.@melissa_keir: More than One Night by Nicole Lieren #characterinterview #BTG

9/28/2015

Picture
I love when I can get inside the character's head and see just what their motivation is. Today I've got an interview with a bad boy turned good... Is that even possible??? Let's find out!

Hi Everyone, Nicole Leiren here with my bad-boy-turned-good hero, Daniel Bresland to talk about his starring role in “More Than One Night” – Book 1 in the Heroes of the Night series.

NL: Hi Daniel, thanks for taking time to be with us here today.
Bad-boy-turned-good? Sweetheart, I’m always good…just ask any of the ladies.

NL: *laughing and blushing a bit* That’s not exactly what I meant.
 I just like to keep the record straight. I do have a rep to protect.

NL: Tell me about this “rep” you have.
It’s not complicated. I’m all about having a good time in the company of a beautiful woman.  We have some drinks, maybe dinner, and then I give her a night she’ll never forget.

NL: Sounds like every girl’s dream date…or something like that. So who are you currently dating?
*now he’s laughing* I don’t date.

NL: But you just said…
One night, that’s it. That’s the extent of my relationships with women. We have a good time then go our separate ways.

NL:  What if you really like someone?
Not going to happen. Women are only interested in me for two things, money and a night they’ll never forget.

NL: Not sure all women fit into that category. Why are you so jaded in your views on women and relationships?
Cause and effect. They’ve used me so I use them. Sounds like an even trade, doesn’t it?

NL: You’re talking to a hopeless romantic here, so I’m not sure I can buy in to that theory. It sounds like you’ve been hurt very badly in the past.
You don’t know the half of it and, before you ask, I don’t want to talk about it.

NL: Not very good at sharing, are you? You certainly had no problems sharing thus far.
I can’t explain it, but I don’t mind talking to you. It’s like you get me.

NL: *smiling* Well, I’ve studied your type. I have to tell you, while I know you’ve been pretty clear how you feel about women and relationships; I sense you’re truly not happy with that area of your life. Don’t you want a happily ever after?
Everybody wants that, but not everybody gets it…or deserves it.

NL: Wait, you don’t think you deserve a happily ever after?
No.

NL: Why not?
That’s back to the I don’t want to talk about it area, so we should move on or end this interview. I don’t want to be impolite or my Mama will fuss at me all the way from Mississippi.

NL: *smiling again* Thought I recognized a Southern accent.
Yes ma’am.  Southern boy, born and raised. Where I spent most of my time until Afghanistan. Spent way too much time over there.

NL: Thank you for your service. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.
You have no idea. Until someone has seen and experienced war… Let’s’ just move on, okay? You’re not from the South, are you?

NL: No, Midwest girl, born and raised.
Daniel winks at me. I’ve always though a Midwest girl would be the perfect woman to settle down with. I tried a southern belle, didn’t work out for me.

NL: My husband of 27 years likes this Midwest girl too. I hope you find the perfect woman for you someday soon, Daniel.
Me too. I know I come across all cocky and full of bravado but, truth is, I want to find someone special – that one in a million that I can spend more than one night with.

NL:  Me too, Daniel. I know there’s someone out there for you – someone who will find you when you least expect it and turn your whole world upside down and make you believe in happily ever after again.
Daniel’s laughing now. “You really are a hopeless romantic.”

NL: Indeed I am, Daniel. Indeed I am!
Thank you for joining Daniel and I for our little talk.  If you’d like to see Daniel meet his Midwest girl, be sure to check out “More Than One Night” – available September 29.

More Than One Night
Heroes of the Night book #1
Nicole Leiren

The Few. The Strong. The Brave.

Melodie Alexander, a children's librarian, prefers to live life between the pages of a book. But when the death of her best friend prompts her to step out of her comfort zone, she finds herself directly in the path of self-proclaimed bad boy, Daniel Bresland.

Daniel knew how to be a solider. Life after war? Not as easy. He served his country in Afghanistan, both in the military and as a private contractor, but fighting the war came at high personal cost. Now he's determined to keep his relationships "casual" in order to protect his heart and prevent anyone from getting too close.

A chance encounter between Melodie and Daniel on a flight to Dallas proves that opposites really do attract. But when scars from the past threaten their new relationship almost before it starts, Daniel must decide if he can risk opening his heart again to convince Melodie he wants more than one night.

If you love men in uniform and believe the night belongs to lovers, then The Heroes of the Night series is perfect for you! Stories of military heroes, sexy and flawed, and the women they love.

Excerpt  – First Date

Daniel walked through the doorway promptly at eight. Never early. Never late. Beer, sweat, and women's perfume permeated his senses. My kind of party. He scanned the bar area looking for Melodie. Men in cowboy hats talking up women in high heels occupied most of the seats. Though there were some empty chairs, his date didn't seem to be the "I'll wait for you at the bar" type. Making his way through the hot bodies and large red couches interspersed for the comfort of the patrons who needed a rest from dancing in the lounge area, he searched the faces for a glimpse of her chocolate brown waves. Still no Melodie.

