Adding parents or children to a story can only add to the story's depth. By giving the characters people to play off of, we see them in a different light.
In Suze Robinson's latest release, WORTH SOMETHING MORE, the author uses the relationship between the hero and his daughter to give a different look at the hero. Now this brooding guy has more on his mind that his company or work, but also his family.
Here's a great excerpt to show just how much his daughter means to him...
“Dad, I get it. It’s a crazy time with the game releasing. I could always move my appointment around and see about staying with a friend during your meetings. It’s not a big deal.”
I slide across the couch and hug her. I never want my daughter to think she’s less important, or that I ever put my work before her. It wasn’t the case, not anymore.
I almost lost her once, and it tore us apart. It broke my family into pieces, and I’ll fight to keep the shattered remains together. Lily is everything to me and nothing comes before her.
“I love you. Please don’t think I’m upset that I get more time with you. You aren’t moving or changing anything, got it?”
“Got it. I love you too.”
We spend the next couple of hours together watching a movie and laughing. Lily’s always able to bring some of that lightness back into my life. We talk about everything and nothing around a bowl full of popcorn and the sounds of lightsabers in the background. It’s the perfect way to spend my evening.
“So, how’s school going? Your mom mentioned we have a couple of projects to work on?” I ask, then toss some popcorn in my mouth. She leans forward to grab a drink of water then rolls her eyes. “School’s okay. The projects she’s mentioned can wait. How’s the game trailer coming along? You still have a meeting in the morning to bring the new team up-to-date with the launch, right?”
“Don’t change the subject. You know how important school is, so why do you say your homework can wait?”
“It’s not a big deal, just an easy science report, and it’s finished, mostly. You know how Mom gets. Which will probably only get worse when I start high school next year. Anyway, the game?” She presses forward, so I let the worries of homework go. She’s right, her mother pushes those things when it’s not necessary. I trust Lily to be responsible.
Kate has three focuses— video games, red wine, and following her dreams. None of those will require her to fall in love, settle down or have kids like her mother wishes and she's quite content with her non-existent dating life.
That’s until Lincoln shows up and literally knocks her on her butt during their first encounter. Subsequent meetings are less than stellar as the gorgeous and broody marketing director comes out of hiding. With a shared love for gaming, Lincoln and Kate form a quick friendship despite their age gap and working relationship.
Fate decides to take a dark twist, testing Kate in ways she couldn't imagine. With a tragic turn of events, Kate's life will take her on a new path, one that might not cross with Lincoln's anymore.
What happens when fate makes you decide between your heart and your dreams?

Each new release is a huge accomplishment. Authors agonize over each word and nervously pick at their story and hope that someone will pick up their book and love it as much as they do.
Today is an amazing day for Distant Heart Sounds. Kate MacInnis' new release is an exciting romp through a romance with ghosts butting in along the way. I loved this book when I read it! So cute! Sometimes the secondary characters steal the day!!
But don't take my word for it, check this out for yourself!
Just because you haven’t seen a ghost, it doesn’t mean they aren’t around. You can’t see germs either, but you know they exist everywhere. Besides, everybody has a ghost story or unexplained experience—yet no one wants to admit that they believe in spirits.
What if your life was turned upside down and you suddenly had the ability to see, hear and communicate with those on the other side? How would you handle the situation?
Distant Heart Sounds takes a look at what Morgan Cutler encounters after an unexpected near-death-experience leaves her with psychic abilities. As a 40-ish, skeptical, heard-it-all-before, metro Detroit emergency center nurse, Morgan believes she has seen just about everything in her 20+ years on the job, but then one day, she feels someone she cannot see.
The new Morgan opens herself to a relationship with a hunky doctor at the emergency center, who has some psychic ability as well. Romance, humor, mystery, and being connected to others bring peace and joy into her life.
But what happens when Morgan witnesses the evil inside one man’s heart? Some secrets are better left unseen.
Morgan crossed the room and grabbed the baseball bat from her bedroom closet and placed it on her shoulder in a “batter up” gesture. She stepped into the dark hall outside the bedroom where a glow from the first floor of the house gave off enough light to flood the stairs. She frowned at the intense smell of freshly baked bread and rich food that made her mouth water since she could neither cook nor bake. At the top of the staircase, she crouched with her back against the wall and planted one bare foot on the first step as she leaned closer to the banister.
With the bat now cradled on her lap, she peered downstairs. In the foyer below, she counted more than thirty people gathered in the entry, library, and living room of her small home. She was sure she didn’t even know that many people. The lights blazed as the revelers laughed, ate hors d’oeuvres from silver platters, smoked cigarettes, stood around the shiny black piano as they sang Cole Porter tunes, and clinked champagne glasses filled to the brim. Several people made toasts for good luck and great health. One gentleman spilled the bubbly liquid with a flourish onto the shiny marble floor as he tried to hit the target of another gentleman who lay there with his mouth wide open. A few couples snuggled into corners while others danced, shimmied, and vied for attention. Everyone was dressed in black and white silks and satins with dazzling jewels and long strings of pearls.
“I don’t own a piano,” Morgan said out loud. “And my house doesn’t have marble floors.”
