Blurb:
Niki thought being a vessel for Hun-Came, the Mayan death god, was her worst nightmare.
She was wrong.

Bound to Hun-Came, the Mayan god of death, Niki has become something she never wanted to be—a killer.

As bodies pile up and her control slips away, salvation arrives in the form of a cryptic message from Zen, the man who once held her heart. There's a way to sever the supernatural bond, but it requires a perilous journey to Guatemala where ancient magic still pulses through the mystical jungle.

Niki knows all too well the risks. Hun-Came has ruled death for millennia, and he won't release his human vessel without extracting a price that could destroy everything—and everyone—she loves.

Some bloodlines can't be outrun, some hungers can't be denied, and some attractions are dangerous enough to wake the dead.

She sacrificed herself for love—now she must save herself.

Return to the Guatemala’s jungles with author Lisa Dietrich in her exciting sequel to In the Silence of Darkness. This time Niki is battling not only to save the people she loves but her own soul. Some bloodlines can't be outrun, some hungers can't be denied, and some attractions are dangerous enough to wake the dead.

Excerpt
So much blood. I awoke with the scent of blood in my nostrils and the sharp metallic taste of it in my mouth. As the warm liquid slid down my throat, I groaned with pleasure.

The corpse lay at my feet. Judging by the haircut, he was a young marine out for an early morning run. He’d been ambushed, his jugular vein pierced by dagger-like teeth before being dragged into the underbrush by the neck.

Hun-Came’s voice sounded inside my head. “You cannot deny what you are, my little vessel. You hunger for his blood. Your jaguar wahy craves flesh and blood.”

“No!” I shouted angrily. Sobbing, I thrust my hands over the marines wound to try and staunch the blood flow, but it was no use. There would be no saving him.

Hun-Came had co-opted my wahy, releasing me at the precise moment of the kill to demonstrate he was in control of our relationship. He was using my shadow soul to hunt and kill for sport.

“This is what happens when mortals presume to negotiate with gods,” Hun-Came whispered through my mind, his voice like obsidian blades wrapped in velvet. “Your boundaries mean nothing. Your rituals are like children’s games to me. I can collapse the boundaries between the supernatural realm and this one at my choosing.”

I scrambled away from the body, my hands leaving bloody prints on the dry earth. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting long shadows through the trees along the jogging path. This was Hun-Came’s message—delivered in blood and death at dawn after my midnight ritual. A divine temper tantrum.

“He was innocent,” I choked out, bile rising in my throat as I looked at the young man’s face. His eyes were still open, frozen in terror. What had he seen in his final moments? My face? Or the jaguar-form of my wahy with Hun-Came’s death mask superimposed over it?

About the Author-
Lisa Dietrich holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology, which means she's professionally qualified to explain why ancient civilizations are infinitely more interesting than whatever is currently trending on social media. When she's not busy debating the finer points of Pre-Columbian mythology with her extremely patient husband, she writes steamy romance novels.