He rolled his neck to ease the growing tension. She didn't strike him as the type to agree to come and then back out. He moved to the center of the lounge area to check out the dancers. Though still early for a Friday night, the dance floor hosted a decent number of people gyrating to the band's rendition of a popular Def Leppard song.

Keen eyes scanned the crowd looking for her dark brown head bobbing in time to the music. Based on what he'd learned about her, it didn't seem likely she'd be hanging out with a bunch of strangers, but he felt compelled to cover all the bases. Still nothing. Where in the hell could she be? His disappointment seemed largely out of place for a woman he'd just met and had only known for a few hours. Time for a drink. Someday soon he'd have to find something besides alcohol and women to mask his pain, but that day was not today.

Moving back to the bar, he ordered a beer and made his way toward the outdoor patio. Maybe he could bum a cigarette off someone. He really didn't smoke, but sometimes he needed to distract himself from his nonstop internal diatribe.

Right before exiting, he caught sight of the brunette beauty, the most beautiful wallflower he'd ever laid eyes on. Melodie. In a denim skirt, white blouse, and red jacket—the picture of patriotism in a curvy, sexy package. He made eye contact and swaggered in her direction. "God bless the USA."

Her innocent look shot arousal through his veins, settling just below his belt. Thirty seconds and already he needed a cold shower. Or a hot time in bed with Miss USA here.

"Do you always make random comments, or do I just bring out the best in you?"

"You definitely bring out the best in me, sweetheart. I was just commenting about how patriotic you look in your red, white, and blue."

"Oh…" her blush matched her jacket.

Wanting to save her from herself, he gulped a few more swigs of his beer before tossing it in the trash can. "Let's dance, eighties girl."

Grabbing her hand, he pulled her away from the wall. His brows creased. She'd looked comfortable essentially fading into the woodwork. His eyes swept over her body. Why wouldn't she be the center of attention no matter what the occasion? Beautiful and smart with a hint of sweetness—a dangerous combination for his heart. Not wanting to delay his body in close proximity with hers one moment longer, he pulled her into the fray of the mosh pit, hoping modesty prompted her to lie about having two left feet. The moment her body started moving in time to the music, he forgot all about her feet as her softer curves begged for attention.

He matched his steps to hers. The crowd of people pressed against them, forcing their bodies closer. This is more like it. Muscles flexed, hips rotating—sharing all his best moves. Her moves were damn good too. Those hips…her breasts…even her legs…moving to Brian Adam's smooth beat. Each subtle sway sky-rocketed his libido to levels for which he couldn't be held responsible for very long.

The guitars strummed while the drums grew louder, feeding off the energy of the crowd. No slow songs from this group. Time to improvise and make his move. Pulling her tighter, he closed his eyes to focus on the warm-blooded woman fate had delivered in the seat next to him. This wallflower possessed curves which, at present, were exactly where he wanted them—pressed against his chest. Lower, the softness led to muscled thighs igniting multiple fantasies about them being wrapped around his hips. Despite his self-proclaimed promise to behave, he lowered his face to the curve of her neck, inhaling softly. Sweet Jesus, not only did she rally every ounce of testosterone in his body to attention, but her sweet smell was capable of bringing any man…this man…to his knees.

Dear God in heaven, he was in trouble.

Tell (The Heckmasters, Book 3)
Author: Allison Merritt
ISBN13: 9781619233010
Length: 70k
Release date: March 8, 2016

Half demon, all male...one woman strong enough to love him.

Knowing the day will come when his demon blood will overcome his humanity, Tell Heckmaster has been searching for a miracle. Something, "anything," to counteract the spell. So far, he's come up empty.

Just as the town of Berner has finally found peace, Tell's worst fears manifest. Strange, new powers are tearing at his finely honed control. Putting everyone-including the pretty seamstress he's kept at arm's length-in terrible danger.

Sylvie Duke has everything she needs. Everything except Tell, who doesn't seem to own a lick of sense. His resistance only strengthens her resolve to stay by his side, driven by a nameless inner knowing that without her, all will be lost.

Reluctantly, Tell is forced to admit that the closer he is to Sylvie, the better he's able to quell his demon. But when a cryptic warning from an old ally tips the balance, nothing-not even love-may be strong enough to protect Berner from the raging fires of hell.

Warning: Contains a woman who can handle a hatchet with as much skill as a needle, and a man whose touch can transport her to heaven. Or hell. Accidentally, of course. Readers may wish to invest in an asbestos suit. Potholders just aren't going to cut it.

A love of reading inspired Allison Merritt to pursue her dream of becoming an author who writes historical, paranormal, contemporary, and fantasy romances, often combining the sub-genres. She lives in a small town in the Ozark Mountains with her husband and dogs. It's not unusual to find her lurking in graveyards, wandering historical sites, or listening to ghost stories.

Allison graduated from College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri with a B.A. in mass communications that's gathering dust after it was determined that she's better at writing fluff than hard news.

