Constance Bridgewater, the daughter of the late Earl of Bridgewater, might be the perfect lady, but her feelings for the Earl of Chester are anything but ladylike. They both know that if they were together, everything would be just perfect. So what is keeping them apart? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Excerpt: “You can’t deny the party last night was delightful, Constance.” Constance read the extreme interest in her cousin Sarah’s countenance. Her eyes were almost wild. “I believe I told you it was so,” Constance said. “And what of the gentlemen there?” Sarah persisted. “Do you deny that you enjoyed dancing with them?” Constance took a measured breath, keeping her pique from her own features. “Why ever would I deny that? I enjoyed myself immensely and fancied each gentleman who took my hand in his. There, are you satisfied?” Sarah blew out a breath and leaned back. “You’re always satisfied.” Diane Plymouth, their close friend, let out a sigh. “I’m not.” Constance studied Diane, certain she had heard her incorrectly. “What do you mean, Diane?” She waved a hand. “I’m unable to settle on a gentleman, I’m afraid. I want to marry and settle down, like our other friends have.” Constance quelled her feelings. She so wanted that as well, but it wouldn’t do to appear as desperate as these two. It wasn’t in keeping with her image of the cool and perfect young society miss. This morning she was immensely chafed by that mantel. “It’s a pity so many eligible men have been snatched from the marriage market.” Sarah sighed, then suddenly brightened. “There are still several left for the taking, Diane. Don’t give up hope.” “True, but I don’t know where to set my cap,” Diane said. “I have a few men in mind, but I just can’t decide.” Constance didn’t want to ask, she truly didn’t. Burning interest in the social swirl of the season was expected, however. “Which gentlemen are you considering?” she asked Diane. “Well, there are several,” Diane said, her eyes bright as she warmed to her topic. “Take Lord Kanewood’s circle.” Sarah snorted. “Two down, two to go.” Diane nodded. “I chose that particular group of gentlemen to demonstrate my sad state.” “Really?” Constance said, curious despite herself. “Why those particular men?” Sarah nodded, leaning forward. “They are such diverse gentlemen, in looks and temperament.” “Exactly,” Diane said. “Take Lord Kanewood.” “Yes, please,” Sarah put in. Constance laughed. “He’s married, Sarah. And quite happily.” Sarah grinned and nodded. “Yes, yes. Go on, Diane.” “He’s the leader of their circle, commanding and very handsome. Yet he was caught.” “And gone from the market.” Sarah sighed. “Now, take Lord Leed,” Diane went on. “Yes, please,” Sarah said again. “Sarah,” Constance said with another laugh. “Lord Leed,” Diane went on, her face dreamy now. “Dark and brooding and so . . .” She sighed. “Yes,” Constance said. “Another gentleman happily married.” “Oh, but Lord Roberts!” Diane gushed now. “He’s still available. And so charming and attentive toward me.” “As he is toward most every lady.” Sarah pouted. “A girl can’t count on his charm to land on her alone.” “But I’ve seen his sparkling gray eyes in my dreams,” Diane said. Constance silently allowed that there wasn’t a more charming man of their acquaintance than Lord Roberts, not that she’d seen his particular eyes in her dreams. No. It was one particular pair of warm, brown eyes that made her body ache, in and out of her dreams. Not to mention his thick, blond hair. It looked so soft . . . she shook herself back to her boring, wakeful existence. “Lord Roberts has gone to the country, Diane,” she said. “And will no doubt remain there for some time.” “Yes, his father has reportedly taken ill,” Sarah said. “Pity that, though it might lead to an elevation in his station from viscount to earl.” “Sarah!” Constance said. “How can you wish such sadness on Lord Roberts?” “Oh, I don’t, not really,” Sarah said. “I just wish he was in town this season. He’s one of the few unattached gentlemen who draws my attention.” “Your attention is drawn to every handsome face with a title and fortune,” Diane said. “I daresay I would take Lord Roberts with neither.” Sarah snorted in obvious disbelief. “Be that as it may, he’s well and gone from London and we’ll have to set our caps for different gentlemen if we have any hope of marrying before this new season ends.” The two other girls grew quiet, which unsettled Constance more than their chatter had. It was inevitable, the new course their