A Starr falls, and a family is found.
On the run from the Organization, Starr and Christian find safety on the Qualla Boundary with their friends, Ben and Coda, but Starr needs answers. She owes her dear dead friends, Sami and Jody, that much. She forms a team of her own to fight the general and his recruits.
Di, a mutual friend and anti-everything is a no-brainer, plus her Taser will come in handy. Frank, Starrâs BFF, will put his life on the line for her. Ben and Coda, not to be outdone by Starrâs friends, also swear their allegiance. Christianâs the only hold out. He knows what the Organization is capable of. He has the beaten body to prove it, but when Starr wants something, she gets it.
Now that the teamâs together, everything should be perfect. Trouble is Starr loves Christian but so does Di. And Frank, well, heâs never been very good at hiding his love for Starr. Will his four-year long crush on her threaten the safety of the team?
Life becomes tense on the Qualla Boundary, sparks fly, and the Organization is about to smash in their door.

1. Starr
He leans in to kiss me. I tilt my head up. Our lips are about to meet when images flash before my eyesâwhite hair, haunting blue eyes, made for pictures smileâ¦. My eyes open wide. âOh my god, Christian, I just remembered someone from my grandparentsâ house.â
He pulls his face away from me, his eyes wide. âWho?â
âGimme a second.â I turn the computer back on. I pace back and forth around the room as it boots upâthe WiFi is way too slow for my patience level. âI donât know his name. I remember his faceâhis face was plastered all over my grandparentsâ wall. He held gold shovels and cut ribbons with my grandparents.â
The Yahoo home screen comes to life. I click the headline section below the newsreel until I get to the one I want. âThat guy!â I point at the screen. âThatâs the guy!â I click on the picture so it takes up the whole screen. âJerry White, the pastor of the Jonathon Drive Church. I didnât remember him until I saw the picture.â I study the screen up close. âWho is the other guy next to him?â I say more to myself than Christian. My eyes skim the headline for the other manâs name.
Before I can read it aloud, Christian says, âThatâs Samuel Langhorne, the new governor of North Carolina.â
Iâd be an idiot if I missed the bitterness in his voice. âChristian, whatâs wrong?â
âHe won the election last fall after his Democratic opponent was killed in a car accident.â Tears streak the sides of his face.
âYour dad.â
âMy dad.â

I know everyone at school thoughtâscratch thatâassumed I had my shit together. Class President, captain of the cross-country, track, and swim teams, Miss âVoted Mostly Likely to Run a Fortune 500 Company,â but it was a lie. It was all a lie. Beneath the confident, outgoing Starr Bishop was little Jessica Chamberlain, a girl scared shitless. A girl so insecure in her day-to-day interaction with her peers that she decided to become the boss of them instead. A girl afraid to open her heart to boys because the prospect of getting said heart broken seemed too painful. The boy beside me changed me though. The moment he took my hand at the club all those days ago, he changed me.
He shudders when he inhales. A reminder of his bruised ribs. A tear streaks down my cheek. His lips, slightly parted as he exhales, spoke magic to me at the falls yesterday when he declared his love for me. As sure in his love, as he is about everything. I felt it tooâthat love he spoke of. I feel it now. I think Iâll feel it always.
I never gave love much thought before yesterday, never allowed myself the opportunity to love someone other than my parents. The less interaction I had with boys, the better Sami, Jody, and I got along. Another tear streams down my cheek. I long to blanket myself in his undivided attention, to escape the feelings of sadness that linger whenever I think of Sami and Jody.
I trace his lips, no longer caring if I wake him. In fact, hoping I do.
3. Di: Her First Chapter
The morning drags on period after brutal period. Contemporary Issues used to be my favorite classâthat is until Starr and Christian disappeared. Now New Lifer Tammy dominates every discussion, including weather updates with her conservative agenda. Iâve taken to sharpening my fingernails into points. And donât even get me started about Chemistry with Morris. That should be self-explanatory. Of course, English Litâs all right. I miss Starr, but One Flew Over the Cuckooâs Nest sorta reads like my personal memoir.
When the bell finally releases us, we scamper like Pavlovâs dogs to the cafeteria. A few underclassmen fall victim to a well-placed shove as I barrel down the stairs, but no one dares complain. No one wants an up-your-junk meeting with my Docs.
My first problem arises when Mr. Hollywood isnât at the designated meeting place. Most likely, heâs caught up with Little Red in a well-lit corner trying to pull an R-rating to her PG-13, but if he doesnât show soon, Iâll smash my bag across his head and drag him out into the street.
I take my time selecting a lunch tray. My choices? Insane asylum pink or puke green. Hmmm, letâs select the most disgusting shades on the color wheel to make the cafeteria food appear more appetizing. I grab insane asylum pink, realize Mr. Hollywoodâs still a no-show, turn back to the rack, and exchange it for puke green. If I donât enter the food line soon, a Spork wielding wannabe rent-a-cop will start harassing me. Then my next problem becomes everyoneâs problem and Iâll probably make a scene and get kicked out of schoolâwhich could work to my advantageâ¦I might have to consider that as Plan B. For now, Iâll stick to Plan A.
About the Author
Kim once smashed into a tree while skiing. The accident led to a concussion, a cracked sternum, temporary notoriety as a sixth grader returned from the dead, and the realization that fictionalized accounts are way more interesting than just slipping on the ice.
An unhealthy obsession with conspiracy theories combined with a love of travel and happily ever afters led Kim to write her YA novel, Starr Fall, where a secret organization decides Starr Bishop would make the ideal assassin. While in hiding, Starr meets dark, moody, and dead sexy Christian Evergood. Cue the swoon worthy music. But itâs not all happily ever afters for Kim, her NA novel, And Then He, explores the dark and scary corners of the human psyche. Following a night of innocent flirting with a handsome stranger, Tiffani finds herself in the midst of a nightmare she canât escape. And Then He is available now through Amazon and other major book retailers. Starr Fall released November 2016 with Inkspell Publishing. Starr Lost, Book Two of the Starr Fall Series, releases January 4, 2017. Starr Gone, Book Three of the Starr Fall Series, will release June 2017.
When sheâs not doing something writerly, Kim can be found jumping into snow drifts with her three kids, husband, and dog. Sheâs careful to avoid trees.