Excerpt:

Séances were held in a small but lovely room where Miss Marple might serve tea. Burgundy drapes swagged corner to corner. Blue flames flickered low in the fireplace courtesy of a special-effects chemical log Fabrizio swore would bring up the ambiance.
A medium-sized round table sat smack in the middle of the room, seven chairs around it and a purple cloth covering it. The lights were low. So many candles were lit that the place was warm enough for bread to rise.
Fabrizio was already there, looking nervous as a crawfish next to a pot on the boil. He knew, and I knew, and he knew I knew he wasn't exactly what you'd call a genuine medium, but I had to give him credit. He looked like one, every inch, from the top of his turbaned head to the bottoms of his white patent-leather boots. His long face glistened with perspiration.
"Fabrizio," I said. "Why don't we blow out a few of these candles? Your makeup and eyeliner are going to run."
He nodded, and I set about doing it. The poor guy had to be pretty warm. His long-sleeved white jumpsuit was layered under a full-length sequined white cape. A cross between the Great Houdini and Liberace.
Within a few minutes, Mrs. Cecile Elway and company arrived. Five in all, just like at dinner the night before. There were low murmurs of appreciation as they glanced around the room, taking in the whole experience.

.@melissa_keir: The Acorn Tattoo by Alyse Miller #newrelease #NewAdult

9/22/2015

When I was a teenager, I struggled with choosing between two guys. I wanted them both for different reasons. G was sweet and caring, older and away at college. J was rough around the edges, rode a motorcycle, and was also older. Eventually, I picked only one and ended up marrying him. I can totally relate with our heroine in The Acorn Tattoo.  There's two seemingly perfect men in her life.... Who should she choose? Who would you choose??
Picture
Sometimes Neverland isn’t the place you go to stay young; it’s the place you leave to grow up.

Claire Baker is an orphan who has always been afraid to open her heart – that is, until she meets Jake Holland, the Boy with the Acorn Tattoo, who sweeps her off her feet with his ocean-timbered voice and sheepish Lost Boy grin. Consumed by their budding romance everything seems to be perfect for Claire, completely perfect --

– Except for Davie, Claire’s childhood friend who’s always held a corner of her heart – the dark, somber-eyed boy who has grown into a handsome, enigmatic man – and who has hooked himself so deeply inside of her she cannot escape him. When Davie professes his love in an unexpected burst of loosened passion, Claire finds herself torn between the two men: the one that’s stolen her heart and the one who’s held it all along.

Now, Claire must navigate through the purities and passions of love and accept the consequences of finally letting her heart take the lead.