conversation would take. She braced herself for the realization to strike the two of them. “There is at least one who is available and quite attractive,” Diane said. Constance’s hands fluttered in her lap and she fought to keep them still. “Which gentleman?” she asked, as if she didn’t know. “Hmm, yes,” Sarah mused aloud. “There is always Lord Chester.” And there it was. The mention of the very man Constance couldn’t get out of her mind. “L-Lord Chester?” “Oh, yes, Lord Chester!” Diane cried. “He’s quite handsome and most pleasant. Though I can’t quite sketch a true picture of his character.” Constance knew what she meant, for he was always so perfect in every social situation. Saying the right thing, dressed the right way, acting in the right manner. Aside from those blessed moments he’d held her in his arms at Leed Manor, that is. “He has done work for Lord Kanewood. That is certain,” Sarah said. “During that business with the earl’s brother, at least.” Diane shivered. “Horrid, that. Stealing funds and attempted murder?” Sarah nodded, her eyes bright. “It’s rumored that Lord Chester has worked with the government, but no one can say in what capacity. He’s well-respected and his opinions count in Parliament. He’s affable and most pleasant, I’ll allow. Well-connected and wealthy, and welcome wherever he goes.” “A perfect gentleman,” Diane concluded. Constance could practically see the interest sparking in the girl’s mind. She wouldn’t let it smolder into flames of desire, however. Lord Chester wasn’t for Diane, or even Sarah for that matter. He was for her. She alone had seen the dark glint of intent in those deep brown eyes of his as he stole glances at her from across the ballroom. She alone had encountered the tenseness of his firmly muscled body as he held her sedately during the dance. She alone had felt the impact of his intriguing smile, curved with heat instead of politeness as he’d nearly kissed her. Yes, she knew there was far more to the Earl of Chester than the well-connected perfect gentleman. Far more. And she would die before she let another lady steal him from her. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ![]() AUTHOR Bio and Links: JoMarie DeGioia has been making up stories for as long as she can remember, and has spent years giving voice to the characters in her head. Laura is the one hope for a world gone Hollywood crazy. In only a matter of hours Laura Swift has been bitten by a zombie, rescued by Mr. Tall, Dark, and Foreboding, and thrown into a world gone Hollywood crazy. She has no choice but to follow Damian into his underworld of manipulated viruses and genetically altered super soldiers. Even as her life hangs in the balance, she can't deny the attraction she feels for the incredibly sexy and thoroughly imposing Infantryman. Damian Gonsalves believes he has a cure for the virus changing innocent people into bloodthirsty undead. Within Laura is the key to stopping the horrific plague. All he has to do is keep her alive and safe, and stay one step ahead of those pursuing them. Her stubbornness frustrates him to no end, while her body drives him to distraction. When they discover the secret behind Project Terminal, will they survive long enough to help stop the unleashed horror? Or will they just be two more victims of a virus threatening all of humanity? Content Warning: graphic sex, strong language, and violence %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Excerpt: "Four more hours. We have to prepare." Laura went cold. "Prepare?" "The progression will snowball from here." His voice dead, he continued to stare at some unseen view. He'd kissed her with such passion, now he spoke without emotion. How could someone do such a turnabout? The lousy bastard. Rage, white hot in intensity, shot through her, her head swimming with it. "Maybe you're just stupid, Damian. Stupid for allowing a zombie thing to attack me. I wouldn't be dying if it wasn't for you. You deserve this, not me." Her fists balled at the injustice of it all. "You should die for this." She sucked in wheezing breaths, unable to fill her lungs, and fell back on her butt. Her eyes widened, searching a darkened corner of the room, a distorted face appearing from the shadows. It grinned with broken, yellowed teeth, its eyes glowing in the dimness. She gagged over raw terror. "Oh my God, I saw something over there." She scrambled backward. "Damian, one of those things is in here." * * * * Damian glanced around the sparsely furnished room. Other than