Sneak Peek Sunday showcases six paragraphs of your work...no more and no less. Here's six from my upcoming release The Heartsong Cowboy. Taylor is visiting the horses of Heartsong Ranch for the first time. She's not spoken since a trauma which silenced her voice. Equine therapy was her mother's last ditch effort to save her daughter.
Slowly, she reached out and clasped his fingers. He shut the gate behind them and walked into the corral. Four horses looked up but continued to nibble on the hay. Jake walked her over to each animal. They stopped at the first one, a pretty palomino. “This is Cherokee. She likes to stomp her feet when she’s hungry.”
The girl reached out to touch the animal, but pulled her fingers back before making contact.
“It’s okay. Just gently rub her nose.” He showed her how to do it. Cherokee continued to eat. “We have three more to meet.” He led her to a sleek black mare. “This is Crimson. She’s a sweetheart.”
This time she reached out to pet the mare on her own. However, Crimson appeared more interested in him. She used her nose to push at him.
“Play nice, Crimson.” He laughed. “Let’s go see the other two.”
Jake and Taylor approached them. “The spotted one is Cougar, and the brown one is Cheyenne.” Even before the child could take a step, Cheyenne came over and stuck her nose down toward Taylor and blew a whinny in her face.