Lost in Neverland, how does a girl choose between the Pan and the pirate?
~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“I think I—hic—love you.”
The words tumbled eagerly over Jake’s lips and spilled into the air like offbeat tap dancers, a graceful quintet momentarily tripped by an unexpected step. Jake grinned sheepishly and dipped his head, sending sandstorm blond locks tumbling across the deep hollow of his angled cheekbones. A second hiccup followed the first, and his head bobbed in tandem with the sound. Even with his face downcast, Claire could see the upturned curve of his lips pinched in his profile. He was grinning again.
Claire and Jake had finished their picnic of fresh fruits and cheese nearly an hour before. Afterward, when the wine was empty, they lounged together comfortably under the brilliant kaleidoscope colors of the changing fall leaves. Together, they watched the sky turn from robin’s egg blue to cornhusk yellow. Jake had fallen quiet, as he often did—his back propped lightly against the crackled white bark and his long, nimble fingers plucking at the blades of sun-warmed grass that brushed against his knee, as familiar as if they were the strings of his guitar. Claire lay on her back inside Jake’s shadow, staring past his grinning profile to the sky. It was a spectacularly beautiful day in the simplest of ways—the kind that seems to want for daydreaming. The kind of day that was made of the stuff of dreams itself.
EXCERPT:
She stood up and began to stretch her cramped muscles when the scent of apples slammed into her. It fairly choked her—the taste of sweet earth and tart apple.
Maybe I'm having a heart attack. She shook her left arm around, but nothing happened. The Army First Aid Handbook definitely stated something about odd scents and tingling in the left arm. Where was it coming from?
She took a step from behind the counter and a gust of air flattened her in a heartbeat. The sound of an explosion followed, adding more to the assault. Dust coated the entire store; books and shelves toppled over every inch of the floor. The shelves lay together like the folds of an accordion, grotesquely littered with books torn from their homes. Dust and dirt assaulted her senses as she wondered if she still lived. She swallowed the bile clogging her throat as she stared at the ceiling, unable to bring herself to move.
One moment she lay on her bookstore floor, the next her mouth clogged with dust as her heart pulsed behind her eyes. She couldn’t see anything but she was right back there in the sandbox, with the dust, the pain, and explosion that took everything from her.
Her ears began to ring and she touched a tender spot on her forehead to check for blood. Her vision cleared and nothing on her scalp seemed hurt or bruised either; she'd missed the counter by inches. The thought of dying from a blow to the head while in her bookstore seemed preposterous, and if she wasn't already crying she might have laughed.
She sat up on her elbows, taking short breaths to remain calm. Nightmare after nightmare rolled through her mind so fast that all she could do was breathe through the pain invading her body and the tears tracking through the dust on her cheeks. She pushed a long gust of air from her chest, and used the relaxation techniques she learned to deal with her post-traumatic stress. Slowly, breath after breath, her heartbeat resumed a normal cadence and she felt more like herself.
Shame battled for ground amidst the cacophony of emotions swelling to burst insider her. She hadn't worked through the worst of her nightmares; they could follow her to this new life. As feeling returned to her hands, chasing away the tingling of adrenaline, she realized she was happy to be alive, of course—and angry. She pushed stray cardboard and books off her legs and out of the way so she could stand, unsteady on her feet. She straightened her dress and brushed tears from her cheeks. She bent over so she could peek around the corner of the counter, sneaking out farther for a better view of where the explosion came from. On the ground lay a hand, palm facing her.
Maggie started to creep toward the hand, remaining cautious because whoever owned it knocked over two cases, and books flooded the floor in her path. She pushed through, gently sliding them out of her way as she moved closer while looking around for...
Maggie reached down and grabbed a large and scary edition of The Oxford Unabridged English Dictionary and held it up over her shoulder with both hands. She continued to inch toward the body. Her vision broke the edge of the last bookcase hiding him, and all the air rushed out of her lungs. He was huge, large, ginormous, and every other large adjective she could conjure up.
He was also very naked.
She leaned in closer, against her better judgment; the instinct to ensure he was at least alive proved more than she could resist. She scooted books out of the way with the toe of her shoe as she continued toward him. He certainly wasn't dead; she knew what death looked like, so she kept the book up in a throwing position. Finally close enough to check his pulse, she crouched down, much to her hip's dismay, and picked up the strong beat of his heart under her fingertips at the curve of his neck. He was alive, definitely alive, and his skin burned hot to the touch.
Far too much time had passed since she appreciated a naked male body, and his was certainly something to appreciate. He’s injured. You shouldn’t ogle him. She needed to conduct a damage and injury check. Starting at his feet, she progressed upward until she reached his face, cradled by books, and found herself staring into deep ocean eyes.
Their gaze shifted from her face to the book. In a blur of movement, so fast she couldn't react, he held the book in one of his hands, his body pressed over hers, and her wrists clutched in his other fist. A stunned moment of stillness descended. They were both breathing heavily, chests rising and falling, touching where his body held hers to the ground. He recovered first, throwing the book at a nearby pile and reaching to grip a wrist in either hand.