a few flies and mosquitoes buzzing around them they were alone. He closed his eyes, the weight of guilt pressing down making it difficult to speak. "We're alone, Laura. Nobody else is in here." The night wore on, and fits of anger mingled with her confusion. Several times he'd had to prevent her from dashing out the door. He paced the confines of the living room, waiting for the last of the madness to run its course. Laura lay on the floor, lashing out toward some unseen attacker, before her breathing became rapid, labored pants. White foam bubbled from her mouth. He pinched the bridge of his nose, turning away. He'd become disillusioned with the system he'd given his life to shortly after discovering they'd screwed up royally in creating the virus. In a lab he'd watched a man succumb to it, changing into a soulless corpse. It'd been horrific the first time he'd witnessed it. Afterward Headquarters had assigned him to track down an infected woman outside of the facility. It was his duty as a super soldier to clean up their mistakes. Now he wanted nothing more than to see the lab destroyed, something he should've done in the first place. He should've listened to Doug and Max, two of the doctors from the early days of the project. Their warnings had come to pass, but he'd been a stubborn, misinformed jackass. Curled in the fetal position, Laura looked like a sick child, fragile and broken. His throat constricted, even though it was ridiculous to have feelings for someone you didn't know. He was military, Army Infantry, for Christ's sake, he knew how to pull a trigger without regret. Laura rolled onto her back, staring toward the ceiling with glassy eyes. Despite the tremulous hold she had on life, she was already dead. He existed as a government killing machine—an automaton they'd designed. Nothing more. He'd given his humanity away to the project. He wasn't much better than the corpses he hunted. "I'm so sorry this happened to you, baby. You were right, I deserved this, not you." His vision blurred when he stared down the barrel, the silencer aimed squarely between her eyes, his heart beating a crazed rhythm in his chest. His finger squeezed ever so slightly on the trigger. Outside a mourning dove called to its mate, a haunting song echoing in the room. He recalled a story from his youth about how a dove would arrive to carry a person's soul to the afterlife. If he believed in anything but the here and now, in that moment he would've thought it true. Laura's mouth gaped open, strangled noises escaping her throat, seizures taking her into death throes. He lowered his arm and thumped the butt of his gun against his thigh, waiting for the monster to appear. When she became the undead, when she moved to attack him, he'd have the power to destroy her. She deserved one last try to get the best of him. Maybe it wasn't Laura anymore, but he'd honor the fighting spirit within her. She'd never get past him, but if she took a piece of him in the process he'd have an excuse to end the whole goddamned thing here, in this stinking house. If he ever got infected his duty would be to put a bullet in his own head. Laura's body stilled, her eyelids drifting closed. Any moment… Her eyes popped wide open, her back arching. She sucked in a breath as if surfacing from deep waters. He turned his body sideways, leveling his gun in dead aim, waiting for the corpse to lunge. "Damian?" One time I went to lunch with a girlfriend over spring break and ended up getting my belly button pierced! Yep, I'd already had two children and was now celebrating being me. My hair color changes with the seasons and last year, I went and got a tattoo of puppy footprints on my right foot, to keep my fur baby in my heart. A few months ago, I stepped or strutted outside my comfort zone. I had boudoir photography done. While I did want to have some sexy photos for my husband. I wanted them for me. At my age, I felt that I needed some validation about my body. I've faced a breast cancer scare and have the scar to prove it. I've had two children and have the stretch marks to show for them--or tiger stripes as they're now called. Frankly, I'm passed the middle age marker and didn't want to wait until I lost ten pounds or whatever excuse. As luck would have it, a friend had her photos done last year. They were beautiful and tasteful. She gave me the name of the photographer who did hers and the woman was planning a shoot for the following week. I paid for it and then there was no going back. The shoot