Excerpt: “What time is our appointment again?” Rose stumbled over a crack in the sidewalk. “Oh!” Gripping his arm, she steadied herself against him. “You okay?” Rose groaned and lifted her leg, revealing a broken flip-flop and a bloody big toe. “Damnit, that hurts!” Cole winced and guided her to the bench beside them. “Ouch,” he muttered, examining her toe closer. He poked at a piece of the split nail. “Stop!” She cringed. “You’re going to make it bleed more!” The pain on her face hurt his heart, but also brought on a small dose of anxiety.