She shot him a nasty look before wrapping her legs around his waist in a grip strong enough to crush ribs, and then neatly smacked her forehead against his. Rearing his head back, he dropped a wrist and tentatively brought his hand to his forehead, checking for blood. In a split second, Maggie grabbed her fallen weapon and hit him square across his cheek.
Loud muttering curses exploded from him in a deep, accented voice. Before she could rear back he wrenched the book from her hand and threw it farther than her reach. It ricocheted off the other books as he regained control of her. Books dug into her back but she barely noticed with her bare legs wrapped around his narrow hips and his chest pressing her body to the ground. Maggie stared him down with a glare so menacing even the most insane of people would have released her, but the look he gave her in return was all heat.
I love getting to share new books with you...This one sounds amazing. Who doesn't love strong and sexy guys who are charged with protecting humans??
BLURB:
An immortal without a soul is bad enough. But when his only tether to remaining honorable is his addiction to bone-crushing pain, it makes Blaéz a dangerously loose cannon.
A Guardian sworn to protect mortals from supernatural evil, Blaéz straddles the edge of darkness as his needs grow. When a good deed brings him to the doorstep of a female unlike any other, one whose touch ignites emotions long lost in the hellish pits of Tartarus, he’s determined not to lose her. She belongs to him. But she’s human. Forbidden. And bringing her into his life may just destroy them both.
Darci Callahan has given up on love. But when a lethally handsome stranger suddenly appears late one night, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the captivating man with the pale, empty eyes—a man who awakens in her a desire she never believed possible. Except Blaéz brings more than unexpected passion to her life, he brings danger.
In this treacherous new world of gods and demons, Darci soon discovers a heart-shattering truth and the twisted games the gods play. Caught in the crosshairs, she’s forced to accept that, sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, you have to love them enough to let them go…
Excerpt: (PG:R)
Moments later, he pulled up outside the brownstone. She opened the door and turned to him. “Are you coming in?”
“No,” he said, tone flat. “You’re home, safe. I’ve work to do.”
Her gaze widened before narrowing. “Really? You brought me all this way just so I wouldn’t leave with Alex?” She shoved her hair off her face with an impatient hand, eyes citron in ire. “I don’t believe this. Blaéz, Alex is my brother’s gay friend. And, what? You plan to make me a prisoner in my own home? Let’s get one thing straight. I agreed to see you, not have you run my life.”
With that, she jumped out, banged the door behind her and ran up the stairs to her home as if she couldn’t get away from him fast enough. Blaéz didn't think, just reacted. He slammed out of the SUV, sprinted up the steps after her, and grabbed her just as she opened the front door.
“Oomph! What the—” She scowled up at him. “What now? You want to physically lock me up, too?”
“Shut up, Darci.” He pushed them inside. With his foot, he shut the door and trapped her against the wooden panel, slapping his palms beside her head. “You do this to me,” he growled. “When I'm away from you I get by, then I see you, and my mind’s in chaos—I cannot think straight—”
“And that is my fault?”
At her anger, his faded. With his body pinning hers to the door, he lowered his head to hers and groaned, “You torment me.”
“Don’t you dare kiss me,” she smacked a hand on his chest, “I'm too mad with you.”
As if that would stop him from taking what he craved. “I’m sure I can change your mind…I only know what I need right now...” Slow and deliberate, he ran his tongue across her compressed mouth. She refused to let him in. Stubborn woman. “And what I want is your tongue in my mouth, and you wrapped around me.” He bit her lower lip.
A choppy breath escaped her. He struck and captured her mouth. With languorous strokes, he deepened the kiss, sucking on her tongue.
A moment passed and she shuddered. Her body relaxed. She melted against him and kissed him back. Blaéz explored her mouth, tasting, licking, and claiming it as his own. This was what he needed, to touch her, to feel her again. His hands lowered to her hips, he pulled her closer. The V of her thighs hit his painfully hard groin. Ah fuck, he grunted, pure need garroting him.
She freed her mouth from his, panted, “This is hardly an apology.”
“Then I guess I’m not doing a very good job.” He nipped her jaw. “However, I learn…fast.”
“I'm sure.” A smile tipped her mouth. “And I'm really, really glad I torment you.”
“Sadist,” he murmured, trailing his lips down her neck.
About the Author
I’ve been creating stories from the moment I could string two words together. No matter the tale, it always has romance woven through them. Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic.
When I’m not writing or plotting new books, I like to read, travel, painting, or troll flea markets where I usually buy things I might never actually use because they're so pretty.
After working in a few jobs all art related, a chosen career as a fashion designer, then an art teacher, I finally found my passion four years ago: writing. There really is no other job I’d rather do.
Oh, and I live in the beautiful country of South Africa.
Blurb: When she’s good, she’s very good. But when he’s bad, she’s better. Taming the Beast, Book 2 As a good fairy, Heather is empathetic and chaste to a fault. No bad language, no dirty thoughts, flirting and no sex. But when a satyr named Daemon steps up to her reception desk at From Crud to Stud, she finds herself on the fast track to exquisite corruption. Daemon is the total bad-boy package with a kiss straight from the dark side. Though he’s here for a supernatural makeover, Heather can’t imagine why any red-blooded woman would want him to change. A disciple of the god of wine, Daemon has had his share of good times. But sex has never been this good. Heather brings out a new side of him, a side that makes him want to protect as well as pillage. But Daemon needs a little creative backup to help set his fairy’s naughtiness free. And that means bringing in Mistress Jin. Under the genie’s tutelage and Daemon’s shameless lust, Heather is about to learn what it means to let loose.