was held at a local hotel. Professional hair and make-up was included as well as about 10 finished photos. I'd gone shopping and bought some sexy things but I wasn't sure what would look good on me. My nerves were popping as I rode the elevator up to the floor. I couldn't believe that I was doing it. The make-up artist was really nice. She'd recently worked on the the local production of the major film, OZ and talked me through what she was doing. The hair dresser was equally nice. She said that she wanted me to have bedroom hair, slightly tousled. When it was time for the photos, I put on one outfit that I thought looked the best. You could tell I was nervous and uncomfortable. The photos felt stiff. As I relaxed about being in my underwear in front of the people, I thought the photos got better. All in all, I was very pleased about how the photos turned out. What do you think? I'm dying to have more done. Now that I'm comfortable with the idea and got to see the finished product, I want to have a larger variety of poses. If you are looking for someone in Michigan to have boudoir photographs done, I highly recommend Jennifer Tschirret Urbin. She makes you feel so comfortable and well, just look at these photos! http://www.jurbinphotography.blogspot.com/ ![]() Mutual Release By Liz Crowe Evan’s family was dysfunctional which left him with scars but it was Damian who left the deepest scars on Evan’s psyche. Julie’s youth was also fraught with pain and suffering. Her relationships with men caused her to hide a part of herself from everyone. When Evan and Julie come together, more than sparks fly…healing can begin. I love Ms. Crowe’s ability to create flawed and human characters who have issues and guilt. Evan and Julie aren’t perfect. They each have a history that shapes their relationship and causes many problems between them, but they honestly love each other and want to work things out. I found myself cheering for them to get their acts together and figure out what they both wanted and needed. Evan struggles more with handling his baggage yet is the first to push Julie to let go of hers. Maybe it was his need to protect, but other than his high-handedness, he seems like such a wonderful guy and one any lady would be lucky to have in her life. Julie seems to complete him. While this book is a stand alone, it does fit nicely with the rest of The Stewart Realty stories. We get glimpses into the other books and characters who are dear to our hearts. And the ending leaves me dying to read the final book…it hints at something big. I can’t wait for this final story to be told as I know that Ms. Crowe will tug at my heartstrings and drag me kicking and screaming into the ending, only to have me wish for more. **This review is my own feelings. But because she has a three month dating rule, she’s never given them her virginity. But her best friend, Derrick has other plans. He has feelings for Mia and will do anything to get her to realize that he’s the only one for her. Mia is a beautiful woman who doesn’t see her own beauty. She’s been hurt by the last guy she dated who said she wasn’t good enough. She views her body as the enemy, not as desireable. This is so real. I can’t tell you how many times I complain about my own body. I don’t see myself as sexy and I know many women like me. Derrick isn’t the smoothest talker when it comes to Mia. He doesn’t share his feelings because he’s afraid he’ll push her away. This leads to some of the misunderstandings between them, but it also helps Mia see what he’s really like. Each of the characters are real people with flaws and insecurities. I loved how Ms. White was able to portray people that I could relate to. The sensual build up in this story is amazing. As Derrick sets out to win Mia’s heart, the heat gets higher and higher. I don’t know how she stood it. I’d have thrown myself at him long before that! But the actual event was worth the wait. The secondary characters of Jeff and Allison were fun too and provide different comparisons for Mia and Derrick. They are a fearsome foursome and one I’d love to be a part of. Too bad I can’t just jump into this book! **This review is my own thoughts on a book I purchased at Amazon. Janel was a high school nerd and faced a great deal of torment at the hands of the popular crowd. I could identify with Janel’s high school life. I wasn’t picked on like she was but there were clearly different cliques in my high school. Ms. Taylor’s description of the local hang out with the