood is the last person she’d expect—or even want— to come to her rescue. From opposite ends of Webster High’s social hierarchy, their lives collide in one electrifying moment. Christian isn’t the Goth loner he pretends to be, he’s a part Cherokee, All-American boy who wants to be a hero, Starr’s hero. Christian makes Starr forget that the Organization is after her, but nothing will stop the Organization from collecting their top recruit.

By the way, the spot for junior class president just became available.

What People Are Saying About Starr Fall....
"I was swept up in Kim Briggs' whirlwind of secrets, swoon, and adventure from page one. Beautifully writing combined with a smart, driven protagonist made this a book I couldn't put down.” —Isabel Bandeira, Author of Bookishly Ever After (Jan 2016) and Dramatically Ever After (June 2017)

As the opener in what promises to be a thrilling series, Starr Fall hits the ground running and hits the water swimming. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough as Starr went from a super-achieving but otherwise pretty normal high school junior to a girl on the run from a shady, powerful government (maybe) agency and a deep, dark conspiracy we only see in glimpses. And why has the weird kid from school suddenly become her ultra-hot sidekick, with a connection between them that literally gives off sparks? He’s a lot more than he seems. Every answer raises another question as the reader ricochets between the threat level outside the remote cabin and the heat level inside it. Briggs knows how to crank up both kinds of tension, in the best possible way. Book two can’t come soon enough for this reader! -- Liz Coley, author of the award winning, internationally best-selling Pretty Girl-13

New Year! New Writing! What Will 2017 Bring You?

1/1/2017

Picture

Goals? Resolutions? Plans? Dreams?

As we say goodbye to 2016, many of us are happy to see it go. Yet, I had a pretty amazing year.

This year, I was able to do what I love (write and teach) within my own timeframes. I had many wonderful stories published. Some of my favorites were Redeeming Love in the boxset Celebrate and Broken Dreams in the box set Cowboys, Bulls and Buckles.
Picture
Picture
The teaching has been so much fun as I was able to revisit time with a former student as a one on one part-time aid. Seeing his growth was a blessing and I loved our conversations about how we really would colonize Mars.

This past summer my daughter got married. Talk about stress! I'm sure you will get some more writing out of that...in the very least some poems and musings on life. It was hard to believe the small child I once held so close to my heart was now following her own.
Picture
Picture
Sadly there were heartaches this year as well. Losses of loved ones and changes to dreams. But loss and failure are learning opportunities so with each one, I tried to find the lesson I needed. Probably most importantly, life was and is too short for grudges and anger. We should let it go to where ever it goes and be happy. The anger only hurts ourselves.
Picture
2017 is upon us. We have our feet firmly planted in a new year...365 new days...What will each one bring? What lessons? What joys?

For me, I have new stories to write and share. My son finishes his college degree this year and moves into his first place. Hopefully, more travels and chances to meet face to face with readers and friends.

What do you wish for the new year? I wish for you... blessings abundant, health and happiness!