Warning: Not your typical bedtime story. May lead to indecent behavior, a taste for voyeurism, discipline, bondage, m/f, m/f/f and f/f action, which will result in screaming orgasms. Proceed with caution.
Surrendering to the Beast - Teaser 1
Excerpt:
Heather steeled herself to do battle with Satan. Cautiously, she faced her webcam and his image on her computer monitor. This evening, he’d assumed the form of a European playboy, a snifter of cognac held casually in one hand, dark hair slicked back, his blood-red ascot contrasting nicely with his white shirt and navy blazer. He certainly knew how to dress. “Cara mia.” Heat smoldered in his voice and dark eyes. “What can I do to you?” “For me,” she corrected gently, wondering when he’d ever get that right. Grinning, he focused on her white peasant blouse and jutted nipples, her areolas tightened from the chilly weather, not him. Tonight was damp and cool thanks to a spring storm that continued to rage in the French Quarter. Lightning flashed and the office lights flickered. Flames flared briefly in his pupils. “We’ll do many things to each other, no?” Heather smiled politely, a knee-jerk reaction for a good fairy. Needing to get tough, she held up his overdue bill, hoping he’d look at it rather than her chest. Her hand shook so badly the paper rattled. “How you tremble,” he cooed. “How pale you are. Allow me to put some color in your lovely cheeks. Heat that will last an eternity.” Her skin got even clammier. “Please, just pay your account.” She waved the paper and talked fast before losing her nerve. “Your grandson failed to show for his last two appointments. I’m sure he had a good reason. Unfortunately, he didn’t call to cancel.” She offered an apologetic smile and pressed on. “Because you’re the cardholder, we had to charge you for the time. I’m so sorry, but it is the rule.” One she was honor-bound to enforce as an employee of From Crud to Stud, a makeover service for supernatural beings. Howls from weres, hisses from vampires and obscenities from demons poured from the treatment rooms. Those poor souls were going through proverbial hell to suppress their beasts. They longed to date mortal women without freaking them out, while also winning their hearts the normal way. With real charm, not magic, with integrity and love, not lies and manipulation. But these makeovers took the staff’s valuable time and clients needed to pay for the effort. Even Satan should understand that. He gave her an indulgent smile. “What charges?” Gasping, she dropped the flaming paper in her trashcan before it burnt her fingers. “Later,” he said and killed the call. Hurriedly, Heather put out the small blaze, chiding herself for letting the account get to this point. She should have been firm with Satan’s grandson when he signed up for the service. Determined to make up for being too nice, she brought up her bank account to pay the charges herself. She was about to transfer the funds when the lights flickered twice, thunder boomed and the front door flew open, banging against the wall. She flinched. A blast of dank air and rain blew inside, followed by a guy who looked to be thirty or so. He wore a black cowboy hat, snug navy tee, low-slung jeans and cowboy boots. Once he shoved the door shut, he slumped against it, breathing hard. Heather stood so quickly her chair rolled into the wall. He didn’t notice. He’d closed his eyes and raised his face to the ceiling, his prominent Adam’s apple bobbing with his hard swallow. Alarmed yet intrigued, she regarded the short, dark hairs on his throat and took the rest of him in. His rain-dampened hair was the color of dark chocolate, thick and wavy, flowing to his broad shoulders. They heaved with his next ragged breath. Tall, possibly six-three, he was lean yet muscular. His wet tee clung to his well-defined pecs and abs, those bruising biceps. Stubble covered his strong jaw, upper lip and cheeks. His bronze skin spoke of days in the sun. Even from where she stood, Heather smelled his scent. Clean and masculine, a woodsy, fresh fragrance along with something else…the unmistakable odor of liquor. Uh-oh. It wasn’t often that mortals, drunk or otherwise, happened upon this place. When they did, Heather had ironclad rules to follow. First, buzz Constance, a voodoo priestess who could remove memories by laying her hands on someone’s head. Following that, Heather was supposed to buzz Becca, a half-mortal witch who owned this place. Heather leaned over her desk to press the intercom button. The guy turned to her, blinked slowly and stared. Her hand stalled. His eyes were amazing, the color of Lipton tea, ringed by long, sooty lashes, his attention riveted as he drank her in. Given his slow, sexy smile, Heather suspected he was undressing her with his eyes. She swallowed and was about to press the button when he groaned suddenly and mournfully, the sound of someone in serious pain.
Heather paused and decided not to call for anyone just yet. “Are you all right?”
About Me (You know you want to know!): I’m an award-winning, bestselling novelist in erotic, paranormal, contemporary and historical romance for Kensington, Samhain Publishing, Ellora’s Cave, Siren Publishing, Booktrope, Luminosity, Decadent, and indie. Yay! Booklist, Publisher’s Weekly, Romantic Times and numerous online sites have praised my work, and trust me, I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve had my books reach finals in the EPIC competition, one title was named Book of the Year at a review site, and others have won awards in RWA-sponsored contests. I’m actually featured in the 2012 Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market. Talk about feeling like a freaking star. Before my writing career, I was the editor of an award–winning Midwestern newspaper and worked in Story Direction for a Hollywood production company. Outside of being an admitted and unrepentant chocoholic, I’ve flown a single-engine plane (scary stuff), rewired an old house using an electricity for dummies book, and have been known to moan like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally whenever I’m eating anything Mexican or Italian. Title: Cocktales: An After-50 Dating Memoir