different levels of acceptance was hearbreakingly true. Janel returns to town for her twenty year high school reuion but with an agenda. He seeks out her first love Jake. Jake was one of the popular crowd and one of Janel’s tormentors. Yet he felt bad about it. When Janel comes back, he is enticed by this new person. He doesn’t recognize her after all the years. The action between Janel and Jake was sizzling and also heartbreaking. Janel has a history that leaves her strong yet vulnerable. She never wants to be second place in anyone’s heart. I feel the same way. Moren is a secondary character but one that I want to know more about. He is a perfect second in command to Janel but his history and backstory deserve their own story. I can’t wait to hear more about him. A First Love Never Dies is a gripping tale of two people who fight their past as they bridge a new future. Janel and Jake will touch your heart and Ms. Taylor’s world building will leave you sailing among the stars. I felt like I was there within the story. I highly recommend A First Love Never Dies for everyone who enjoys a story full of conflict, passion and a unique world. Have they really seen my photography skills? But if I do, I'll be sure to share them with you! I'm anxious to see the people I was close with...like my date to the junior prom. We went and had a blast. I always thought KAZ would have gone on to win a Grammy! He was very musically inclined. I'm also happy to see good friends like Jamie, Scott and Rob. They've promised not to tease me too much. :) I always thought Rob and Scott would have gone out west and had their own big ranch spreads! They worked ranches each summer and were some of the only "real" cowboys I knew! Well, I'm going back to 1983 on Saturday...While I can't believe it's been thirty years, it will be nice to go home-to Amherst- again. No wonder I write about it all the time. It's in my blood! Today I'm excited to share with you a hot new book by Aimee Duffy. Sinfully Summer is sure to be sizzling! Aimee is here to share her thoughts on the hero of her book, Ric. Take it away Aimee! ~~~~~~~ Five things I love about Enrique Castillo Enrique (or Ric for short) is one of my favourite heroes (but shhh, don’t tell Miles, Sander or Jake). And here’s why… One. He has a dark past and I have a soft spot for broken heroes. Two. Despite his adrenaline junkie phase, he’s grown up fast and is now trying to prove himself to his adoptive parents to make up for who he was before. Okay, he’s a little dull because he’s all about respect, but Alexa gets him to loosen up pretty quickly. Three. He has muscles, and a tattoo on his chest. Lush, isn’t he? Four. My boy has integrity by the bucket load. He may be alpha, and expects people to do as he asks, but he has strong morals and is kind to the core. He’s even organising a charity ball to raise money for the homeless children in Spain. Five. He’s ambitious, smart and funny. Want to meet Ric? You can here… ![]() Sinfully Summer Blurb Sun, Sea and Scandal Notorious heiress Alexa Green has certainly been enjoying her most recent girls-holiday in Marbella. Just as we thought, she’s been knocking back the cocktails and showing off her fabulous bikini body on the beach… but rumour has it she’s also been spotted sneaking out of Enrique Castillo’s penthouse in the early hours of this morning – in nothing but her underwear! Our question is, doesn’t this fiercely private billionaire know what he’s letting himself in for? He’s got the millions… and she knows how to spend them! So lie back on your sun lounger and get comfortable, because this summer fling is going to be a sizzler! Amazon US / Amazon UK / Google Play / Barnes & Noble Excerpt Adrenaline roared through her veins. This was her only chance. Pushing away from the wall, she rounded the lift, desperately seeking an escape. She barely noticed the plush furnishings, soft-looking leather sofas and floor to ceiling window which showcased the most spectacular view she’d ever seen. Instead she focused on the walls surrounding the elevator. ‘Are you lost?’ The heavily accented voice froze her to the spot. She darted a glance toward the sound. Dark brows furrowed over the richest coloured eyes she’d seen. His gaze swept over the length of her body, then up, lingering on her rear for a beat too long. Her skin tingled under his scrutiny. Turning her whole body to face him, she slapped a hand on her hip. ‘Had a good enough look?’ His lips quirked in a sexy, lopsided grin. The jitters were back and Alexa swore the temperature in the room shot up ten degrees. Her gaze dropped to his broad shoulders, covered in a thin white t-shirt, then down to a well filled chest. She could see a dark pattern beneath the t-shirt. She longed to find out what kind of tattoo he had. Usually, tats didn’t do it for her. But on that body… ‘I could ask you the same thing.’ She snapped her attention back to his face. He stepped toward her, his jaw set, his eyes dancing with humour and something darker…something that made her blood heat and her mouth water. Alexa raised her arm, palm out. ‘Hold it there, Mr. Any closer and I’ll scream.’ He paused by the sofa. Propping his hip against the cream leather, he folded his arms across his chest, causing the muscles to bulge. The moisture drained from her mouth and flooded in her belly. ‘No one’s here to hear you.’ He cocked a brow. ‘You seem to be forgetting where you are and,’ his gaze dipped down to her breasts causing the nipples to peak against the lacy fabric ‘how underdressed.’ Alexa thought this moment would have topped the blush scale. She planted her other hand on her hip and glared at him, unwilling to show any weakness. ‘I’m just leaving.’ She turned and strode back to the lift, keeping her back straight and trying not to wiggle her hips too much. The predatory sheen in his eyes made her body more jittery than the idea of sprinting around the lower floor in her underwear. She reached out to hit the button, but a large hand circled her wrist before she made it. Alexa squeaked and darted back a step. He was so close, and his chest was right in her face. She could see the dark outline of the tattoo beneath the thin cotton. The outline of a burning sun, she thought, or something that looked like a sun. Her hands itched to lift the material and see for herself. ‘I’m up here.’ She snapped her gaze back up to his smirking face and took another step back. His lips kicked up at the corners and his eyes darkened. She swallowed against the urge to step closer, to feel his hard body pressed against hers. But she realised she was in little more than her bra and knickers in a stranger’s home. Unease skittered down her spine. Alexa squared her shoulders, trying to quash the fear turning her heated blood into cold sludge. ‘I’m leaving now.’ ‘After you explain what you’re doing in my home in your undergarments.’ ‘Undergarments?’ Alexa pressed her lips together to keep a giggle at bay. ‘Seriously?’ About the Author All my life I’ve been dreaming up stories. My mum said when I was little I used to make all the My Little Pony figurines talk to each other, and even fall in love. Later, it was Barbie and Ken. In my teens, I played matchmaker with my friends at school. When I wasn’t creating imaginary scenarios, I had my nose stuck in books, reading across genres and there was one thing I loved more than the escapism—the fact a story can touch me so deeply, like I was experiencing everything along with my characters. I knew from early on this was something I wanted to do for others. Fast forward a few years, and the dream almost got lost in real life, but I still couldn’t shake it completely. Now I write sizzling romance with the hope of making my readers’ hearts race like they are falling in love for the first time. She's getting a lot of raves about the cover and the storyline! See for yourself! ![]() Book Spotlight - Pink Neon by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy Romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, multicultural romance Length: 73K Available beginning July 3 at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com, All Romance Ebooks Pink Neon begins with a woman driving a vintage fire engine red GTO over the hills and curves in the Ozarks, a woman too exotic to be a native with her dark skin and corn-rowed braids. She’s brave, though, and bold as she comes to start over, to begin again in a different place in order to realize her dreams. Cecily, my heroine, revealed herself before I ever began writing but my hero, an FBI agent named Daniel Padilla strolled into my story and made it his tale, too. Blurb: When Cecily Brown roared into the vacation hotspot of Branson, Missouri, she had nothing on her mind but distancing herself from her life in Chicago after a divorce. She planned to make her long standing dreams of owning a boutique called ‘Pink Neon’ come true and forget the decade she spent trapped in a hellish marriage to millionaire jeweler Willard Bradford VI. Once she arrives, though, she