Twenty years after the first and the aliens are back for revenge. I give this movie a B+. We beat the aliens on July 4th, 1996 and used their technology to bring peace among the world. Now twenty years later, the aliens want revenge and this time, they are bigger than before. Only a few brave men and women stand in defense as they set out to protect the planet and destroy the ‘mother’ of the hive. (Think Star Trek's Borg) Featuring many nods as well as characters from the original movie, Resurgence tells the story of the next generation…the children of the past heroes, from Will Smith’s son to the former president’s daughter. They are called on to save the planet. We also have the comic relief from Brent Spiner as Dr. Brakish Okun who many thought died in the first movie. From his erratic behavior to unique fashion style, he keeps you laughing. Judd Hirsch and Jeff Goldblum are funny as the father and son Levinsons, who fuss over a lack of grandchildren and end up adopting a group of children. Without these two characters, the movie would haven’t been as good. There’s a lot going on in this movie. Many people have complained about how it felt like everything and the kitchen sink was thrown in. Yet, it keeps up a fast paced action as well as hits the themes of family and love. From the former president putting his life in danger to interrogate the alien prisoners to the fight between his daughter and him over who will give their life in a suicide mission to take down the queen. Just like many science fiction movies, you have to go with the flow and not over analyze things. For example, the Earth’s pilots are able to fly the alien ships without any training. They climb in and are all ready to go. So turn off your brain, just sit back and enjoy the ride!