Author: Morgan Malone
Publisher: Turquoise Morning Press
Pages: 264
Genre: Romantic Memoir
An After-50 Dating Memoir…or Eight Years, around Eighty Men, but not nearly Eight Thousand Kisses.
There I was. Approaching 50, widowed for 15 years, alone for all that time, except for two kids, one dog, a full-time legal career, a house, a mortgage, some dear friends…and a wish. I just wanted to feel like a woman one more time. Not “Mom.” Not “Your Honor.” Not “Sis.” But, a desirable and desired woman.
I knew I wouldn’t, couldn’t fall in love again. My heart was buried in a grave in Brooklyn. But, I could offer a sense of humor, big blue eyes and intelligent conversation. I wasn’t sure about kissing or anything else; it had been a long time and I was not sure that sex was like riding a bike (which I could no longer do, given a bad knee and too many extra pounds). I was willing to try. Would anyone be interested?
To my surprise, the cyber-world was full of men like me; men who were looking for a second chance at love or lust, with a real woman, a woman just like me.
Cocktales is the true story of my adventures and misadventures in the world of online dating. It is full of practical advice (never wear knee-high hose on a first date, NEVER), giggles, groans and my growth as a woman. I cried a few tears, I made plenty of mistakes, but I also made many friends. I even fell in love.
Join me on my journey. It is a roller-coaster ride I think you will enjoy.
Book Excerpt:
Right before my forty-ninth birthday, I asked my husband if he minded if I had sex with another man. He didn’t answer me, so I persisted.
“Listen, I’m almost fifty years old, I know. Who would want me? I’ve had two kids and a hysterectomy. I’ve got stretch marks, scars and cellulite. And I know I need to lose at least fifty pounds.”
No response.
“It’s been a long dry spell, you know. Almost fifteen years. I think I’m entitled to at least one more orgasm that doesn’t come from something powered by a nine-volt battery.”
Still nothing.
“Okay, then, I take your silence to mean I am on my own in this. You don’t have an opinion one way or the other. Right?” Silence.
It was March and the Yankees were still in Spring Training so I knew so there were no distractions from current league standings or the pitching staff. His side of the bed was ghostly quiet. And empty. He had been dead for almost fifteen years.
I talked to him all the time. Not every minute of the day, but an ongoing dialogue in my head where I kept him informed of the day-to-day minutiae of our lives. I announced major developments then I waited for an answer. Call me crazy, but there were times when I heard his response in my head as clearly as if he had just spoken directly in my ear.
Sometimes, like now, there was nothing. Figure it out for yourself.
So, I turned out the light and sent a silent prayer Heavenward. “God, just once before I am over fifty, let me have sex with a man who wants me, let me remember how to do it. And let me feel. Amen.”
My pen-name is Morgan Malone. A twist on the old “What is my stripper name? A combination of the name of your first pet and the street you grew up on: Dino Homestead. I opted instead for the name of my first cat and my hometown to create Morgan Malone, an erudite yet brazen hussy, who decided, after 15 years of widowhood, to see if there were any men in America (and parts of Canada) who wanted to have sex with a 50 year-old woman. At least that is what I told myself I was doing. Along my almost ten-year journey through the online dating sites, I discovered men who were just as unsure of their intentions as I was. As I flirted with them, met them and even slept with quite a few, I began peeling off the layers of my emotional armor with less reluctance than I was peeling off my carefully coordinated lingerie. I found some really nice men, some very sexy men, some real dogs and a handful of genuine human beings who became friends as well as lovers. And I started to find myself: not just a mom, a lawyer, a wife and a widow but a woman I did not recognize. Yet there she was: a woman I did not like at times, a woman I thought no man would ever love, a woman who spent the first part of her life being the woman she thought she must be, a woman who was facing the last third of her life, finally, with anticipation.
My adventures and misadventures were met with disbelief by my friends who were convinced, almost to a woman, that the only men interested in a woman of our years was nigh on to 80 and in need of “a nurse and a purse.” So Cocktales has become not only a chronicle of my personal journey from widow to woman, from alone to independent, from needy to satisfied, but an instruction manual for the thousands of women facing the last half of their lives lonely and lacking confidence.
I am a published author of Katarina: Out of Control, an erotic romance with shades of “grey.” In September, my country singer-feisty reporter erotic romance, Unanswered Prayers, will be released by Turquoise Morning Press. I belong to several romance writers groups, with an online membership of several hundred voracious readers, authors, reviewers and bloggers, many of whom encouraged me to write. My blog is read regularly by many of these readers and also the growing audience of listeners who have heard me read my mainstream essays on NPR’s “51%”, a nationally broadcast show directed at women, and also on “Roundtable”, a popular program heard on WAMC, Northeast Public Radio.
I have just turned 62. I live near Saratoga Springs, NY with my chocolate Labrador Retriever. We enjoy occasional visits from my daughter who is a clinical psychologist and my son who is works in internet college sports reporting in Seattle. I paint watercolors, swim as often as I can and still practice law in between writing romance and memoir.
Her latest book is Cocktales: An After-50 Dating Memoir.
I'm from Ohio and I make no bones about it. Born and raised there...They even had Glee in a small Ohio town! Now Inkspell has another small high school... where things aren't as they seem!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clouded by MS Kaye