finds she’s a minority among the tourists with her corn rowed braids and African-American heritage but Cecily is determined to stay. Her cousin calls to tell her the news – her ex-husband managed to get murdered on the steps of his mansion but Cecily doesn’t care. Her old life is history and she’s eager to move forward with the grand opening of her boutique. Her first customer at Pink Neon is a man, dark and mysterious. She pegs him for a criminal or a cop but their attraction is intense. So is their first date which ends in intimacy and soon, she’s all but inseparable from Daniel Padilla. He carries his own old baggage too. Life’s good until Padilla admits he’s an FBI agent sent to check Cecily out. She reacts with anger but as she learns she’s become the FBI’s favorite suspect, she has to trust Daniel if she can trust anyone at all. As the investigation heats up, she ends up heading south with him to Texas, as she and her FBI lover try to discover who the real killer might be. But danger lurks and it’s going to get rough before they straighten things out….if they can. Excerpt: Beneath his mirrored sunglasses, his eyes burned and below his brimmed cap, Daniel Padilla endured a headache of epic proportion. Although he preferred to blame it on the drive down from Kansas City, he suspected the multiple Tequila shots he tossed down after checking into a cheap ass motel sometime after midnight might be the cause. He intended for the alcohol to help him sleep and it did but since the price turned out to include serious pain, he wished he’d stayed sober. Uneasy waves stirred in his belly but he spooned a little vanilla ice cream into his mouth anyway. It might ease the nausea and at least it’d make his cover look genuine. So far I don’t like Branson and I sure as hell never thought I’d come here again but I’m here. So far it sucks worse than I thought it might. He watched as a woman came outside from the shop next door, a tricked up boutique with a pink neon sign above the door. Daniel studied her face and after squinting, he decided despite the corn row braids, the casual clothes it was Cecily Brown, recent ex-wife of jewelry magnate and millionaire Willard Bradford. She’s a lot prettier this way. His fingers fumbled open the manila file lying on the picnic table where he sat. Daniel studied the photos through his bleary eyes and removed the shades for a better view. The woman in the pictures wore her hair down, sleek as satin and styled. Her conservative garments whispered of both wealth and professional privilege. The muted colors, soft pastels, dowsed her beauty instead of enhancing it. Daniel snorted as he counted the rings on her well-shaped hands and noted with derision the dangling diamond earrings she wore. Rich bitch. Yet he found her attractive in person, graceful and almost beautiful. Nothing about the jeans and simple t-shirt she wore looked pretentious. But he wondered if she’d really killed her former spouse and made off with the jewels. She sure as hell doesn’t look the type but you never know. If he’d learned any lesson in his ten years with the FBI, Daniel discovered anyone could do anything. If he hadn’t been sure, he would’ve doubted this woman could be the same one in the pictures. That woman looked elegant but empty, stilted and confined. The gal he watched sashay across the parking lot radiated heat. Pink highlighted her coloring and enhanced her looks. She paused at a vintage GTO he’d love to own and opened the door. Cecily Brown slid into the passenger seat and Daniel watched her lips tilt into a smile as she turned the key in the ignition. As the motor caught, he heard a burst of music from the CD player, the unmistakable retro sound of The Pointer Sisters. Daniel listened as Cecily sang along, her voice a rich alto, true to the tune as it blended into ‘Fire’, the classic hit. For a moment he forgot his headache and the spoon in his hand dropped into the paper container of ice cream as he stared. Cecily Brown, he thought, was fire. His battle scarred heart lost its rhythm as Daniel watched her pull out onto the strip, her voice ringing out over the traffic sounds enough he caught snatches of the song. Provocative, evocative the lyrics touched a chord within, one he thought broken and unresponsive. Shit, the song’s older than both of us. But it retained power and heat. The music evoked feelings he thought he buried long ago. With pure instinct Daniel tossed his half-eaten ice cream and jumped in his black sedan to follow her.
