“Your brother—"

“Wants to know what this little late-night meeting of the minds is about.” I caught a glimpse of Hawk’s sleepy smile before he kissed the top of my head. Of course he was awake. He didn’t sleep well either, especially if he knew I was up.

When he sat, I answered his query with a white lie. “Della’s pie.”

He didn’t blink with his response, despite obviously seeing there wasn’t any pie or even plates or silverware out. “Worthy.” Hawk raised his chin up toward his brother. “How you doing?”

Jake and I instantaneously caught each other’s eyes. He rolled his as I shook my head. And then we both laughed briefly at my poor husband’s expense.

“What?” Bewildered, Hawk looked from me to his brother.

“If you really want to know how I am …” Jake took a breath, glanced at me for a nod of encouragement, and then, with pure sincerity, spoke his truth. “I … I feel paralyzed. No.” He rubbed the top of his head. “It’s worse. It’s like a part of me has been amputated … without anesthesia.”

Thank God Hawk didn’t hesitate, and he didn’t try to say something soothing or, unknowingly, condescending. His reply back was just as honest. “Shit … yeah.”