A Sumerian water and sky god myth collides with a modern high school.

Ayanna is a math nerd, logical and rational, even cold, but Calder makes her feel things she never had before. Somehow, she’s able to accept it when she discovers he’s a reincarnated Sumerian water god. Will she be able to accept the full truth, that the story of Enki and Inanna has been reborn in a modern Ohio high school?

EXCERPT:
Calder’s voice was quiet but threatening. “Can you not see she’s uncomfortable?”

Mark opened his mouth, as if about to argue.

Calder added in a growl, “Back the fuck off.”

The silence was cold.

Then a clang bellowed from the kitchen. Several of the girls gasped and jumped.

Calder shoved him the last couple inches into the wall, then walked out.

Everyone stared after him. They let him go, didn’t try to egg on a fight. I had the impression they knew better, like they were scared to anger Calder any more than he already was.

The atmosphere lightened slowly. Several voices recommenced.

“I don’t know. It must’ve boiled over,” one of the cafeteria workers said.

“Someone’s PMSing,” Mark snickered. He looked shaken, embarrassed.

“Wow,” one of the girls said.

“Yeah, Cal’s always been sweet like that. You should’ve seen when we were in the first grade and someone was picking on me. It was so sweet…” She went on and on. I had to ignore her.

The line dragged, and when I could finally see into the kitchen, I saw why. The huge pot looked like it’d spewed scalding water, and several of the women who’d been serving were attempting to dry surfaces all over the kitchen. How in the world had it boiled over like that? It looked more like it’d exploded. The water was everywhere, not just the stove and the floor, but the ceiling, the prep table, and even all the way to the serving line. What in the world is it with this town and water? The school sprinklers went off for no reason on my first day, the snow and rain behaved oddly, and now this.

Monica Beggs is more than the hottest porn star out on DVD--she's Finn Daniel's next assignment.

Lights. Camera. Lube?

Famous porn star Monica Beggs has wrapped up another grueling on-location movie shoot when the Colombian cartel attempts to kidnap her. Their guns are as real as the price on her pretty head.

Former Special Ops and present day surfer, Finn Daniels recognizes a lady in distress when he sees one—especially when it’s his adult film crush being hustled out the door. He’s no longer in the business of busting up the underworld, but that doesn’t deflect his moral compass.

In a fast-paced adventure--over land, sea, and air--playing it hot and heavy can only lead them straight into action!

Excerpt

He hooked one arm behind her back and another under her knees, then lifted. Placing her on the leather seat, they were nearly the same level as he stared into the depth of her clear eyes. Pressure bloomed below his belt and short-circuited his brain.

“Thank you, again.” Monica tilted her head and smiled. Her breath caressed his cheek in warm puffs and he wondered how her kiss would feel…how she would taste. Wondered what moves she owned and might use on him.

His shoulders crowded the door space as he leaned in the car. She released a tiny sigh. Their mouths were inches apart. His fingers itched to discover the texture of her hair and test the softness of her skin. The heat in her eyes matched the fire in his blood, beckoning to him before lowering to settle on his lips.

Did she want him to kiss her? Finn parted his lips in anticipation.

He’d never found danger to be a turn-on but apparently he’d found a brand-new world with Monica Beggs.

She must decide if she can commit her life to someone who takes unnecessary risks with his. Will she take control of her own destiny, even if it means leaving Michael behind? Or will she risk everything for love?

EXCERPT:
Jennifer left Richard’s office squealing inside. Back in her office, she reached for her calendar, and her next thought nearly sent her to her knees. Tomorrow was September fifth.

She put a hand to her chest as the breath escaped her. Tomorrow was supposed to be her wedding day. She was supposed to be married to Michael Reynolds. How many times had she imagined that day – imagined walking down the aisle to meet him? Visions of yellow roses and bright summer flowers ran through her mind. It would’ve been spectacular. She wondered if he’d remember the date. Her mother would, for sure. Jennifer rubbed her temples. Oh, God, please don’t let her call.

“Hey, Jennifer, do you want to walk down to JJ’s or drive?” Courtney asked, appearing at Jennifer’s office.

Jennifer’s stomach twisted. JJ’s? Happy hour?

Courtney moved closer. “What’s the matter?”

Jennifer’s lips trembled, and tears stung her eyes. She shook her head, unable to speak.

Courtney knelt beside her. “Hey,” she said softly. “What’s going on?”

“I can’t go to JJ’s,” Jennifer whispered.

“Okay,” Courtney said, a soothing tone lacing her words. “You don’t have to. But you look like you need to get out of here. Do you want to do something else?”

Jennifer met her friend’s eyes, and almost choked. “I was supposed to go to my rehearsal dinner tonight.”

Courtney’s expression immediately switched from confusion to sympathy, and she drew Jennifer into a hug. “Oh, no. Oh, Jenny, I’m so sorry.”

A few moments later, Courtney sat back on her heels. “Listen, you shouldn’t be by yourself. Let’s grab carryout somewhere and watch a movie. Or get drunk. It’s close enough to five. We can scoot out early. If anyone asks, we’ll say you don’t feel well and I’m following you home. Not a big deal.” She took hold of Jennifer’s arm. “Let’s get you out of here.”

Yes, she should get out before she broke down and embarrassed herself. Tears she reserved for the shower where they could wash down the drain where they belonged. But eating and drinking? The thought of food turned her stomach, and drinking too much would make her sick, so that wasn’t an option. The fact was, there was nothing she could do. Nothing could take away this hurt. She’d just have to get through it. Somehow.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Darlene Deluca writes women’s fiction and contemporary romance, and likes to explore relationships – what brings people together or keeps them apart. Her characters have a real-life quality and are well-rounded women (with some classy heroes sprinkled in) who juggle careers and personal life, and find fulfillment whether it’s through romance or solid I’ve-got-your-back girlfriends.

Deluca released her debut novel, “Unexpected Legacy,” in January, 2013. “Her Greatest Risk” is her sixth full-length novel.

 Deluca has been a reader and writer since childhood. With a degree in Journalism, she started her writing career as a newspaper reporter, and later moved into corporate communications. She tolerates living in the Midwest (that’s where the fam is), but when the temperature plummets and the ground turns white, she often longs for a distant sunny beach.
